I just got laid off today. Student enrollment is down and someone had to get the axe as they reduce classes and staff costs. I said goodbye to my students, my co-workers and even cried when my bosses handed me my last paycheck.

But THIS video is the worst thing to happen to me today.

fedex - 2013-03-28

welcome to my world, throw in a divorce and not only getting laid off, but your company going chapter 11 and all your friends getting laid off too.

Cube - 2013-03-28

I was unemployed to begin with.

jangbones - 2013-03-28

does anyone on poetv have a steady job?

poorwill - 2013-03-28

I have a steady job. They recently fired and replaced everybody but me because I was so good, and gave me a pay rise/promotion. Unfortunately, it's a job that makes me desperately unhappy.

poorwill - 2013-03-28

Sorry to hear that though Aelric, fedex.

Old_Zircon - 2013-03-28

I've been working various combinations of freelance, part time and under-the-table jobs for going on 8 years now. If you can manage it, the flexibility and variety help offset the lack of security and benefits, mostly. An like it or not, it's the way things are headed unless there are some drastic legal measures put in place to protect workers.

Sorry to hear you guys got laid off, it's a shitty feeling.

Old_Zircon - 2013-03-28

also the people responsible for this video should be put in jail.

Crab Mentality - 2013-03-29

Support- Poejobs.com doesn't seem to be owned. I know if I was looking for applicants, Poetv users would be highly considered.

If any of you are in/near Dallas, I might have a temp job in the future.

Aelric - 2013-03-29

Nope, I'm in California, soon to go back to Asia most likely because while teaching English is a dead end over there, at least it's sustainable.

My mistake may have been moving to the Bay Area. I could bounce back much easier if it if the rent wasn't so damn high.

StanleyPain - 2013-03-29

Sorry to hear everyone's job woes. My job kinda sucks as well, but it's one of those things where the company is so awful that everyone has quit so basically I have pretty good job security as I am left behind (with a healthy dose of apathy to keep me afloat).

The Mothership - 2013-03-29

I'm in academe as well and my job, ends in June. but I have had it for the last 2 1/2 years. sorry to hear, Aelric. do you have a phd and can you teach technical writing? if so I know a university that might want to hire you on the west coast.

Aelric - 2013-03-29

I have a BA in English and have only taught ESL/EFL. I was working at a language school for K-1 exchange students, basically the first stage before they go to real college, preparing them to take classes in English. It's the career I fell into when I went off to Korea and it's all I'm qualified to do now. I'm the the catch 22 of being an experienced teacher without the right education/credentials for real teaching unless I return to Asia, which is what my plan is now anyway. Hopefully, when I return to the states again, I'll be better prepared and choose a place with opportunity without the cost of living this place had.

Story of my life, spilling my guts on a Hong Kong Phooey clip.

fedex - 2013-03-29

I just got another gig (also in LA) but things have definitely been better.

Also, the road to hell is paved with lawyers.

Nikon - 2013-03-29

I've got work but it doesn't pay much. Eventually I'll go back to Asia to teach.

EvilHomer - 2013-03-29

Steady jobs would just get in the way of our poeTV watching. :(

I know a couple prep schools out on the East Coast that are looking for new blood, but you'd probably have to lie and tell them you're a math teacher.

EvilHomer - 2013-03-29

There's always the Army, too. They're always hiring. The pay's kinda crap, but with a BA you can go in as an officer and skip a lot of the bullshit everyone else has to put up with.

You used to teach English in China, right? If you're lucky, they might even let you kill some of your former students!

Nikon - 2013-03-29

>EvilHomer

No, I was in Japan. It's an option, but I wouldn't want to take a job where I might have to kill somebody.

TeenerTot - 2013-03-29

Sorry to hear about the layoffs. I've been freelancing since 2007. So far this year's been real bad. At this point, I'm waiting for my savings to run out and see what happens then.
But yeah, I've plenty of time for PoETV.

And these clips suck ass.

kingarthur - 2013-03-29

This clip sucks. My advice is never move to Mississippi. I moved back here just before Katrina to do my internship placement for my PsyD. It was cheaper living at home to do it than trying to live in northern Arizona and working a full time unpaid internship. Needless to say, the storm hit, I got stuck helping my parents who lost everything, I had to drop out of school and here I am, in my 30s and having to live at home with student loan debt. I got my first steady job since then that wasn't freelance statistics or the Census two years ago, but I'm very low paid and work the graveyard shift five nights a week on a McJob where I basically get the thrill of sitting around doing nothing for hours on end but occasionally get to drive a bridge when a boat needs an opening. On the plus side of that, my job does reimburse me for pursuing my MBA, though the checks always come just late enough to rack up late fees with my university.

The silver lining? I have the most wonderful and amazing girlfriend in the world. :)

StanleyPain - 2013-03-28

sweet christ why.....

why.....

themilkshark - 2013-03-29

Hong Kong Phooey is the Shrek Donkey in the body of a mongrel that eats garbage. Not only is it vomit inducing, it's brash and annoying too.

Marvin the Martian is just an ugly pile of suck, written to appeal to asshole children of executives and dusting off 60 year old jokes like they're brand new with a testicle joke tossed in for hipness... 15 years ago.

Wander - 2013-03-29

THEIR CHILD'S CARTOON IS DRINKING PISS

HE IS DRINKING MY PISS

HONK GONG FOOEY IS DRINKING MY PISS

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-03-29

This will make billions in Japan.

Nikon - 2013-03-30

Hong Kong Phooey isn't always a superhero. During the day he works as a janitor at a police station, so toilets and urinals are likely things he has seen before.

Nikon - 2013-03-29

01:09 in and I can't stand to watch another second. This thing looks horrible and is made of fabulous anti-humor.

Nikon - 2013-03-29

I tried to brave the second clip. After I heard the bratling prattle on about an xbox I immediately thought of this: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=The%20American%20Ki d

The second clip is still awful and offensive to the senses, but in a different way.

themilkshark - 2013-03-29

It's like Warner Bros. wants to shame you for ever liking Marvin the Martian. Lots of people like him, I hear... For some reason... Definitely can't tell why from that clip.

Nikon - 2013-03-29

I may have liked him at one point, but that clip traveled back in time and retconned my like for the character.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2013-03-29

I just heard a few weeks ago that Hong Kong Phooey was being made into a CGI/Live action hybrid film, much like The Smurfs, by the same group of people responsible for The Smurfs. I immediately thought "Dear God, Hong Kong Phooey? What on earth could a feature Hong Kong Phooey film be like? Like, what would even posses you to want to do that?"

...and then I hit play and heard Eddie Murphy in two minutes of toilet jokes. And the worst part of it all? Video game cutscenes from ten years ago have more impressive CGI work.

Ah well, it's nice to know that Marvin the Martian abomination has been shelved.

Maru - 2013-03-29

Another one of my perfect five videos :)

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-03-29

These were the trailers that, in old Warner cartoons, would end with a shot of an empty test theater, with a furious studio exec sitting in the front row.

Bort - 2013-03-30

Well this is shit all around.

When I was growing up, the Martian didn't have a name; he was just that weird little Martian. Giving him a name, much less naming him "Marvin", makes him a little less alien, and that's a mistake. But not as much of a mistake as, say, teaming him up with an Earth teenager so he can learn valuable life lessons (it's inevitable).
