These games are legitimately fun and I was really happy that the voice actors came back over for the second one. I later found out that Toys For Bob (the developers) consists of at least two people who were part of the early Electronic Arts team in the 1980s who made quite a few of their awesome, early-years stuff like Archon, Mail Order Monsters, and BoulderDash.

Not to mention Star Control 2. You can see a lot of the design sensibility that went into the ships in Starcon in the Skylanders and the writing/general humour hints at it too.

SC2 is still my favorite video game.

Oh man. Such a great game. I remember feeling so accomplished bringing down those Ur-Quan Bastards!

"I'm going to an ice level accessible only by certain pokemon monsters? I'm gonna need to ask my parents to buy me one!"

Can you play these games without the toys?

StanleyPain - 2013-01-22

The game comes with the Portal and 3 figures and you can finish the whole game with those figures if you want. Getting 100% completion though (all the collectables and extra levels and such) requires you to have at least one figure of each of the 8 element types. The new game, Giants, comes with one Giant figure, but because the whole game is designed in such a way as to be winnable without Giants (in case you only have one and he dies while you're playing a level) you literally don't even need the Giants. All of the old figures (from Spyro's Adventure) work with the new game, though as you might imagine, playing it with leveled guys from the first game will make the game insanely easy.

I like how the ramp into the deadly war machine's head has railings. Safety first!

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-01-22

Railings which the villain didn't use.

That was decidedly not terrible, and with a Jaws reference to boot.

This game is a major racket. You don't HAVE to buy a lot of the figures, but you will do so unless you want to be subjected to constant pleading and begging. It's even worse if, like me, you're buying for more than one kid because the little figures have something built in that lets them "remember" all the stats and upgrades you earn for them..

So naturally, the older kid doesn't want his little brother playing with his figures and vice-versa. So I always getting two of each and they start at ten bucks a pop. Now they have these bigger figures that are fourteen dollars and smaller figures with built-in LED lighting effects that are twelve. And I can't even play the damned games because neither kid wants me using their dudes.

Since the PC and the Wii are both set up here in the den, I do get to hear them at it, though. I was surprised at how many big-name actors were in this thing. They really pulled out all the stops on the voice talent. Some, like Warburton and Horovitz were easy to spot right away. It took me a minute to recognize Takei through the distortion effect, though.

On the plus side, the expensive figures are sort of multifunctional, depending on how creative your kids are. The boys use them in their little building block towns and they even made a sort of board game for them with terrain pieces from my Heroscape collection.

I'm so glad I don't have kids yet.

Could you guys let me know when kids stop lusting after diabolically marketed toys, so I know when it's safe to have them?

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-01-24

Fuck games/movies/shows/cards/etc with tie-in toy lines.
