My degree is in music education, and one of my student teaching placements was in a 4th and 5th grade intermediate school. The kids were learning recorder, but the teacher didn't think it was fair to make them spend the money on 'real' recorders--meaning ones that could be played in tune--so she just let them get cheap ones from the dollar store (this school wasn't exactly in the wealthiest neighborhood). It was quite an experience, 25 kids blowing their brains out on cheap dollar store recorders.
