oh the irony, R.I.P. Lou

infinite zest - 2013-11-03

I saw this a couple of weeks ago (before Lou's passing; one of those 'you can't skip this in five seconds' youtube ads) and was thinking "Is Lou going to pull a Tom Waits and sue?" If Lou Reed and I share one thing in common in this world, it's that neither of us played the PS4.

BorrowedSolution - 2013-11-04

Going to have to one-star this because "A big corporation used a song in a vapid ad-campaign...ABOUT VIDJA GAMES!" just doesn't hit my evil or interesting buttons.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2013-11-03

Come on guys, just put down the controllers and KISS ALREADY!

Actually, Lou was seen playing a video game on the cover of "New Sensations"

infinite zest - 2013-11-04

yeah but it was plugged into himself. My problem isn't the product placement; I actually thought it was a really clever commercial the first time I saw it. My problem is the fact that it's an out-of-tune cover of a beautiful that should have been pulled after his death. More people will see this video and hear this cover than people playing a PS4 will actually listen to the fucking Velvet Underground.

spikestoyiu - 2013-11-04

Well it's hard to be as pitch-perfect as Lou Reed.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2013-11-04

Second only to the Kevin Butler ads.

dockilljoy - 2013-11-04

I like this commercial. All of Sony's Playstation commercials have been pretty enjoyable. They make you instantly recall why games are fun. This one's definitely got that "online friends battling each other" memory.

RocketBlender - 2013-11-04

I don't know if I'm getting older or this next wave is sucking, but this generation is the first time since the N64 when I was capable of earning and spending my own money that I'll be skipping a console launch. Not just one, either, neither the PS4 nor the Xbox are doing it for me. I'm sure next summer when there's a couple games I'm interested in I'll buy some kind of system bundle for a game that's too tempting to pass up, hopefully after a price drop, but this month, the only release I even give a fuck about is that sequel to A Link To The Past, and even there I'm skeptical.

Binro the Heretic - 2013-11-04

The games just aren't there. You can have all the fancy-schmancy hardware, gritty textures and high-resolution light blooms you can wring out of the graphics processors you want, but if the games aren't fun, people aren't going to want to spend sixty or seventy bucks a pop on them.

And removing backwards compatibility or eliminating the used game market isn't going to help, either. In fact, it will actually hurt sales of the consoles.

Tech companies just don't get this. They're run by people with a hard-on for hardware and greedy assholes who misunderstand why people are willing to pay for games.

Nikon - 2013-11-04

I plan to wait on getting a PS4 until there are more PS4 games for me to import from Japan.

memedumpster - 2013-11-04

99% of video game ads are retarded nonsense and this ad is no different. Not shown : any reason to buy a PS4.

I am excited though, the PS2 is now used, and once the XBone is launched the price of used 360s will plummet, so I might get one.

What an exciting time to play old games.

Quad9Damage - 2013-11-04

Clarify something for me.

When the One launches, will the 360 eventually get disconnected from Microsoft's servers? And if that's the case, will there be no more patch delivery or video streaming unless I upgrade to a new console? Will my 360 eventually become an always offline brick that only plays used games as-is?

I've played online exactly one time since I got my 360 in 2009. I use my Live subscription exclusively for patches and Netflix. I'm starting to wonder if I should do a full migration to PC and Steamworks for this upcoming console generation. At least there I get less sense of impending doom and bullshit.

EvilHomer - 2013-11-04

9999Dam: I'm pretty sure that's an important part of the plan with EVERY online-content delivery system.

What I'm really looking forward to is when the XBone gets taken offline, and it can't even play used games as-is because, hey! No internet connection! When you stop to think about it, thanks to cloud-based business models and online dependency, the XBone will be extinct and unplayable well before that old beat-up NES you've got in your garage. Because technology!

Nominal - 2013-11-04

Yeah, Steam was the #1 factor in me not giving a shit about this or the next console generation. Everything eventually gets ported to the PC eventually, you don't have to put up with console company dick jousting, and console games never approach the great savings of Steam sales.

I can't remember the last time I paid more than for a AAA game. Usually I wait until they're .

badideasinaction - 2013-11-05

I think the more direct answer is the game studios are crunching the numbers and realize there's no value added to releasing on the new consoles when you have total market penetration with the current gen, and evidently hardware you can still squeeze better quality out of.

Most of the studios are using this last wave of current gen games to get that running start so they can hold off having to release a next-gen exclusive to a limited userbase. Because by the time the console is universally accepted, all the launch games are gonna be bargain bin priced. Meanwhile, game companies are raking in money off systems they've finally mastered programming for, and delaying the next gen commit with that last game and DLC.

Gmork - 2013-11-05

Not to mention the playstation controller sucks for any modern games that aren't God of War.

spikestoyiu - 2013-11-04

Or maybe people will watch this commercial and say "hey, I kinda like this song" and then search out the original. Some of you dudes are the biggest babies.

Riskbreaker - 2013-11-04

Video games are not about games anymore. Welcome to the future, do you want some doritos with your pizza?

Xenocide - 2013-11-04

Shooting guns, racing cars, and fighting with swords? And playing against other people ONLINE?

PS4 is going to change everything!

Quad9Damage - 2013-11-04

"PS4 games will be pretty. Take our word for it, because we're not showing any actual footage. Here is a dead man's pretty song."

dairyqueenlatifah - 2013-11-04

This commercial actually came out before he died.

Sony has been showcasing their new games primarily at events and on Youtube. For some reason they haven't been showing much in the way of television ads.

But then, Sony's ad campaigns have been absent of games since the PS2 days.

I'm actually far more excited for the PS4 than I was for any of the last-gen consoles, and I think all the negative nancies bitching about things that aren't even real (like "getting rid of used games", and "there aren't any games coming out!" even though this is just like every other console launch ever in terms of game drought) are funny.

I do agree it's absolutely pointless to get one at launch though, and I have no intention on getting one anytime soon.

Nominal - 2013-11-04

Some marketing department seems really concerned with convincing me that anyone gives a shit about Killzone.

Hailey2006 - 2013-11-10

This is about like how the last thing Lou ever posted on his Facebook was a My Little Pony picture.
