The Eldritch Horror makes it's appearance at 1:55

It's true. Larval shoggoths are known to nest on unsuspecting chins.

I like Fantasy Flight Games' dedication to making high quality board games, but it would be nice if they could maybe start trying to make game that don't take 5 hours to play and don't require a cafeteria-sized table to lay out the board and all the components.
That said, if you want to play a really good, scaled-down version of Arkham Horror, their "Elder Sign" game is perfect.

RocketBlender - 2013-09-05

Check out their two 'The Adventures!' games, Temple of Chac and Pyramid of Horus. The board is still a bit big, but they're much faster paced. If you want to outrun the boulder in Temple of Chac, you're got to keep moving forward, I've had rounds go pretty quick in that one. Plus the components are awesome. There's a bunch of minis in there you'll recognize as spoofs of famous adventure characters or tropes.

City of Thieves isn't a bad choice either, awesome components, fun game, 45 minutes to an hour. I wish I got to play that one more, but we usually end up playing lords of waterdeep instead, even though the two really aren't similar.

I tend to like the games that Fantasy Flight has done that don't have super fancy pieces and are more about the actual gameplay, namely Blue Moon City and Ingenious.
Blue Moon City though does have absolutely gorgeous art and those little dragons look great too.

Say what you will, but Fantasy Flight makes some fantastic games. Arkham Horror is a co-op classic (and quite frankly, almost one of the few co-op board games these days that isn't either zombies or a swarm of ___ that's basically the same thing as zombies), Netrunner is a lot of fun, and not designed to rape your wallet to death like other card games out there, and descent is amazing for that group of friends that wants to do a dungeon crawl without the time investment and character management that Pathfinder requires.

I'm going to have to look into this one, but I'm not sure it's going to be a buy, depending on how similar to Arkham it ends up being. Plus no minis to paint.

StanleyPain - 2013-09-05

Uh....wait what? They put back out Netrunner? Seriously?

*runs to game store*

RocketBlender - 2013-09-05

Yeah, it's been doing well too, BGG actually has the Netrunner reboot ranked among their highest. My favorite part about it is that FFG is running it with their 'living card game' business model. Basically, there are new cards being released, but in the form of (on amazon) data packs, which include 2-3 copies of each new card. The secret to winning isn't to buy a case of boosters with each new release, or get yourself super rare cards off the internet, as everyone has virtually the same set of cards. It's a breath of fresh air from the WoTC model.

I'm pretty serious about Dominion, which is a "every game is different" board game with cards, but not a dorky wallet collector game like Magic and the others.

They recently released it online. You can play the basic set for free. The rest costs money. for an expansion is better than , if all you want to do is try them out.

When I was young I played Illuminati, which is one of the best stoner board games you can find.

Steve Jackson Games also had a great card-boardgame called Hackers, if any of you remember playing that. I don't know if it would age well, I haven't played it since I was 18-19 years old.

While on the subject of old board games... Did anyone happen to ever play a Civilization (the board game) variant called Age of Renaissance? It was one of my favorite games and is long out of print. I tossed it when I moved from NYC.

RocketBlender - 2013-09-05

Funny you should mention that, baleen. One of the people in my Pathfinder Friday group has a bunch of classics (Catan's 1st edition, Carcassone, a Dune board game, to name a few) she's always showing, but all too often we just get straight down to pathfinder too fast to play any of them. I was looking at Age of Renaissance last Friday since she had her stack by the door thinking it looked fun. I might ask her if we can take a break from pathfinder Friday to give it a go.

Dominion is a personal fav, I have the core set with the Alchemy expansion. (I think they decided to start including it because in all honesty, Alchemy doesn't really get along with the other expansions. They have additional resource cards that are required to purchase the stacks in the series, so you really have to use several alchemy cards to make them worth using at all.

Have you played Ascension by any chance? Every time we break out Dominion at the store, it inevitably gets mentioned. I keep meaning to give it a try, but I always try and get and get a play in myself before purchasing a new game.

memedumpster - 2013-09-05

I completely suck ass at Dominion, the worst anyone's ever seen, and it's still a blast to play.

baleen - 2013-09-06

I have never played Ascension or even heard of it, it looks interesting.

We have 7 of the 9 Dominion boxes. Vaccarino has stated that he's not publishing any more expansions, but has stated that could also change if Rio Grande needs more money, whatever that means. Alchemy is one I've been hesitant to buy for the reasons you mentioned. Guilds is the only other one I don't have, partly for the same reasons. The cards in Guilds just don't seem to jive with other expansions. The two essential expansions for Dominion are Dark Ages and Intrigue.

I was researching how I could make some of my own nice looking supply cards, because the whole system is very open to experimentation. Vaccarino is very involved in the Dominion community and goes on Boardgamegeek to answer basically every question anybody has about anything. He's very encouraging of people to make fan supplements, which is unusual. It seems like a pretty irritating process. Why is stuff so hard.

We have TWO Catan 15th anniversary sets, which I hacked to work with Cities and Knights. I love that game.

Let me know what you think of Renaissance. Fair warning: It's a long fucking game.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-09-05

I tried to play this game with some of my family and friends. It took about an hour to set everything up and read the rules. It was more fun to read the different actions in the locations than it was to try to track down the monsters and seal the gates and stuff. It also sells for a ridiculous amount on eBay if I recall too, but I didn't buy it.

StanleyPain - 2013-09-05

This game just barely released, so I don't think this was what you saw on Ebay. Most likely, you probably spotted an older edition of Arkham Horror (which goes back to the mid 1980s) which are huge collectors items.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-09-05

ohh, it was Arkham Horror. My mistake!

Nominal - 2016-09-30

Oh shit never saw this video when it was posted.

Yeah Eldritch Horror is awesome. It's a more streamlined and less frustrating version of Arkham Horror on a global scale, heavily borrowing the action system from Fury of Dracula.

I highly recommend it if you liked anything at all about Arkham Horror. I definitely recommend picking up the Forsaken Lore expansion since it adds to all the base game decks to the levels they should have been at release.
