That last tag makes sense now.

I don't really care for how the writers of the comic go for the easiest cop of at being offensive and shocking. In the comic The Mother Fucker (formerly Red Mist) sends some guys to rape Katie to get back at kick ass which is one of the most eye roll inducing things Ive seen. This looks interesting nonetheless. Sleigh Bells song is a little out of date from trailer music though. Im grouchy.

Quad9Damage - 2013-06-21

The Mother Fucker also murders a group of children with submachine guns. Stars and Stripes is killed and his dog's severed head is shoved over his face.

The book is nothing but a test of how mean and unsettling it can get.The first volume was more over-the-top stupid.

That said, I actually did enjoy the first Kick-Ass movie. so even though I've sold both of my Kick-Ass graphic novels on eBay I'll probably watch this.

Since the first one bombed at the box office, let's make another!

fatatty - 2013-06-21

I like that making million and million more than your costs is bombing these days.

It's often said that to make a profit you need to pull in about twice as much as you put out in the movie business. Not sure how true that is but by that measurement it would definitely be considered at best a lackluster box office.

I always wondered what happened to the characters after the end of the first movie!

Oh wait, no I didn't.

I know some people who are genuinely into this series. Not just the movie, either, I mean the whole "Kick-Ass extended universe" or whatever they call it. Apparently there's all kinds of comics and backstories and genuine superpowers, you know, basically all the standard superhero franchise crap that, way back when I saw the trailer for the first movie, I had wrongly assumed was going to be subverted by Kick-Ass.

I really don't know what to say to the guys.

Quad9Damage - 2013-06-21

The Kick-Ass books are horrendous. I mean complete garbage. The only way they can really be appreciated is by assigning deeper meanings to them, which is what I assume these fanboys are doing. At least in the first movie Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goldman shoveled away enough of Mark Millar's shit to create a fun two hours.

I read somewhere that Millar was displeased with how 'soft' the movie ended up being so he made the Kick-Ass 2 book ten times more offensive.

EvilHomer - 2013-06-21

Yeah, from what little I've seen / heard of the comics, I can totally see where people are coming from on the offensiveness issue. For me, personally, that doesn't really bug me so much. I *prefer* my offensive entertainment to be delivered tongue-in-cheek, like Lobo or GWAR, but unironic child murder doesn't turn me off as much it probably should.

My biggest issue with KickAss, at least as far as the movie's concerned, was how... standard it was. See, when I first heard about the movie, people were selling it to me like it was going be some smart, subversive sendup of the superhero genre. It was going to be about superheroes who had no superpowers, average Joes in costumes doing exactly what you'd expect average Joes in costumes to do: absolutely nothing. Basically, the way it was sold to me, it was going to be Watchmen as a comedy. What if superheroes were real? AND what if superheroes weren't actually super?

For the first twenty minutes or so, it looked like my impression was correct. KickAss went to stop some criminals! KickAss got his ass beat! Haha, this is gonna be fun! But then it all fell apart. There were some training montages, like every other superhero film. And then KickAss was tearing through hordes of faceless baddies, like every other superhero film. By the second half of that shit, the entire "regular shmucks" conceit that got me into the theatre in the first place was out the fucking window. I'd been had! It wasn't a subversion of superhero films. It was just a plain old superhero film.

Now, I realize that it's mostly my own damn fault for expecting something different. Maybe if, instead of saying it was "Watchmen with regular people", my friends had of sold it as "Punisher with a loli" I would have been able to enjoy it more. Because that's what it was. Punisher with a loli.

The whole first half of the movie is Poe's law: so shitty it's indistinguishable from satire. I didn't realize the movie was playing it straight until he get's the pretty girl by pretending to be gay. When I thought the movie was going to be a satire, I figured the whole thing would blow up in his face and be funny, sad and awkward. But then it worked.

In a way though, the movie did what a good satire can do. With its utterly sad attempt at writing romance and uncritical glorification of violence it really highlighted everything I hate about comic books.

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-06-21

If you want The Punisher with lolis, you should watch/read Gunslinger Girl.

And Gunsmith Cats.

Quad9Damage - 2013-06-22

I dunno why, but movie Hit-Girl seemed more of a selling point when she was small. Grown Chloe just makes her look awkward.

Hooker - 2013-06-21

I know nothing about the comic. The first Kick-Ass movie had a fun Nic Cage performance, but the rest of the movie was a teenager's selfish revenge fantasy (hero is picked on, hero beats everyone up, everyone now loves hero, hero starts sleeping with the prettiest and most popular girl in school) with the added twist of having a 12 year old girl get violently beat up by an adult.

Just a fucking ugly movie. FFE (five for evil)

amen brother.
