This guy is a douchebag for doing what he's doing, but it does raise an interesting point, and last week's Savage Love backs it up. A girl writes wondering why a cute guy at her workout facility casually smiles at her in passing, maybe says hello, and then doesn't take things any further, as if she is doing something wrong. Dan Savage's response is that men with any sense of respect for self or others have gotten to the point where "hitting" on a girl anywhere outside of a bar or online dating website is considered creepy, so she should take the initiative and ask him out instead.

So what it boils down to is that if a cute girl comes up to a guy and says nice things it's like "high five bro" and if it's a guy that comes up to a girl and says the same thing it's "auto-creep." I dunno.

The reason for the auto-creep reaction is... this video, basically. If you were a woman who watched this video, wouldn't you be a little bit skeeved out if some guy came up to you on the street? PUA is just a sort of apotheosis of a really pervasive view of gender relations and dating where women are targets whose resistance must be overcome in order to win man points. Also, a cute girl coming up to some guy on the street is somewhat less likely to rape him. That's got to factor in somewhere.

That's not to say that this is the way things ought to be, or that there's anything immoral about starting up a conversation with someone you find attractive. But, these things take place within a social context.
