Together, the Tea Party fucks up everything for the GOP by not letting even any moderate candidates survive the primaries, let alone stand for election. In most places (that is, ones that aren't TOTALLY gerrymandered to hell, and even then it's not a safe bet), even the conservatives can't bring themselves to vote for someone that talks about privatizing every road, banning sex, lowering taxes for the rich even more, returning to the gold standard, and advocating secession.

It's like watching someone insist their house would quit burning down if only the firefighters would stop interfering and more fire from private sources was added to the blaze.

The Tea Party is inept at working at a national, but they are able to function at a local level. They're still a threat.

Cruz currently heads all other contenders for GOP POTUS nominee by over 10 points in all polls. The Republicans really are fucked right now. Their one big advantage is that they raped redistricting in 2011 thanks to stay-at-home dems.

I would not doubt that Cruz would come really close to winning if the economy is not in better shape in a couple years.

I think we're looking at a pretty ugly nomination fight no matter how you slice it. Not the more-or-less civil clown parade of last time, but a gory battle over the identity of the party.

I smell a Gingrich-style meltdown. He might ride a wave (as he did a few weeks ago) to some kind of popularity during the race for the nomination, but he'll do something dickish and unforgivable to the crazy-base, and that'll let the few mainstream Republicans get rid of him.

I'm not sure who could survive the primary process in the GOP. Rand Paul will have a hard time, too, but I think he'd last longer.

Yeah, the Repubs bitch about waste, yet their privatization shenanigans have cost the taxpayer billions (though since it went to friends and supporters, I doubt they'd call it "waste") and every stupid bill the house has put out that would shred the Constitution if not establish a theocracy over the last several years are a mounting expense they should be ashamed of, but of course, aren't.
