This video enraged me beyond reason. The amount of smug, pointless, privileged outrage on display in this video is really overwhelming. Douchebaggery upon douchebaggery. Five for evil.

SolRo - 2013-05-15

If you're directly helping the homeless via your douchebaggery, it cancels out the doucheocity of your actions and you just end up being a normal person spending your own time and money to help out people while giving a big fuck you to a douche designer.

fedex - 2013-05-15

so, you are outraged at his outrage?

GovtCensor - 2013-05-15

Sorry, if he wants to "help" the homeless -- apparently by walking up to them on the street and wordlessly handing them clothes while someone films him -- then I'm all for it. The CEO is a douchebag but he's also correct. As far as I understand it, A&F has actually vile and exploitative hiring and firing practices that people have been outraged over for years. It might also be usefully pointed out that all their clothes are made in foreign deathtraps by desperately poor people. This guy's not outraged by any of that. Instead he's outraged that someone dared to say out loud that some people are more privileged and attractive than others and have products marketed to them. His response is to find some actually disenfranchised people and use them as wordless props for what I can only assume is some attempt to work through leftover outrage from high school. Why? Because homeless people are poor and ugly, HAW HAW take that, you CEO!

Guess what? The Gap sells ugly clothes to everyone. Have at it.

Change - 2013-05-15

Wow.

You're kind of a petty dumb douchebag.

GovtCensor - 2013-05-15

You forgot "lazy".

Change - 2013-05-15

I don't know if you're lazy, or not.

You're definitely dumb, petty, and a douchebag, though.

GovtCensor - 2013-05-15

I'm sorry, I've offended you somehow. Did you make this video? I fail to see why you'd want to get into a little flame war over it otherwise.

Have the last word if you want. I suppose you've earned it.

Change - 2013-05-15

"You can have the last word" has got to be the single greatest expression of impotence on the internet.

Crab Mentality - 2013-05-15

I'll take the last word and agree with GovtCensor. Using the homeless as props and a deterrent is despicable, easily nullifying whatever point he had about A&F treating people unfairly.

spikestoyiu - 2013-05-15

I would argue "u mad" is the single greatest expression of impotence on the internet.

sosage - 2013-05-15

Except you would be wrong. It is definitely "you can have the last word".

...if I don't reply any further, it isn't because I am letting you have the last word.

GovtCensor - 2013-05-15

I would actually agree with sosage. At least with "u mad" you can pretend you're just trolling and have achieved your goals. I am actually impotent in this situation, no point in denying it.

Oscar Wildcat - 2013-05-15

Ask your doctor if Cialis(tm) is right for you.

Old People - 2013-05-16

Stop being mean to each other and watch some videos.

baleen - 2013-05-22

I think people donating A&F clothes to homeless shelters is a pretty good idea. Ever been to one? They really need clothes, especially clean shirts, sweatpants, sweatshirts, socks and underpants. This is amateurish but that's okay, because this man is an amateur and he's doing it all by himself, bless his heart.

I look forward to a massive gallery of A&F being worn by poor folks. I also look forward to douchey/sorority idiots throwing all their A&F clothes away in disgust, where it will be picked up by said poor folks. Only good can come of this.

EvilHomer - 2013-05-15

Oh God, the poor homeless.

Please don't do this to them. They deserve better.

SolRo - 2013-05-15

Does AF actually make any durable or warm clothing? I get the impression it's all for going from one climate controlled area to another and then dry cleaning after wearing once.

B. Weed - 2013-05-15

From 1892-1977 they made sportswear and hunting gear.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2013-05-16

The transition to douchewear was not an easy one but they sailed through with douchey colors.

bopeton - 2013-05-15

I approve of A&F's attitude toward fat people. I approve of douchebag-on-douchebag violence. I approve of confused homeless people on Skid Row.

Five stars.

I'd still be alive if I had one wish.

EvilHomer - 2013-05-15

Also, fedex- yes, I'm pretty sure the CEO said those things. I can't confirm any of the quotes, but A&F has had a long and well documented history of being run by a pack of asshats. This is totally the sort of thing they would do. Back when I was in college, for example, one of our student groups launched a series of protests when it came to light that A&F refused to hire minorities - even hot ones - because darky doesn't fit their brand image. They're a middle-brow fashion company whose market niche has always revolved around selling dumb, lower middle class wannabe-preppies a little taste of gated-community exclusivity. You know, the sort of kids who are too poor to shop at Banana Republic, but too arrogant to go to Marshalls like everyone else. Frankly, the only thing that shocks me about all this is that A&F didn't say they'd burn their clothes *with the poor people still wearing them*.

I did like their Ching-Chong Chinamen shirts, though. Those were kinda funny!

GovtCensor - 2013-05-15

Wasn't there a class-action thing where every non-white employee that ever worked for them got money? They were hiring minorities to say that they did and then sticking them in stockrooms and neglecting to promote them, of course.

chumbucket - 2013-05-15

I'm all for giving the finger to A&F and their loud obnoxious AXE smelling stores but this is just a dumb attempt at what should be charity but is actually a stunt to see how many homeless folks end up in A&F clothes like some army of the disenfranchised douches.

The Mothership - 2013-05-15

When I was at UW in the late 90s I remember there was an editorial cartoon in the Daily where a frat boy was welcoming a new pledge saying "welcome to Sigma Kai, here's your Dave Matthews' Band CD and your Abercrombie gear". It was sooooo true too, that shit was a uniform.

fedex - 2013-05-15

"looks like Gary Busey got hit by a truck driven by Mickey Rourke high on paint thinner."

I loved that movie!

Nominal - 2013-05-15

The only funny thing Maddox has ever done is saying that, despite over half the members being black, Dave Matthews band is still the whitest band ever.

Mother_Puncher - 2013-05-15

The CEO of Abercrombie also used the phrase "totally vanilla" in an interview and looks like Gary Busey got hit by a truck driven by Mickey Rourke high on paint thinner.

I don't care what anyone says. This is a cool idea. It helps out homeless people and pisses of A&F.

Blue - 2013-05-15

It's like the crossed the bumfights guy with somebody that really hates A&F!

Gmork - 2013-05-15

You guys are missing the point. People who normally annoy you with facebook posts are going to be spending their time and effort to give clothes to homeless people just so they can pictures and videos of the handoffs and then post it on facebook.

Facebook. Actually inspired homeless people to receive fresh clean clothes. Fuck the brand, and fuck the people trying to give the finger to the brand, the end result is normally selfish people are going to be giving (relatively) nice clothes to homeless people. Who cares about the back and forth between A&F and the facebook carebear community?

People are giving clothes to homeless people, even if under selfish pretenses. I'd call that a positive thing.

fedex - 2013-05-15

and not just any clothes!

GovtCensor - 2013-05-16

Well, I guess I do agree with you. While I see no evidence that the guy in the video had any real intention to help the homeless, it appears to be becoming a bit of a thing and might have good results. I don't think it's a good idea for giggly kids wandering the streets looking for homeless people to take pictures with just so they can have a laugh. Are they going to make them dress up and pose with them? For one thing... I mean, frankly, some people are homeless for a good reason, and it's because they are nuts or addicts or whatever. Exercise caution.

I mean for goodness sake, why not just volunteer to help the homeless, with a proper organization? I do, regularly. They needed help yesterday and they'll need help tomorrow. THIS is what it takes to get people to care about something real? This dumb crap? The stupid clothes that people you dislike are wearing? This is playground level resentment. I mean, I thought KONY 2012 was a bit on the smug side, but at least that was a real problem. I don't throw "first world problems" around lightly but this does seem to qualify.

I predict this'll be utterly forgotten by this time next month, faster if the CEO issues an apology that no one'll believe but will provide an excuse to return to normal. The video guy won't even have to jack off in public to accomplish his return to obscurity. But if one person learns something about the homeless from it, then fine, it's entirely worth it. And doubly so if some homeless people get some clothes they like... if they can fit into them, because fucking hell, who the hell can?

Old_Zircon - 2013-05-16

Being "nuts" or an addict are not "good reasons to be homeless."

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2013-05-16

All my stars go to the Biff Tannen reference.

Old_Zircon - 2013-05-16

it's not really related but yesterday I saw a Facebook thread about "food shaming" i.e. people telling other people that their meals are unhealthy being a form of discrimination. One of the responders said that her coworker criticizing her choice of meals is so bad that having that coworker even look at her is "triggering."

It must be nice to have lived such an easy life that having someone make a snotty remark about your junk food consumption qualifies as a traumatic experience.
