Even if you don't like ZIGGY, give this one a chance, it really doesn't have much in common with anything else ZIGGY I've ever seen. Yes, Ziggy is the main character but it could be anyone. Those ZIGGY shorts seen elsewhere on the site, yes, also from Richard Williams, are traditional ZIGGY "comedy", this is something else entirely.

You can see why it never became a Christmas standard, it's a bit off-putting and surreal, but it's got a nice pay-off ending at the orphanage. I was 8 when this aired and wasn't sure whether I'd seen it but realized I almost certainly had when they got to the orphanage, unless I'm thinking of something else very similar. Also, the thief in here is pretty much a dry run for the thief in THE THIEF AND THE COBBLER.

tl;dr version: most ZIGGY is insipid, this is inspired.

Also, mute Ziggy, as seen-but-not-heard in this special, is a lot more tolerable as a character than talking Ziggy (from the shorts http://www.poetv.com/video.php?vid=84745 ).

Interesting. It's how Garfield improved immensely when it was put into long-form via TV specials and even the Saturday AM cartoon.

Comic strips are just so effing safe they fail to entertain. Not that TV versions can't be insipid and crap, too (see The Family Circus).

The long-form GARFIELDs are hit-and-miss, but I'll defend GARFIELD'S HALLOWEEN ADVENTURE to my death as being my favourite Halloween TV special, above even IT'S THE GREAT PUMPKIN, CHARLIE BROWN.

True, though the Nine Lives of Garfield was really trippy.

BTW, why are you all-capping the names of every cartoon character and/or title?

sasazuka - 2013-12-03

I try not to capitalize for characters (occasionally, I get confused if the name of the series is the name of the character) but I prefer caps to quotation marks for titles of series of movies, quotation marks I save for episode titles and such.

If I had the option, I'd italicize titles, but I don't think you can do that here.

Yeah, if I use the HTML (lesser-than symbol)italics(greater-than symbol)italicize(lesser-than symbol)/i(greater-than symbol), it hides the HTML tags but it doesn't italicize.

This, "A Cosmic Christmas" and "A Wish for Wings that Work" are my favorite holiday specials that never caught on.
