Heh, the pre-load catches John de Lancie just after "clopping".

EvilHomer - 2013-11-05

Uhuhuhuhuhuhuh.

Caught him just after clopping...

Hugo Gorilla - 2013-11-05

First time I've heard the word "creative" used to describe anyone who writes fan fiction.

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-11-05

You wouldn't know creativity if you caught it clopping to your plot.

Pillager - 2013-11-05

MLP & its fandom are the 4th stage prostate cancer of the Internet. However, I can't one star Q, Raven, or well done animation.

BHWW - 2013-11-05

Well, leave that to me.

BHWW - 2013-11-05

If I could one-star this more than once, I would. Consider this an extra one-starring in spirit, EvilHomer.

EvilHomer - 2013-11-05

You know, BHWW, you remind me of the ancient Tribal Pony leaders from Hearth's Warming Eve. The ones who froze to death in that blizzard because they couldn't set aside their hatred and cynicism.

But don't worry, I'll still protect you from the Windigos. The Fire of Friendship burns for everypony, even you!

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-11-05

The more you cry about bronies, the stronger they become.

EvilHomer - 2013-11-05

So a bit of context for the non-PoEny crew, who may be scratching their heads and wondering what all the fuss is about:

John de Lancie (better known as Q, the mischievous space-god from Star Trek: TNG) plays a recurring villain on My Little Pony: FiM, and the pegasister pony at the end is voiced by Tara Strong (Twilight Sparkle, whom I've discussed before). Like most of the cast, John and Tara are both very supportive of the show's fanbase, this fan animation being a great example of that. I mean, how cool is this? Two big name actors donates their time to sing a song for some random geek's Flash project. Regardless of your thoughts on the show as a whole, that's pretty darn heartwarming!

There are tons of clever in-jokes and references in this video, too, stuff that might be missed if you're not familiar with the show. For example, during the line "... made to sell toys / Plots were hardly very weighty", there's a shot of some G1 ponies, as seen from behind. This is a sly double-entendre, as "plot" is brony slang for "pony ass". Another neat reference is the way de Lancie's eyes derp out near the end; this is a visual allusion to Discord, his character on MLP. Again, your mileage may vary depending upon your current opinion of brony culture as a whole, but you have to admit, they've put a lot of care and attention to detail into this. It's a labor of love.

BHWW - 2013-11-05

"they've put a lot of care and attention to detail into this"

At the end of the day, no matter how many hours are spent buffing and polishing a turd, it's still a turd.

EvilHomer - 2013-11-05

You've clearly never seen the Mythbusters episode on dorodango.

The New Meat - 2013-11-05

I admire you for your dedicated and successful trolling

but for the love of god shut up

memedumpster - 2013-11-05

Q is wrong, G3 kicks the shit out of this new stuff, my god.

The New Meat - 2013-11-05

This is absolutely terrible. I know every nerd circlejerk loves to stroke itself about how it's an enclave of special little snowflakes, but I've never seen anything this smug and self-aggrandizing before. Wow, bronies are a totally unique and original and creative phenomenom because they write fan fic? Yeah, no other fandom has ever done that before. I'd be slightly more forgiving if this was some dumb fan thing, but John De Lancie should really know better.

Also, I like how this video feels it's necessary to slag on previous iterations of My Little Ponyas being DUMB SHIT FOR LITTLE GIRLS because, as we all know, ponies only became magically DEEP AND MEANINGFUL AND IMPORTANT when grown up manchildren got interested in it.

EvilHomer - 2013-11-05

I think somepony's a G1 faaaannnnn ... !

I'm sorry Q slagged old school ponies, but they really were dumb shit for little girls. (not that there's anything wrong with that! There is a place for all things under the sun, even dumb shit for little girls) And I think you've got your causality back to front; G4 isn't meaningful and important because manchildren got interested in it. Rather, manchildren got interested in it because it's meaningful and important.

Now then:

" I know every nerd circlejerk loves to stroke itself about how it's an enclave of special little snowflakes"

You are quite right! However, I submit that, in THIS case, the nerd circlejerk is more than a little justified. This isn't just a run-of-the-mill crapfest cobbled together by pack of basement dwellers with no talent or work ethic to speak of. This is a very well animated, very cleverly written musical number that includes passionate performances by talent from the show itself; surely you can see the difference between THIS and, say, an MS Paint Sonic the Hedgehog AMV.

Nor is this fan work an isolated case! Much as I hate bronies, I will admit that they are, as a whole, very high functioning, especially when compared against other fandoms - indeed, this was what impressed me the most about My Little Pony, back when I was still an active persecutor of ponykind, and my fateful meeting with Rainbow Dash upon the road to Damascus was still many years off. Bronies write better, work harder, and draw in a much wider range of talented individuals, including visionary artists like Andrew WK, than Trekkies, Furries, Homestuck fans, or Christians. What's more, the show's official staff goes WELL beyond any other fandom in terms of reaching out to the community. My favorite example of this was the story of My Little Pony: Fighting is Magic, a homebrew pony fighting game that was rescued from copyright hell by no less than Lauren Faust herself:

If you can think of any other fandom that *deserves* to circleclop itself even HALF as much as the MLP fandom, I'd love to hear about it.

oswaldtheluckyrabbit - 2013-11-05

Please remember this comment so you can come back and read it ten years later and see how asinine it is

Xenocide - 2013-11-05

This isn't all that unique, as much as people obsessed with complaining about bronies want to think it is.

There's an equally awful documentary about Firefly fans (you can watch it right now on Netflix, if you hate yourself) that pretty much does the same thing for them. No singing Q Horse, though.

The New Meat - 2013-11-05

"I think somepony's a G1 faaaannnnn ... !"

Actually, yeah, I do like G1. Bronies like to talk about how G1 was dumb shit for girls because it was full of boring surreal fever dream adventures like when they fought the penguin king that shot lasers out of his eyes or the giant man-eating plant criminals or the satanic dimension-hopping goat monster. Certainly nothing as exciting as watching Pinkie Pie learn how to bake a cake. Oh, and apparently because lazy Flash animation is SO MUCH better than lazy Korean slave labor animation.

The fact that the people behind the new pony show are savvy enough to pander to their fans does not in any way mean that bronies are specialer snowflakes than the nerds in less responsive fandoms. I do like how I make a post about bronies being smug and insufferable even for nerds and Evilhomer responds with a post that manages to be even smugger and more insufferable than the original video.

"If you can think of any other fandom that *deserves* to circleclop itself even HALF as much as the MLP fandom, I'd love to hear about it."

No fandom deserves to circlejerk itself period. It's not a sin for them to waste their time on this inane bullshit if they're having fun, but it's all still inane bullshit. I'm not going to give them a medal for it just because they learned how to use Flash.

cognitivedissonance - 2013-11-06

There are far, far worse things to be than a Brony. A Juggalo, for instance. Or an Objectivist. Bronies exhibit enthusiasm over cartoon horses. That's cool.

Unless there's a Bronuggalobjectivist faction. Then we're doomed.

CharlesSmith - 2013-11-06

And being a serial killer is worse than being a Juggalo, but I still wouldn't recommend either.

oswaldtheluckyrabbit - 2013-11-05

No

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2013-11-06

I think this broke my brain. Here are your stars.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-11-06

We said on that other video that this video was already up here, but you posted it anyway.

EvilHomer - 2013-11-06

No, no, I said I submitted it, but it died in the hopper. To the best of my knowledge, it's never been posted here; if it's a dupe, I apologize!

gmol - 2013-11-07

I have to say I'm pretty impressed. Production quality.

The rule will be ruled by its obsessives.
