The new Naruto game is looking good.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-06-13

"This is a fantasy based on reality."

In what possible way does that sentence have any bearing on anything in this game? Each FF installment is basically an excuse to have a setting where you can have any weapon, architecture, or magical thing and it allegedly makes sense (like just about every other major franchise of its ilk).

Five for whatever pact with eldrich beings it is that's keeping this stuff alive.

retrocious - 2013-06-13

I think it means they turned down the saturation a little bit

misterbuns - 2013-06-13

Oh awesome I get to play an effete emo clown who swings around the bumper of a Chevy Spyder?

Japan can't make anything new and the nerds of the world just don't care.

kingofthenothing - 2013-06-14

well, at least these guys aren't wearing six different outfits all mashed together. That's... a start. Didn't another of their game previews start with people walking down stairs and being shot at?

RocketBlender - 2013-06-13

For the tags.

Still, the game does look pretty good, I know I'll go for it.

Bootymarch - 2013-06-13

15xv17minus2 is my favorite autechre song!

Pretty Boys with Perfect Hair XV: Swords We Couldn't Possibly Hold

Merzbau - 2013-06-13

From wikipedia:
"The ratio of real-time event scenes and pre-rendered FMVs is 7:3."

: /

Xenocide - 2013-06-13

This game has been in development since before the PS3 launched. It took a long time to get everyone's hair sufficiently shiny.

fedex - 2013-06-13

that takes a lot of digital cream

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2013-06-14

They're talking about real-time cutscenes vs pre-rendered cutscenes, not gameplay vs cutscenes

Gmork - 2013-06-13

The first final fantasy i'd bother playing. And it looks mediocre.

Xenocide - 2013-06-13

So they've given up on even making it an RPG anymore, and just shoved the Kingdom Hearts engine in there.

I guess if you ever wanted to play a K-pop music video, (guest starring one of the Assassin's Creed guys) your ship has come in.

RocketBlender - 2013-06-13

I'm excited too!

fedex - 2013-06-13

giant swords LOL

takewithfood - 2013-06-13

I do not see the appeal.

Sexy Duck Cop - 2013-06-13

I gave up on Final Fantasy about a decade ago, but that small part of me that's nostalgic for VII sees the appeal in this. From the looks of this trailer, for once all the absurdity and over-the-top silliness of modern FF has a real-world setting to bounce off of. Instead of taking place on a planet whose creation myth involves an autistic RuPaul shitting Las Vegas into an aquarium, the relatively restrained location could actually ground the story and give it more weight. That last shot of a Behemoth crawling through the parking garage is completely unprecedented in the series.

In the best-case scenario, this game could be like a superhero movie, where characters in outrageous costumes fly around and swing enormous swords at oversized monsters, while the real world just watches on in awe. I doubt anyone at Square is clever enough to see the potential in "Nolanizing" the series, but right now, FFXV desperately needs to reign in the franchise's excess.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2013-06-13

Meh. I've been a Final Fantasy fan since FFVI came out. With the exception of Final Fantasy XIV, I've played them all, more than once. I've loved a few of them, and liked all of them (yes, even X-2, XIII, and XIII-2, and Dirge of Cerberus).

Ever since FFX, the series has gotten farther and father away from anything identifying with Final Fantasy. X did away with world maps, airships, and any sense of freedom. XI did away with the idea of self contained narratives. XII did away with memorable soundtracks, any form of characterization, and the idea that you, the player, play the game. And then XIII went all out by removing any sense of exploration and anything remotely resembling a Final Fantasy game. It even kind of mocked you for liking them by adding an "Auto Battle" feature, basically reducing strategy to "switch roles really fast".

And now, here we are. Final Fantasy XV, the mutated remains of a game that was supposed to come out for the PS3 as a side entry to XIII, now reformed as a main entry, that looks far more like Kingdom Hearts Re-skinned than anything that would come to mind when someone mentions Final Fantasy. They've already talked about making sequels to this game, which still doesn't even have a release date. People seem to forget so fast that they pulled the same crap with XIII, and everyone bitched about it.

Will I play it? Oh sure, I will. Will I like it? Probably. Will I feel like an empty shell of a human being, being mentally raped by corporate mediocrity while doing so? Most definitely.

candyheadrobot - 2013-06-13

Simliar history here, but even though I haven't completed an FF since 9 out of lack of enjoyment (actually need to go back and finish 12), I can't say that this looks like a bad entry. Not that any FF since 10 has been terribly similar to the last, this actually looks unique even in comparrison to KH (who's team actually helped to build the game). I know this sort of thing isn't very many people's cup of tea anymore, which makes it more of a bother to defend, but it doesn't look like anything else I've seen in an rpg or action game, so I can't see the problem in saying it actually looks good. I guess maybe I'm hoping more that they learned from their mistakes, and have engineered a better game, but from a semi-fan prespective, could you name anything that you think is better in the same vein?

Side note: I'll never understand how people can be so cool with stuff like D&D, Pokemon, and Catan, but think stuff like this is such a lower form of entertainment. Then again people love the Avengers movie, so that's probably an explaination in itself.

FABIO - 2013-06-13

The music quality downgrade sucks. I still remember all the music from the older FFs I haven't touched in over a decade. I think FF7 was the last soundtrack I remembered. I can only remember one song from 8 (only because it was in the trailer), two songs from 10 (it's hard to forget the Rob Zombie knockoff), and absolutely nothing from anything else. I think Xenogears was the last Square game with consistently memorable music.

candyheadrobot - 2013-06-13

Definitely agree, but that's probably because Umetsu is like 90 now, not many people come up to snuff as far as that's concerned. Speaking of Xenogears, I guess that's probably a good answer to my question, Monolith Soft's last entry was leaps and bounds better than any of the FF 13 sequels, and their latest probably will be better than this FF. Still, that's one out of who knows how many crap games. I'd much rather play this FF, than Ryze or whatever that 300 qte game is spelled as.

Candlejackv616 - 2013-06-14

" It even kind of mocked you for liking them by adding an "Auto Battle" feature, basically reducing strategy to "switch roles really fast"." Thank you, I don't know why I have never been able to articulate my huge distaste for FF13s battle system, but that sums it up very nicely. It really did feel that way, and on top of the walking down corridors simulator parts of the game and characters that make Tidus and Vaan seem likable (ok maybe not Vaan) it was just such a miserable slog.

So I have to ask though why the hate for 12? I thought that was probably the last FF game (for a console not counting 11) that was still more or less a FF game. I agree on the soundtrack issues, but combat wise the Gambit system worked well and didn't take you out the decision making experience the way 13 did. Granted I know ppl who played the game and basically set up gambits to the point of it WOULD play itself, never really got that, seemed boring to play it that way.

I'd also have to disagree to a point on characterization, as excluding Vaan that game had some interesting characters, then again i suppose i have soft spot in my heart for that Ivalice based on playing tactics and to a lesser extent Vagrant Story.

I agree with you on 10 but id argue in comparison to what FF is now, that game has exploration and surprises in spades. Plus the story was genuinely interesting.

Riskbreaker - 2013-06-13

This is so cliche it could pass for a parody, except is real.

FABIO - 2013-06-13

I've always wanted to be a fly on the wall in the writing room for all the modern Final Fantasy games. To hear someone go, "Okay, it's a shot for shot recreation of Star Wars, but with two useless main characters." Or "It's about gods who force mortals to do their bidding, except none of it makes sense, is self-contradictory, and has zero actual bearing on the story. Also there is no story."

What's really weird though is they actually had a functioning story for X. Like it actually had a solid theme: the old making way for the new. Not only that, it carried that theme through multi levels of conflict: external (giant monster causing suffering via an endless cycle started by ancestors + ghost rulers who refused to die and pass on), personal (Tidus chastising Yuna for killing herself to end the cycle then finding out that he's a holdover memory who has to do the same), and internal (breaking out of your father's shadow).

So someone had an idea of elements that an actual working story contained, but then they went and fucked it up with the usual annoying jrpg stock characters. What's weird though is you never saw another game that anything close to that kind of understanding of story. What happened to that guy? Did they fire him? Was it an intern?

poorwill - 2013-06-13

FFX is one of the worst games I have ever played. Maybe the story did make sense, but it was despicable. All the characters were unlikeable shits.

Hooker - 2013-06-13

I made a dedicated effort to get through FFX. I hated every moment of it, but I kept pushing myself, telling myself I could get through it. I finally did, but haven't played a Final Fantasy game since and cut my gaming down by about half afterwards, and gradually widdled that number down over time. So, that's FFX's legacy for me.

Sexy Duck Cop - 2013-06-13

I'll bet anything the mentality at a Final Fantasy pitch session is identical to the pitch session for any other major video game: MORE EMOTION.

Video game writers are typically engineering-minded people who happen to be fans of pop art. They don't understand how stories are constructed, but they know what they've seen and liked. This serves them well for flashy battle sequences, but when the time comes to tell a DEEP, EPIC STORY THAT WILL MAKE YOU CRY AND THAT'LL SHOW ROGER EBERT they have no understanding of the emotional underpinnings that cause people to react emotionally. Hence, we get shit like playing a Moby song over a broken statue of children playing while a hulking space marine uses his chainsaw to splatter alien blood all over a one-eyed teddy bear.

FABIO - 2013-06-14

But that's the thing. FFX was different in that it HAD all the pieces in place for the underpinnings you're talking about.

But the characters themselves were just so terrible that you didn't give a fuck. Add in the pacing and all the filler crap and the end result still sucked.

My point though is that even though FFX ultimately sucked, you never saw anything close to basic story structure in any of the later games.

Candlejackv616 - 2013-06-14

10 is actually a really good game considering the battle system was on point, the way you made accessories and handled your summons was pretty cool. Also it was lots of fun pretty much breaking the game by messing around with Rikku's mix ability.

Story wise it was great in comparison to previous games, as I dug all the already mentioned aspects of it here. Plus I thought it was ballsy for the time to have a FF game that partly a commentary on religion, more to the point the dangers of it, in regards to that universe's screwed up history.

Character wise...that's a mixed bag for me, I mostly played using Auron, Rikku and Lulu and occasionally Wakka. From a stand point of personality they were all sorta ranging from cool (at the time for me auron and lulu were the shit, oh high school me) to tolerable (Tidus, Kimari, Rikku) to just annoying (Yuna, and especially Wakka).

In regards to this video though, I suppose I'll play as everything Ive read about it gameplay wise, while being very Kingdom Hearts like, sounds infinitely more fun to play than 13 and its inexplicable sequels.

Hooker - 2013-06-13

So it's Devil May Cry? Crazy to think that I already played this game when I was still technically a teenager. It was breathtaking back then!

kingofthenothing - 2013-06-14

Young'in. Yeah, it does look a lot like Devil May Cry. Someone borrowed my copy of Borderlands and lost it, so they gave me Devil May Cry 4 as a replacement. That game sucked. I wrote a shitty review for it on Gamefaqs because I felt like it had to be taken down a few notches.

This looks A LOT like DMC4. Only it's got possibly lesbian Cloud and two other anemic looking dudes.

lionpaladin - 2013-06-14

I wish I could get excited over this; or rather, allow myself to be, but I can't. I want to, it looks nice, but after pre-ordering XIII and getting an absolutely shit RPG in return, I can just no longer see myself getting hyped. I have played FF since the NES days, I played every one I could get my hands on as I grew up, but XIII was just..it killed me.

Looks nice, but I'm not gonna hold my breath.

chumbucket - 2013-06-14

Another boring giant sword game brought to you by square.

Candlejackv616 - 2013-06-14

I will laugh the day they make a concerted effort to release a game without oversized novelty looking anything.

Jericho - 2013-06-14

bad music, awful art direction, and an action rpg made by a company that has no idea how to make action rpgs (90 percent of people who make action rpgs do not have any idea, but square enix most of all)

misterbuns - 2013-06-14

Anyone who enjoys this and thinks they are above Michael Bay's Transformers should have their opposable thumbs revoked by the totem of natural selection.

misterbuns - 2013-06-14

Sorry, I forgot my hat.

Kid Fenris - 2013-06-14

Which Final Fantasy game made a joke about a giant robot pissing on someone?

StanleyPain - 2013-06-14

I haven't finished an FF game since 7 and I don't think the profound disappointment of that will ever wear off, really.
