Apparently cats REALLY HATE the sound and feel of landing on tin foil.

Now I really need to see if this works on my damn cat.

Let the testing of PoeTV's cats commence.

Old_Zircon - 2013-01-19

I always heard that but when I tried to implement it the cats didn't really mind.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-01-19

We once had a cat that was getting old and crapping just outside the litterbox. We put foil around the box, which forced the cat to use the litter or go elsewhere.

It worked for a while, though other age-related things caught up with it soon after.

Old_Zircon - 2013-01-20

My cats got used to it in a day or two and then had no qualms about walking all over it.

Oscar Wildcat - 2013-01-20

Yup. I just put down a square foot of the foil and placed the cat upon it, with no notable effect other than his puzzled expression that I have come to understand means "Am I getting any kibbles out of this?"

Best I can say is that he showed no tropism for the foil, unlike say a newspaper that I am reading which is the ultimate butt comforter by his estimation.

So, my younger cat Fiona is particularly bad about getting on the dining table and on a tall bookshelf, so I put tinfoil in top of both of them. (My older cat Werner seems to have been properly trained not to jump up on things by his previous owners. I really must ask them someday how they did it.)

So far, Fiona is still jumping on the dining table, but she gets weirded out by it and leaves after 30 seconds or so. She also steps VERY CAREFULLY and doesn't knock anything around like she usually does. When she jumps down she also does it much more carefully than usual.

Anyway, it's not the jumping on the table I mind so much as her knocking stuff off of it, and chewing on things that are on it. If I can at least stop her from doing that, I'll be much happier. I think she's also learned that getting on the table is what summons the laser dot.

Fiving even tho it lacks the obligatory slowmo replay. WTF internet, way to drop the ball.

The counter countered.

Excuse me, I have to go do some stuff in the kitchen.

Pillager - 2013-01-19

That....

was quite impressive.

kingarthur - 2013-01-20

As a side note, kitties hate scotch tape on their paws. Seriously, put double stick tape on your cat's paws and watch the fun.

Binro the Heretic - 2013-01-20

They don't like tape anywhere on them.

When I was a kid, a group of us were playing at a friend's house and he said "Hey, y'all, watch this!" He then pulled a six-inch piece of tape off a roll and carefully laid it across the tail of his dozing cat. He woke the cat up and it took the poor thing a few seconds to feel the foreign object at which point it snapped wide awake and freaked the fuck out.

The kid laughed along with the rest of us at first, but then the cat began leaping up onto shelves and furniture knocking over breakable things. We had even more laughs watching him try to catch the thing.

takewithfood - 2013-01-20

Can we open a kickstarter to buy these people a really good slow-motion camera?

will kenderdine - 2013-11-28

For us, the thick cellophane works way better than tin foil. We sprinkle "packing peanuts" (those styro foam things) on the table, then put sheets of cellophane over it, and all is done. The cat only had to jump onto it once to be totally terrified and never tried again (...as far as we know...).
