I miss the days when commercials depicted video games doing you harm.

MacGyver Style Bomb - 2013-12-16

Not a reaction of excitement, but terror at how awful the Sega CD library was.

snothouse - 2013-12-16

YOU HAVEN'T SEEN 'EM? FUCK YOU CRACKER

Wander - 2013-12-16

I'm pretty sure those are clips from only 4 games.

And I'm pretty sure one of them is Night Trap.

sosage - 2013-12-16

Fun fact: This dude yelling at us is a Bay Area rapper named Chill EB. He use to show up at my high school randomly and even back then, we mainly knew him as the "Sega CD guy". Five for random memory generator.

sasazuka - 2013-12-16

If you look past the bad FMV airquotes "games", the Sega CD had some games worth owning (LUNAR, SNATCHER, SHINING FORCE CD, SONIC CD), even if they were basically just cartridge-like games with CD music and better quality voices. As a Sega CD owner, the main thing I didn't like about it was that the internal memory only allowed, I believe, 3 save games. As in 3 memory slots total no matter how many games you owned on the system. You could get a pseudo-memory card in the form of a Genesis cartridge, but that cost extra. (I'm not sure I ever saw it in stores.)

Quick rant about FMV games on Sega CD: People unfairly give Night Trap and Double Switch crap, lumping them in with the other unimaginative FMV titles (most of these games utilizing FMV were either doing an adventure game, an on rails light gun game or a Dragon's Lair clone).

These two games, though, were pretty damned clever when you consider someone dropped by a game designer's desk and said "Make a game utilizing video footage.". Managing the surveillance and trap system as efficiently, and as quickly, as possible in order to nab as many bad guys as possible is a lot more "game" than most of the other FMV titles. What sucked about these two games is that they were short (other than the cheesy video). You memorized the pattern of the three chapters and you were done.

Sorry. But to reply to Sasazuka, I'm a fan of the system and thought it was cool. I also hated the damned internal memory issues. I loved playing Third World War and one save took up the entire fucking internal memory!?! So much for saving progress on anything else. WTF Sega?!?

EvilHomer - 2013-12-16

Night Trap was crap because it took a great idea and ruined it. This was a game that promised you a cheap, gory slasher flick where you got to spy on a house full of scantily clad sorority girls. How could you possibly screw that up? By rigging the gameplay so that the player had to keep flipping through channels, and couldn't just sit back and enjoy all the titillating stuff the box-art promised.

Still, it was better than the rest of the Sega CD's FMV games.

sasazuka - 2013-12-16

Never played THIRD WORLD WAR. I'm watching video of it on Youtube.

That voice-over guy is very disconcerting. Like a "Voice of Doom" (like Lorne Greene reading news on CBC Radio during the Second World War).

Riskbreaker - 2013-12-16

Funny enough, Night Trap predicted almost 90% of modern games: you watch movies and from time to time you press buttons.

Herr Matthias - 2013-12-16

"You have seen the games, right?"

(show several scenes of gigantic, heavily pixellated, slow-moving football players)

Gmork - 2013-12-16

I knew this was bullshit back then, and I wore neon and flourescant triangle patterned clothing.

hammsangwich - 2013-12-16

If you ever owned a Genesis for more than 5 years, you got a Sega CD because you bought it at a garage sale for just to see what it could do. The answer, of course, was "not much."

I actually owned a JagCD. The games were actually better than regular Jaguar carts, and you could put any music CD into it and it created a magical light show based on the audio output.

Rosebeekee - 2013-12-16

I heard that Sega CD and 32X games won't work on a flashcart. Damn, I wanted to try all those great looking games.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-12-21

So many shitty consoles around the early to mid 90s.
