As a kid, me and my brother loved the Thor and Iron Man comics, and we both kind of loved Loki as our favorite villain. So, as I go into beard mode here: This version of Loki is basically the best way to get him on-screen. In the traditional comics, Loki is sort of like The Joker only with god-like powers and if he were interpreted that way I think the movies could have gone down a weird, terrible route with Loki becoming some sort of Riddler-esque thing where whatever actor played him would just be doing some over-the-top thing. The movie Loki isn't quite as "cool" as the comic version, but I honestly don't think he would work on-screen as well.

I don't really understand how super-boring is the best way to bring him to the screen.

also Hiddleston has a huge, annoying 'Cumberbatch-level' fandom following for whom he can apparently do no wrong.

I left this comment below, but I think its to appeal to girls and get them into the theater. I know a lot of girls that love these movies and hate comics. For me its almost vice-versa. I don't hate the movies, I just feel like a comic is a much purer expression. An author, an artist, some ink, and you got a comic. Vs. the 1000 something visual effects people involved in the film.

Loki was whiny and dull in the Thor movie, but he had some amusing moments in Avengers. This is more down to writing than the actor's performance, though. Hiddleston did a pretty good job with the material he was given.

The comic version has been written so inconsistently over the years that at this point I don't know if it's possible for him to be interpreted faithfully in movies.

That's really the biggest problem with the Avengers: they don't have any interesting villains. Thanos? Kang the Conqueror? While it's always possible to come up with a threat big enough to challenge the Avengers, it's pretty difficult to come up with one that is a good thematic fit.

"Acts of Vengeance" from many years ago worked reasonably well, with Loki secretly getting all the heroes' main villains to switch heroes and maybe get somewhere for once. If nothing else, it's responsible for the "Captain America, I command you to ... WANK" image.

You don't understand. Many of those fans are girls.

Girls are cheering for someone who isn't me. :(
