I for one am comforted by the recent changes to the FBI mission statement that removes "law enforcement" as their primary goal and replaced it with "national security".

Someone has to do it, since the NSA is too busy weakening the technological infrastructure of the country. When China figures out how to use all their back doors against us, it's the FBI that will have to pick up the pieces.

Yeah, China's licking its chops right now. The beast is hungry and it's working on the keys to the pantry. Of course, they're going to open it up and find almost nothing in there.

I miss the days when self-described leftists would say things like "Dissent is the life's blood of democracy".

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-01-08

Well these policies never really stopped, Homer. Perhaps they had some tangible effect?

Your guys won. Enjoy your utopia.

EvilHomer - 2014-01-08

My guys didn't win. Or rather, they did win, but in the process they became just as awful as the people they replaced.

As you said yourself, these policies (the government's clandestine spying and harassment of political dissidents) never really stopped. What's more, the people who spent the 1960s and 70s stumping in favor of free speech and the right of dissent, turned around and became the people pushing for hate speech laws and campus speech codes during the 80s and 90s. Shades of Camus, yes? Fifty years ago, Marxist Christians like Professor Raines were not allowed to say what they believed without fear of censure from all sides. Today, social conservatives like the Duck Dynasty people are not allowed to say what they believe without facing censure from all sides. Communist and Socialist groups harassed by the FBI, Muslim and Patriot groups (and Communists, and Socialists) harassed by the NSA; what has changed?

In what sense, then, did the anti-authoritarian left actually "win"?

EvilHomer - 2014-01-08

And I'm not enjoying my utopia. That's a big part of why I don't buy into state-reliant progressivism anymore, and why I'm increasingly skeptical of the legitimacy of anti-authoritarian leftist movements, like classical anarcho- or libertarian-socialism.

Well what do you want them to do, Homer? Protest your involvement in the ongoing Wars? Should hippies picket outside your house, or put flowers in your gas tank?

NO WAR, EVIL HOMER!
NO WAR, EVIL HOMER!

NO WAR, EVIL HOMER!
NO WAR, EVIL HOMER!

NO WAR, EVIL HOMER!
NO WAR, EVIL HOMER!

NO WAR, EVIL HOMER!
NO WAR, EVIL HOMER!

Dude, I think I'm having a flashback!
Better you than me, tho.
