The rationale I've heard is that it's a more durable system, better for smaller kids (hence the release matching the new Pokémon game), since one of the big service issues has been the hinges.

That said, I'm not sure about the sloping form factor. At 130 bucks and offering all of the important functionality, it looks like it will sell okay. Better than the Game Boy Micro, though that's not saying much.

Xenocide - 2013-08-29

These people smile too much.

Honestly, the 3D functionality is pretty unimpressive in the vast majority of 3DS titles. Offering up a cheaper alternative for people who don't want it (or who just get headaches from it) seems like a good plan. Most people seem to get tired of the 3D pretty quickly and leave it turned off anyway.

RocketBlender - 2013-08-29

I have one because, quite frankly, that's where Nintendo puts their good games these days. Fire Emblem was an absolutely amazing game, and I've always love the Mario & Luigi RPGs. I go through pretty much the same ritual for every game released for the thing. Turn on the 3D, notice a few things have a few cool depth tricks, (In all honesty, nothing jumps out off the screen at you on the 3DS. If anything, things seem to go the other way, deeper into the screen. Those of you that grew up during my time may remember that 'Viewmaster' toy, the 3DS is pretty much like that.) get umcomfortable sitting so stiffly, shift slightly, then turn off the 3D since I just ruined my perspective, and never turn it on ever again.

I'm not honestly sure I'd of gone for the 2DS though if it were an option at the time. It's not that much less for something that looks so damn uglier than the normal units.

Quad9Damage - 2013-08-29

I'm thinking about getting one but first I have to convince myself that it's worth it.

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2013-08-29

Is Fire Emblem the game with the sexualized 12 year-old girl that you can romance, or the game with the DLC built entirely around fanservice of the female characters in bikinis?

Oh wait, it's both.

Kid Fenris - 2013-08-30

Settle down there, Caminante Wants Dessert.

I agree with Rocket; Fire Emblem is mostly great. So are Super Mario 3D Land and the new Kid Icarus. Also Attack of the Friday Monsters and Crimson Shroud.

That said, I actually like the compact flip-down design of the 3DS, so I probably would've picked it even though I don't use the 3-D.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-08-29

Ahh, another giant clunky handheld that only little kids will enjoy. The thing looks about as sleek as the original Gameboy.

Spaceman Africa - 2013-08-29

I love all the fanboys crying over this who can't comprehend that a console maybe isn't marketed towards them.
The whole thing looks kinda ugly but I guess it keeps the kids from snapping the hinges.

Spaceman Africa - 2013-08-29

Also it's almost 0 less so sure, I'd buy it

Raggamuffin - 2013-08-29

hmm. I've read that it'll be cheaper than the nearest 3ds.

candyheadrobot - 2013-08-29

Oh, this actually wasn't a joke. Dunno why Nintendo is wasting their billion dollar profits on making another game system, but I might check it out since the idea of carrying Cave Story around with me is appealing.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-08-29

Given that between April 1st and June 30th, the Wii U has only sold 160,000 units (that's REALLY bad, by the way), Nintendo is probably looking to bolster a part of the market where it doesn't suck so much.

GQ - 2013-08-29

Well, the 3DS has broken from it's shaky start to be in the "printing money" stage that the DS entered into, thanks to some REALLY stellar system exclusive games. And this can essentially do everything the 3DS does (minus 3D and folding) so it's just increasing thier access with the lowered price.

candyheadrobot - 2013-08-29

Egads :D my Nintendo fanboy friend has been pretty quiet about Nintendo lately, so I guess that's where it's coming from. From what I've heard they'll weather the storm, but furnishing three redesigns of the same system in three years sounds like mismanagement. They'll probably still do better than Xbox in the long run though.

Aelric - 2013-08-29

I've heard Nintendo has stockpiled more money than Apple by setting company coffers aside instead of investing every dollar for the past 30 years. enough to keep the company operating until the 2070's according to the rumor, which I heard a few months ago on the Giant Bombcast. I dunno if that is true, and I'm sure there are big money holes they could fall into, but I think Nintendo has the wiggle room to experiment.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-08-29

That's one strategy, I suppose, but what I wonder is how long they can milk Mario, Zelda, and the rest of the 20+ year old IPs that they keep trotting out year after year.

THA SUGAH RAIN - 2013-08-29

Aelric: Nintendo has about 9 billion (USD) in cash and Apple has about 30 billion. Microsoft, which has always had a company policy of holding enough cash to operate for years without making a single dime of revenue, has over 77 billion in cash.

misterbuns - 2013-08-29

lol #haters

boner - 2013-08-29

I'm going to buy one for my manchild

Quad9Damage - 2013-08-29

So it's a Nintendo DS, but with a number in the title and compatible with 3DS games?

Old_Zircon - 2013-08-29

It's shaped like an Atari Jaguar controller with a touchpad where the keypad should go.

Nominal - 2013-08-29

Dumb kids kept snapping off the hinge? I'd rather have it fold up to protect the screen.

Aubrey McFate - 2013-08-29

They can market it to kids under 7 with no reservations because there's no 3D, so there's also that.

Nikon - 2013-08-29

It looks like it's the size of a Game Gear and it's region-locked. No thanks.

EvilHomer - 2013-08-29

But will it attract boyfriend-free girls?

themilkshark - 2013-08-29

Definitely! I mean, have you played Sprung for the original DS system??? A handsome guy wrote a letter about it to Nintendo Power years back!

Gmork - 2013-08-29

The kind of people who are a fan of handheld systems.

CIWB - 2013-08-29

The 3D feature on Nintendo 3DS isn't meant for kids under 7, so Nintendo is making a version without it that is also cheaper, thus removing any barriers that might make parents hesitant to buy a new Nintendo portable for their kids. The original DS is dead, so this was actually a necessary and smart idea on Nintendo's part.

However, 25-year old manchildren on video game message boards went absolutely apeshit over it, because they simply can't comprehend that Nintendo would make a product that isn't meant for them. Unless you're in elementary school, you're not supposed to want a Nintendo 2DS.

Change - 2013-08-29

I think it's kind of cute, and think people who care about this flipping or not flipping are weird dorks.

Binro the Heretic - 2013-08-29

I really thought this was a joke when I first saw it. The thing that really made me suspicious was the open touting of the backwards compatibility.

Of course, they SAY it's "backwards compatible" with DS titles, but do they mean I can just plug a DS cartridge into it and play or do I have to pay to download titles from their online store?

Rosebeekee - 2013-08-29

If it works like a normal 3DS, you should be able to just put in a DS cartridge.

THA SUGAH RAIN - 2013-08-29

Pussy magnet.

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2013-08-29

lmfao what the fuck is this shit
