I used to feel that way about Phil Collins, but years ago when I worked at a thrift store me and a friend who also worked there decided to do an experiment to see if we could learn to understand him. That meant eating around 30 times the recommended dose of ginseng (each) from the staff kitchen and playing In The Air Tonight on a continuous loop for 3 hours. It worked. Phil Collins kind of rules.

When I was in college, this girl in our circle of friends showed us these videos of really early Genesis concerts, when Peter Gabriel fronted the band.

The music wasn't my thing, but holy crap, Genesis used to be really weird. Like, "let's dress as disco samurai/geishas complete with triangular-shaped receding hairlines shaved onto our heads" weird.

If PhilCo had died in 1985 in a plane crash, nothing of value would've been lost really. That said, I still like every Genesis album except We Can't Dance (HORRIBLE) a lot and his first 3 solo albums. After that he just did more and more sappy, overproduced and uninspired poppy shit. The guy can write a great pop song and is a really good performer live. I saw him during the Genesis reunion tour and it was really entertaining.
But yes, I can see why people don't like him. You should pull up some early post-Gabriel Genesis, say 1976-1982 if you don't believe me that he WAS great though.

I think those stickers were especially designed for "rebels" like us, and we did exactly what they were hoping we would. I mean, if you're buying a Sonic Youth album, it's probably not a gift for your 10 year old nephew. That, or you're thinking of some other band.

This video has fired up my nostalgia as well. 1992 was the year my musical tastes broadened dramatically, with really only late night TV broadcasting on the Australian ABC as a source to find this stuff, as I grew up in a small country town.

With Carter, I had never heard another act so bouncy and yet so political, delivered thick with top tier puns dripping with sarcasm. I still haven't. For those unfamiliar with Carter USM, my personal favourite lyric is from "Shoppers Paradise".
