Cults are indistinguishable from first generation religions. If Crowley, Blatvatsky, or Hubbard had something promising to say to the masses (ie: reconciling oneself to the perceived injustices of the world, or offering consolations and solace of maternal figures like Guanyin or Mary) their cults might have made a smooth transition.
