How about those new threaded comment boards! wooo!

It seems like there are people who actually think this was copy pasted out of laziness, rather than being an intentional reference, and thematic repetition.

I mean call it creative laziness all you like, but they didn't literally copy the code to put in less effort, and some people seem so swept up in video game nerd rage that they miss that. There are plenty of actual grounds to criticize the game on.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-11-07

It's just like how the backgrounds on old Hanna-Barbera cartoons repeating like they're on an endless loop when the characters run is a playful reminder of how we just saw the same background a few seconds ago, as well as all the other times the background has repeated in similar situations.

Having something repeated in a different situation is an homage. Using the exact same mo-cap is the video game equivalent of using stock footage.

Old_Zircon - 2013-11-08

Yeah, but in those Hannah Barbara cartoons it was a cost saving measure as well, and most of them are pretty creatively lazy.

In both cases It's a bit of both.

Isn't every new game a ripoff of the previous game?

Aelric - 2013-11-07

In this series, absolutely.

EvilHomer - 2013-11-07

At what point does your character die?

Gmork - 2013-11-07

I have a feeling the kind of people who actually say "brown" as if it's a "thing" in shooters or games in general, are the same people who poo-poo'd quake 1 for the same ridiculous reason.

Gmork - 2013-11-07

not for you, evilhomer, for ashtar

ashtar. - 2013-11-07

The outrages me! I demand that my expensive, brown FPS be ALMOST the same as all the other brown FPS games I play, not EXACTLY the same. How else am I to appreciate the marginal improvements in the brown graphics that I conflate with quality and 'fun'? GAMER CULTURE IS VALID AND IMPORTANT

Hooker - 2013-11-07

To be fair, the two Call of Duty games I played (1 and 2) were terrific and pretty brown.

Aelric - 2013-11-07

Still, the color palate of a movie or game is important, and brown/black/grey are all getting pretty overused.

OxygenThief - 2013-11-07

It's clearly a gritty reboot paying homage to the scenes and characters we know and love.

This is really what the public wants. Stuff we've seen before with more smoke added.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2013-11-07

The devs ripped a page out of Michael Bay's playbook.

memedumpster - 2013-11-07

You want to stop being a programming slave and actually get to go home while this game makes quadrillions and you make absolutely fuck all?

Reuse the damned animations. Neither the studio nor the gamers deserve better.

StanleyPain - 2013-11-07

I'm not a fan of the CoD games mainly because they are breeding grounds for what is easily one of the shittiest gaming communities on Earth, but at this point there literally is no way these games can get any better or different. Black Ops 2 and Modern Warfare 3 pretty much have all the features and combined aspects that anyone could ever hope for from this game, and that's from someone who really isn't too crazy about them anyway. (although I do like Zombies, which at this point they really should just make into a separate fucking game already)

Ghosts is pretty astonishing to see in action and just what a HUGE step backwards it is for the series and the ultimate shit result of what happens when your design philosophy is to just keep making a yearly version and don't give your audience ANY opportunity to add more life into the game with level editors or anything like that. In a nutshell, what they did with Ghosts is basically turn CoD into an in-app purchase kind of gameplay thing, although you can't actually buy anything with real money. They're trying to extend the gameplay by making it so that you now have to have multiple characters, then re-earn everything with each character to unlock more shit that's essential. These games already had balance issues, but this pretty much kills the multiplayer. What the hell ever happened to Unreal? Holy shit, we need a new Unreal Championship.

So, the games that have the stink of "worst gamers" is World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, Counter-Strike, League of Legends, Halo. Are there any popular online games that don't have awful users, or should we just stop trying to attribute it to individual games and admit that gamers across the board are awful?

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-11-07

Team Fortress 2 players are generally decent people.

StanleyPain - 2013-11-07

Halo actually got much better right around the release of 3 because I think at that point most of the awful man-children who played it, jumped ship to stuff like CoD. Some of my fondest online multplayer experiences (shooter-wise) have definitely been Halo 3, which by and large had a surprisingly good community which continued into the successors (which is nice since the single player games themselves were embarrassingly bad) It sounds obvious, but easily the best online communities are co-op style games. Mass Effect 3s online was great because of that.
