William Burns - 2013-02-07

Erasure and technotronic are pretty great.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-02-07

I'd never heard that Erasure song before.

And the more I look at her, Mariah Carey looks like she's an alien from Mass Effect.

spikestoyiu - 2013-02-07

Yes. I will actually add Joe Public because I have a soft spot for new jack swing.

chairsforcheap - 2013-02-07

the cure?

Old_Zircon - 2013-02-07

Counterpoint: The Cure in 1992.

chairsforcheap - 2013-02-07

I'm not having any of that shit

Miss Henson's 6th grade class - 2013-02-07

This beat is...this beat is...this beat is...embarrassingly dated!

Actually, though, that Sophie B. Hawkins song is pretty hawt.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-02-07

Erasure is my favorite band. Hands fucking down. Their most recent album was disappointing, but I love everything they've done otherwise (except maybe half of Wild!)

spikestoyiu - 2013-02-08

The drums in the Sophie B. Hawkins song are great.

Of course Technotronic is dated -- as is most of this shit -- but it was great for '92.

sjohnson301 - 2013-02-07

Bohemian Rhapsody came out in 1992? Huh.

jangbones - 2013-02-07

Wayne's World

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-02-07

They wrote it for that movie?

jangbones - 2013-02-07

that's how sad music was in 1992, one of the biggest songs of the year was over fifteen years old

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-02-07

Wayne's World took fifteen years to make?

William Burns - 2013-02-07

To make Wayne's World from scratch, you must first create Wayne's Universe.

garcet71283 - 2013-02-08

That's the creationist viewpoint. The alternative is you bring a bunch of SNL actors together, crush them under extreme pressure and heat and maybe, if all the actors are right, a universe might be born.

deadpan - 2013-02-07

A strange period in music history when the recording industry was mind-controlled by aliens who worshipped drum machines.

chairsforcheap - 2013-02-07

yeah, aren't you glad nobody in the pop industry uses those anymore?

deadpan - 2013-02-07

oh I didn't say it was over.

glasseye - 2013-02-07

Followed by a strange period in music history when the recording industry was mind-controlled by aliens who worshiped autotune.

themilkshark - 2013-02-07

In 1992 I was a child in Catholic school attending every roller skating party and deeply enjoying this kind of stuff.

Old_Zircon - 2013-02-07

I couldn't bring myself to enjoy most of this stuff until at least 15 years later.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2013-02-08

I was in junior high during the time these came out and I thought I hated all music because of this. I didn't really "get" other kids.

It wasn't until I was 15 that I discovered that there was a lot of good music prior to the 90s.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-02-07

As much as current radio sucks, I find it hard to fathom Bryan Adams, Richard Marx, and Phil Collins being played back-to-back without enduring some kind of aneurism.

American Standard - 2013-02-07

"November Rain" is the best karaoke song on Earth. Especially if you can get yourself a chorus for the second half.

Void 71 - 2013-02-07

I want a redo with bands from Earache, Roadrunner and Nuclear Blast.

Old_Zircon - 2013-02-07

I want Sperm Swamp to make this into a cover album.

ashtar. - 2013-02-07

I finally understand why Cobain killed himself.
Also, I keep hearing people talk about Phil Collins as if he's not completely fucking horrible. Please, keep that to yourself. It's disgusting and pathetic, like bringing up your clown fetish.

chairsforcheap - 2013-02-07

it's really no joke that the record industry helped kill cobain (along with countless other brilliant musicians)... I was going to write something like this on that video posted recently because courtney love, i guess, did something, but it became overrun by some of the tiredest arguements i've ever heard on this site

Old_Zircon - 2013-02-07

I used to feel that way about Phil Collins, but years ago when I worked at a thrift store me and a friend who also worked there decided to do an experiment to see if we could learn to understand him. That meant eating around 30 times the recommended dose of ginseng (each) from the staff kitchen and playing In The Air Tonight on a continuous loop for 3 hours. It worked. Phil Collins kind of rules.

chairsforcheap - 2013-02-07

so, you took the opposite of a good drug in order to enjoy the opposite of a good recording artist? I can't shit on you because you've blown me away by the audacity of the whole thing

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-02-07

The music of Phil Collins only makes sense when you're stupid and in love at the same time.

jangbones - 2013-02-07

actually, once I was driving and a truck tire exploded next to my car, and chunks of metal tore into my skull and ninety percent of my brain was blown clear out of my head, and at that moment I was like "hey, Phil Collins is pretty good"

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-02-07

When I was in college, this girl in our circle of friends showed us these videos of really early Genesis concerts, when Peter Gabriel fronted the band.

The music wasn't my thing, but holy crap, Genesis used to be really weird. Like, "let's dress as disco samurai/geishas complete with triangular-shaped receding hairlines shaved onto our heads" weird.

sosage - 2013-02-07

...but Caminante that IS love. It's made out of Phil Collins and stupid.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-02-07

If PhilCo had died in 1985 in a plane crash, nothing of value would've been lost really. That said, I still like every Genesis album except We Can't Dance (HORRIBLE) a lot and his first 3 solo albums. After that he just did more and more sappy, overproduced and uninspired poppy shit. The guy can write a great pop song and is a really good performer live. I saw him during the Genesis reunion tour and it was really entertaining.
But yes, I can see why people don't like him. You should pull up some early post-Gabriel Genesis, say 1976-1982 if you don't believe me that he WAS great though.

Seven Arts/H8 Red - 2013-02-07

Admittedly, I cried when I heard Mariah Carey's "I'll Be There" back in 1992.

Looking back, I think that was my reaction to sappy, overly-melismatic versions of decent Motown songs.

Change - 2013-02-07

It's kind of weird to think that my parents probably fucked to some of these songs.

MacGyver Style Bomb - 2013-02-07

Hearing "Can't Let Go" in poor quality makes me think of an empty multiplex theater between showings.

Dread Pirate Roberts - 2013-02-07

London Beat looks like a Key and Peele skit. No joke.

The Mothership - 2018-06-22

London Beat kicked ass!

kingarthur - 2013-02-07

A quick scan of my 1992 reveals L7's Bricks Are Heavy. That is all.

boner - 2013-02-07

My music library turned up "Television, The Drug of the Nation" by The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy.

jangbones - 2013-02-07

"Ferment" by Catherine Wheel is a really good album

The Cure's "Wish" is average overall but has a few brilliant songs

"Us" is one of Peter Gabriel's best

but God damn a lot of completely worthless albums came out in 92...even good artists released bad attempts

oswaldtheluckyrabbit - 2013-02-07

Alice in Chains' "Dirt"?

Faith No More's "Angel Dust"?

PJ Harvey's "Dry"?

Tom Waits' "Bone Machine"?

Jesus Lizard's "Liar"?

Pete Rock and CL Smooth's "Mecca and the Soul Brother"?

And, yes, Ween's "Pure Guava"? It's got "Hey Fat Boy (Asshole)" on it!

kamlem - 2013-02-07

Utah Saints - Something Good

Ride - Cool Your Boots

Carter U.S.M. - The Only Living Boy In New Cross

Frente! - Accidently Kelly St

Crowded House - Four Seasons in One Day

Breeders - Safari

Pavement - Here

Magnetic Fields - Candy

etc, etc

Oktay - 2013-02-07

I'm disappointed in all of you:

Sonic Youth - Dirty

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-02-07

Mine is a lot like kamlems with the Cure and others. Good choices!

kamlem - 2013-02-07

^^^ I agree 100%.

Do you have the Bob Flanagan "behind the CD" insert? Look it up (when you are not at work) if you haven't seen it.

kamlem - 2013-02-07

^^^ Referring to Sonic Youth's "Dirty" album.

Oktay - 2013-02-07

Yes, indeed! I made sure to get that one because it had the warning sticker.

kamlem - 2013-02-07

Me too! :P I didn't know who the person in the picture shoving a plush toy up his butt was until years later.

I wonder what percentage of people are actually *discouraged* from purchasing a CD with a warning sticker attached?

Oktay - 2013-02-07

I think those stickers were especially designed for "rebels" like us, and we did exactly what they were hoping we would. I mean, if you're buying a Sonic Youth album, it's probably not a gift for your 10 year old nephew. That, or you're thinking of some other band.

"Can you tell me which Sonic Youth album has Pass The Dutchie? I really like that song."

btw, you'll be happy to know that you made me re-rip all my Carter USM cds, because it turns out I ripped them at 256K when disk space was short.

kamlem - 2013-02-08

This video has fired up my nostalgia as well. 1992 was the year my musical tastes broadened dramatically, with really only late night TV broadcasting on the Australian ABC as a source to find this stuff, as I grew up in a small country town.

With Carter, I had never heard another act so bouncy and yet so political, delivered thick with top tier puns dripping with sarcasm. I still haven't. For those unfamiliar with Carter USM, my personal favourite lyric is from "Shoppers Paradise".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4NooXXUXHQ

"Babies bottles full of the milk of human kindness.
CHORUS
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls"

Running together "Kindness" and "Ladies" makes it sound a lot like "Nestlé"...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nestl%C3%A9_boycott#The_baby_milk _issue

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-02-08

Weird Al Yankovic - Off The Deep End

Kid Fenris - 2013-02-08

Curve's "Doppelganger" came out in 1992, and I still think it's their best album.

Also The Afghans Whigs' "Congregation."

Oktay - 2013-02-08

I am disappointed in myself too:

TMBG - Apollo 18
The Orb - U.F.Orb
Social Distortion - Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell

Oktay - 2013-02-08

kamlem, that's pretty much why I like them too, it's the "punk rock with drum machines" thing. Fun and vicious.

fedex - 2013-02-08

here's my 1992 songs

Dee-Lite - I.F.O

FSOL (Future Sound Of London) - Expander (this was and is a fucking amazing album as well BTW)

Gat Decor - Passion (another classic)

Meat Beat Manifesto - Edge of No Control (fuck this WAS a good year)

House Of Pain - Jump Around

Pop Will Eat Itself - Bulletproof (Adrian SHerwood Mix)

Neds Atomic Dustbin - Not Sleeping Around

fedex - 2013-02-08

oh, and Lemon Interrupt (underworld) - Bigmouth

memedumpster - 2013-02-07

No Vikings From Torah?

Fuck this list.

Aubrey McFate - 2013-02-07

I loved most of this list. I don't care if that's wrong.

Riskbreaker - 2013-02-07

Oh boy, November Rain, that is all there is to say. I heard that song enough times to melt my stereo. Now i can't hear it anymore.

robotkarateman - 2013-02-07

I made it as far as Sophie B. Hawkins and remembered that this was the era of Catwalk and The Heights and 90210.

And then I had to go outside for a good cry because I'd blocked out all of that horror.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-02-07

Yes, many of these are horrible. Even if I love Genesis, No Son of Mine is garbage. But others are some of my favorite songs. Wish is in my top 3 Cure albums and Chorus is my second favorite Erasure album (after I say, I say, I say). So, it wasn't a 'wasteland' really. Just get the fuck out of America and go to England.

Senator_Unger - 2013-02-07

I adore Mr. Big. That is all.

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-02-07

Oh god, Pre-Bush America feels like some kind of glossy dream.

robotkarateman - 2013-02-07

Or post-Bush as the case may be.

glasseye - 2013-02-08

Intra-Bush.

takewithfood - 2013-02-07

Tom Waits released Bone Machine in 1992.

James Woods - 2013-02-07

Everyone in this video looks like a lesbian.

Ocyrus - 2013-02-07

Damn! I wish I were back in 1992.

glasseye - 2013-02-08

Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, U2 before they went to shit...

Good times.

fedex - 2013-02-08

except for Nirvana, thats how I feel about 1987

Innocent Bystander - 2013-02-08

I love that song.

Enjoy - 2013-02-07

Richard Marx, Genesis, Erasure, The Cure, London Beat, Kd Lang, U2

fractured - 2013-02-07

It's funny how narcotic all these songs feel.
Shopping music.

PegLegPete - 2013-02-08

When Mariah Carey was good.
