Always fascinated by DID cases. Have a hard time simply writing them off as "attention seeking" since these kinds of manias can grip entire cultures. Case in point, "koro" in Southeast Asian and island communities. For some reason I am recalling a story my brother told me when he was performing search & seizure operations in the Basra Delta during the Iraq War. Normally a very level-headed, gentle kind of guy, he remembers spotting a unreported fishing boat in the sight of his 50mm. He says he was immediately flooded with what seemed like a different person: paranoid, racist, completely aggro. He checked with the captain to see if he should open fire, and genuinely wanted to. Generally he was the guy who convinced his underlings to calm down, to treat the allies with respect and compassion.
Is this DID? It's not him, it's a coping mechanism lurking inside of him, so why is it so hard to believe that this kind of thing might be as common as Tourettes in some form or other.
The human brain is a weird thing.

I've seen DID in clinical settings present itself as a symptom of PTSD. Interesting to watch to see what her trigger may be.

Today I learned that documentaries of this sort have comments rife with people saying "THIS IS PROOF THAT DEMONS EXIST. REPENT, SINNERS!"

kingarthur - 2013-04-05 When I was doing my internship for my PsyD. the mental hospital allowed clergy members with an accompanying parent or spouse of the patient to visit, so you'd get things like the patients' pastors or youth ministers or church community service groups coming by. Highlights of these experiences include:
The woman who decided to perform an exorcism of her daughter in a family therapy session and who, with the help or her even nuttier pastor, succeeded in not only scaring the patient, but anointing the entire room and everyone in it with oil via a spritzer, unprovoked and spontaneously.
The religious mime performance art guy that one church group brought with them who did a Christian-themed mime performance for the patients.
The singing church choir who absolutely would not cross the yellow line behind the in zone of the basketball court lest they catch a mental illness or worse, touch someone who was a patient.

Jury is still out on this, isn't it? I'd definitely call it an artifact of trauma if it's not sheer malingering. I just find it hard to believe that we could possibly form entire separate identities that fast or that well.

Wasn't multiple personality disorder a myth from the beginning only touted by nonprofessionals and lunatics? I though this was settled in the 80's.

Paracelsus - 2013-04-05 My 2 cents? DID does not mean that you have seven different people living inside you. I think that's what's doubted.
But if you interpret a 'personality' to be a 'stable and reliable means of functioning socially', then I don't doubt that someone horrendously traumatised might look as if they have seven personalities.
But it's not seven people, it's seven masks and none of them fit. Or ever will fit. I don't know, just a theory.
