I have no expectations that all German POWs in England were treated this humanely. But at least some were, and that gives me hope.

I imagine it requires a culture that has been through enough wars, winning and losing and getting devastated in the process, to understand that wars end, enemies put down their knives, and life requires letting go of animosity. So I could see that in the English mindset, but not really in the American mindset (we've never ever lost a war, you know).

That German soccer player addressing the crowd is the most adorable Nazi I've ever seen.

In these wars the soldiers still saw the other side as humans and relatable. We don't do that anymore.

Not surprised some of them stuck around for women. There was a POW camp in my hometown for Italians, and a number of them stuck around and married local girls. It's comforting that nationalism doesn't stand a chance against a pretty girl.

This would never happen again.
