John Holmes Motherfucker - 2013-03-03

I read a contemporary review of this ages ago, and the only thing I can remember clearly are the words "poor Tennesee Williams".

I think this is the review you remember:

The title is explained somewhere, but I’m afraid my attention wandered as the picture flapped along and I’m not sure I got it straight... No matter — it is something ambitiously ambiguous and poetic, some sort of metaphysical popcorn to munch while Liz and Richard go about the really serious business of the movie — which is making a million apiece by, respectively, waddling and shambling through poor old Tennessee Williams’ self-satire... That title could not be more apt; it is precisely the sound of a bomb exploding.

Wow. Internet, you've done it again! Nicely done, Ducky! I think it was something I stumbled upon in an old Life Magazine.

That was the thing for the late-60's early-70's, all of these disasterous, poorly-considered big studio arthouse films attempting to tap into the zeitgeist, or the counterculture, or The New (fill in the blank) or something.

Wasn't this the movie John Waters said was his favorite train wreck?

"SHIT ON YOUR MOTHER!"

Greatest line in anything, ever.
