THE PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE!

garcet71283 - 2013-10-04

THE CAR!

squadoo - 2013-10-04

Holly crap you recognize the reference! Have some stars for the weekend.

Of course! Phantom Of The Paradise is one of the best/worst things out there. I think I've seen it, but maybe only a censored version, and it was like 15 years ago, so I don't really remember it very well, other than the fact that it has some of the craziest visuals that the 70's had to offer.

The last season of the Simpsons was actually pretty watchable. It wasn't GREAT, but I don't regret watching it, which is more than I can say for any other season in the past decade or so.

For those of you who haven't seen any newer Simpsons episodes, this sequence is primarily a shot by shot remake of the "new" intro. The "new" intro (which isn't so new anymore) is pretty awful, but this was nice. Bonus stars for Schlitzie the Pinhead and Hypnotoad!

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2013-10-04

The obscure references here make me the happiest. Especially the Ray Harryhausen and Ray Bradbury's Illustrated Man. That was so unexpectedly wonderful to see.

dementomstie - 2013-10-04

Who is it that kind of frowns after Bradbury draws on the Illustrated Man? I didn't recognize him. I get that he should be an author, it's Lovecraft, Poe, Bradbury and then who?

bac - 2013-10-04

I was trying to figure out the tattoo's! nice.

MyNameIsUnimportant - 2013-10-04

Richard Matheson.

dementomstie - 2013-10-05

Thank you, Unimportant.

Hooker - 2013-10-04

Just constant references and cameos to take the place of actual jokes. Three stars because I hate this but maybe that means it belongs?

Pillager - 2013-10-04

I'd rather see shout-outs & easter eggs referencing Alice in Wonderland, Lovecraft, Futurama, & all the Universal Monsters than say, Miley Cyrus & her VMA escapades.

bac - 2013-10-04

This was pretty decent.

deadpan - 2013-10-04

The Simpsons is really joyless and tired these days but a few stars for Guillermo del Toro's genuine enthusiasm. He's displaced Kevin Smith as the giant fanboy who also happens to make movies.

deadpan - 2013-10-04

Also:

"David Rees told me once 'Making a cultural reference isn't the same thing as making culture.' I cried for days. But we know now he was right."

- John Hodgman

Pillager - 2013-10-04

As someone who grew up on weird fiction & Godzilla movies, I'm glad Guillermo del Toro is carrying on the tradition.

poorwill - 2013-10-04

I really despise Del Toro. He is a terrible hack.

Hooker - 2013-10-04

A TERRIBLE HACK, ladies and gentlemen.

Jimmy Labatt - 2013-10-04

All my stars for Carl as Blade

dairyqueenlatifah - 2013-10-05

I didn't get a single one of the references here.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-10-07

"Let's just do a shotgun blast of obscure references! That'll make up for a complete lack of creative inspiration!"
