Your white privilege don't work downtown, homeboy. Take his advice and get on the bike and go. They laid it out for you real simple: the security guard is not a cop. In fact, the security guy may be in on it.

....And now biking white guy is gonna threaten to buy a gun. He's clearly not walking away with the moral of this story.

Jericho - 2013-03-24

so the moral of the story is to be submissive as possible. very good

Bort - 2013-03-24

If there is a moral to the story, it's that being in the right won't necessarily save you from getting your ass kicked. This guy got lucky, especially considering he was the one to risk escalating it with physical contact.

A new lock is cheaper than a hospital bill. You've managed to stop the guy from taking your bike, you have the opportunity to leave with your bike, consider that all the victory you're likely to get.

Instead, he's going to get a gun. And, I'll wager, ride his bike in a fashion that irritates drivers.

kingarthur - 2013-03-24

Bort gets it. Gah! What'd I just say?

Bort - 2013-03-24

There's a site I like, nononsenseselfdefense.com. The site has a lot of advice (I figure it's good advice but I can't really evaluate) on how to keep from getting your ass kicked; they're real big on avoidance rather than assuming you'll be able to handle yourself in a fight with a stranger who is quite possibly more experienced with violence than you are. One thing that sticks with me is, when the other guy says something like "shut up or I'm going to kick your ass", he has explicitly given you a choice and is letting you pick which you prefer.

So in this video, the bike thief has already threatened violence, and the guy responded a little later by shoving the bike thief. Apparently, guy didn't really believe that an ass-beating was on the table. The only reason the guy walked away intact was because there were other people around and the bike thief knew they could be trouble.

Guy should have just taken his bike and left, rather than continuing to engage.

Bort - 2013-03-24

And unrelated, but I just smacked into a video involving a bike thief. Since 73q is still down, I link here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufSGGaON40I

Old_Zircon - 2013-03-24

He didn't say he was going to get a gun, the other guy said something to the effect of "if you keep touching people like that sooner or later you'' touch the wrong person and get shot" and he's referring back to that - "is that how it is? You have to buy a gun and shoot anyone who touches you? blah blah blah I'm not telling I'm asking." So it wasn't a thread, just a stupid thing to say.

At least that's what I heard.

baleen - 2013-03-24

I am very surprised this man is still walking. What fucking planet is he on.

duck&cover - 2013-03-24

He has the guy's face and voice on video, why doesn't he call the cops and show that to them. It's clear no one gives a shit at the mall.

FABIO - 2013-03-24

They've got four more detectives working on the case. They got them working in shifts!

duck&cover - 2013-03-24

Yes, I know the cops don't give a shit either, but maybe the owner of the bike wants to at least go through the motions.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-03-24

Employees are told to not resist/touch people because of liability and the fact that insurance covers theft. A friend of mine who worked at Old Navy said their policy was basically to let people walk out of the store with whatever they stole.

Now, this lead to some amusing posts on their social media from barely-literates going on about how Old Navy was "full of haters" because they wouldn't accept returns without a receipt.

Normal citizens do nothing because they fear getting sued, injured, acting on misjudgements, or all three.

Mister Yuck - 2013-03-24

On the one hand, if I caught someone trying to steal my bike I'm not sure I would have handled it any better, on the other hand if I handled catching someone stealing my bike that poorly I wouldn't put the video on YouTube.

On the third hand, fuck all mall cops, LP guys, and other retail security. They're only purpose is to frighten teenagers and lean on employees over stupid shit.

simon666 - 2013-03-24

Ten years ago when I was working as a bike messenger I repoed two stolen bike messenger bikes on two occasions (when messenger bikes are stolen there is a sort of APB that goes out and I found bikes twice). Unfortunately, there is no reasoning. You just have to roll up hard, be dominant, and basically take the bike back. If you're not willing to take a principled stand on the concept of private property you shouldn't even bother a thief.

sjohnson301 - 2013-03-24

The bike messenger community can be assholes, but at least they do back one another up when a bike is stolen. Not to mention you have to appreciate the high socks worn Lou Gehrig style.

simon666 - 2013-03-24

Lots of people can be assholes, but if you mean bike messenger communities are often insular and wary of outsiders, that's for fucking sure.

themilkshark - 2013-03-24

This is the type of man who needs religion to keep US safe from HIM. He's ready to shoot people over the thought of his poorly secured bicycle being stolen. People are generally out of touch. They think that security guards are like the characters in movies who are training to be a real cop and are on standby to be the hero of the day. They're not, they're usually lazy arrogant men who get off on wearing a badge and wielding a flashlight.

We live in Gunland. It's easier to get a gun than it is to overcome racist instincts.

sosage - 2013-03-24

"You think it's one way, but it's the other way"

sjohnson301 - 2013-03-24

This video was made by a man who has never had anything stolen from him in his life. If you've been robbed before you know the best thing you can hope for is to get your stuff back. Pushing the envelope here clearly won't help anything. Count your blessings and GTFO.

badideasinaction - 2013-03-24

The guy getting robbed clearly doesn't understand that he (I assume) either has to find a new place to go, or he really shouldn't be pulling that shit if he wants to keep using that mall. Keep the video in case dude makes it a vendetta and walk the fuck away with your bike. Report it when you get home if you really want to risk his friends kicking the shit out of you later I guess.

I live in a neighbourhood which is overall good, but has some more rough areas nearby. When people are pulling some questionable shit in the school behind me friends ask why I don't call the cops, and my answer is "dude, they'd know where I live, and I'm gone for work five days a week. You really think a bullshit fine or a stern talking to from a cop is going to balance what they can do to my house?" If they were breaking in somewhere or somebody was getting hurt, sure, because that doesn't need my word to a cop or a court, but noise complaints and stuff ain't worth the risk.

What is right and what is smart are two different things. Don't shit or start shit where you eat.

Binro the Heretic - 2013-03-24

Skinny little prick acting like he's all gangsta. If he was, he'd be off doing real gangsta shit instead of being a little sneak-thief bitch.

Fuck a thief and fuck everyone who helped him. I hope he turns around and steals from them.

Adham Nu'man - 2013-03-25

Completely agree. Everyone here is making comments that basically translate into "oh he should be grateful to not be in the hospital because the scary black man didn't beat his ass".

Sure, the squirrely voice of the protagonist doesn't make him sound like an incredible pugilist, but we are talking about A SKINNY MOTHERFUCKING BICYCLE THIEF, not Denzel Washington in Training Day. If this guy was as tough as he pretends to be, he wouldn't be stealing bicycles at the Mall.

samstein - 2013-03-24

Needs a 'black people' tag. It is hilarious how all of your comments blame the victim, but then as Michael Savage would say, "liberalism is a mental disorder."

EvilHomer - 2013-03-24

It's not a mental disorder, you wombat. It's just all the pentup victim blaming we're not allowed to direct at women. Have to let it out somewhere.

FABIO - 2013-03-24

I'm always excited whenever we get a new talking points guy.

WAKE UP!

Gmork - 2019-03-24

wait, what the fuck?

EVILHOMER??? YOU'RE BACK!!

dairyqueenlatifah - 2013-03-24

I wasn't going to watch it...I knew it would piss me off, but I watched it anyway.

I don't know what pisses me off more; the asshole who started it all and got away scott free, the assholes who come to his aid against the victim, the worthless as fuck security guards who do nothing and blame the victim for daring to ask for help, or the retarded comments here on PoETV about how somehow the victim, who just got his property destroyed, almost got his bike stolen, got threatened with bodily harm, got no compensation for his destroyed property, and got not only ignored, but blamed for the incident, by the people hired to protect him, is at fault here.

I'm a liberal faggot, but god damnit if this doesn't make me want to side with the NRA.

Enjoy - 2013-03-24

Was this a Kids In the Hall sketch?

M-DEEM - 2013-03-24

PoeTV comments are amazing.

1. White privelage means you don't get to be upset when non-whites try to rob your shit.

2. If you go downtown and youre white, your property is fair game because, slavery n' civil rights n' shit. Tuck you tail between your legs and tell your story walkin', bitch.

3. We somehow know for a fact this guy would get his ass beaten if it came to blows. Because... I dunno he sounds all ehhhehehehehhehhhh.

4 Mentioning guns, even hypothetically means you want to buy one and kill kill kill.

5. It's acceptable to be threatened with violence if you're in a certain neighborhood.

blah blah blah

This guy is a thief (and a shitty one). He's clearly not starving. No real excuse here.

M-DEEM - 2013-03-24

shit i spelled some things wrong..

dairyqueenlatifah - 2013-03-24

There was a video posted here a year or two ago of a woman (who happened to be white) who had a camera in her house that streamed to her work computer, and it showed that two young guys, probably teenagers (who happened to be black) broke into her house and were collecting her video games and stuff to take off with it, but before they left the house the police got there and foiled their heist. The PoETV comments were choc full of people here saying the woman was a terrible evil bitch for calling the police and ruining those two young men's lives by giving them a record.

I don't think I've really been amazed by comments on PoETV since then.

memedumpster - 2013-03-24

I commented that the cat was in collusion.

M-DEEM - 2013-03-24

Glad I don't remember that one.

And god forbid you should expect a paid security guard to HELP MAINTAIN YOUR SECURITY.

Adham Nu'man - 2013-03-25

And yet the bo-news crowd thinks people here are not LIBERAL ENOUGH!

Gmork - 2019-03-24

is that what bo news is? somehow I thought it was "farther right than poetv" but I never spent much time there

memedumpster - 2013-03-24

The only way anyone would be scared of anyone in this video is if they're...

A. ) So racist you don't know that black people aren't all Mike Tyson.

B.) One of these people.

When he told the dude he was going to get beat up, I laughed out loud.

fatatty - 2013-03-24

Paul Blart would be ashamed of this performance.

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2013-04-12

You guys are tilting at enough windmills to power the entire eastern seaboard.

Gmork - 2019-03-24

Ahh, I was waiting for the indignant one starring coupled with the 'IM ABOVE ALL OF THIS BUT LET ME TAKE A SHIT RIGHT HERE ANYWAYS BECAUSE MINE SMELLS BETTER" routine.
