I always suspected that they would be really heavy, like sabbath or something. Needless to say i was suprised when i finally heard them, I've grown to like them a lot over the years though.

The original mix (it's actually the only one on CD, but only the first vinyl run has it) of Anthem Of the Sun, particularly the A side, is every bit as weird as "cool" 60s out-psych stuff like Fifty Foot Hose, but yeah they're definitely not what you expect when you're 12 and you recently discovered Sabbath and see this band with skeletons all over everything.

I never ended up appreciating them at all, but I did love this song (and video) as a kid.

It's kind of the opposite for me, I've gotten to like certain parts of their output a ot over the past 6 years or so, but I don't think I successfully listened to this song all the way through until last year.

I do get the feeling a lot of my favorite stuff (the first three studio albums in particular) is the stuff that deadheads like the least, though. Kind of like how I think Their Satanic Majesties Request is by far the best Stones album. Apparently that's some kind of heresy among Stones fans.

Never much liked this song; it didn't have any of the juice of classic Grateful Dead material. That said, in retrospect I'm glad they did it; they'd been making music for a long time, they'd earned the right to do whatever the hell they wanted to, and that's good enough for me. So I guess I like the concept of the song better than the song itself (see also Traveling Wilburys).

I remember buying this album just to learn the bass line and then nobody would fucking play it with me.

"End of the Line" is one of my favorite songs, so I don't mean to demean their entire catalog. I'm just left with a sense that they didn't deliver on the potential of George Harrison + Bob Dylan + Roy Orbison (+ a couple other guys).

In all fairness, the names alone set an almost impossibly high bar.

Good point. Still, a lot of the time it felt like they didn't have any better ideas than "okay, now it's Bob's turn to sing a verse", and that feels like a tragic under-utilization of that much talent.

At this point I find myself asking myself, "well what exactly did you expect of them, smart guy?" and I guess I really don't know. It just feels like the Traveling Wilburys didn't come close to what George / Roy / Bob did in their solo careers, like maybe they never figured out how to build off one another. That said, that much musical talent has more than earned the right to play whatever they want; any time George / Roy / Bob / the other two want to get together and jam, they have my blessing.

They're no MAsked Marauders, but I guess I can't recapture greatness like that.
