18:45--- 19:24 -- first non-batshit crazy thing he says.

Konversekid - 2013-01-11

Really? A lot of what he says isn't that crazy with the big exception of that NWO shit.

fourthguy - 2013-01-11

My thought as well. I'd been kinda laughing at him throughout this, but then he said that and I felt a pit form in my gut. War really sucks.

Void 71 - 2013-01-11

We're all somewhere on the anti-government spectrum by now so guys who are on the extreme end of it don't seem to crazy anymore.

Also, Chris Hedges should embrace his inner-Wobblie and start calling for a bloody working class revolution. You know he wants it regardless of the anti-violence disclaimer he attaches to his amazing rhetoric. When the revolutions starts, I'm declaring him the Minister of Propaganda.

fourthguy - 2013-01-11

I have mixed feelings about Hedges. I think he would be a lot better if he eased up on the melodrama a little.

Old_Zircon - 2013-01-11

He seemed very calm and rational in this. In general, I don't see melodrama so much as being (mostly) right but knowing that being (mostly) right doesn't really help.

Konversekid - 2013-01-11

Well Hedges, even though I know deep down would not have a problem with a violent revolution, knows that if one were to happen it would be the Anti-NWOs, right-wing nuts, racists and Christian fundies that would prevail. This is actually one of his biggest fears in the U.S., because it undoubtedly could turn into some terrible form of fascism really quickly.

Also, I think Hedges's time as a war correspondent, him being direct legal defender against the authoritarian progression of the U.S. government, and someone who very closely compares the dismantling of society in the U.S. and around the world to past civilizations, completely understands just how dire things are. Even if life goes on in most places, there are areas in the U.S. and Canada that have been ravished by corrupt business interests, and these areas only seem to be expanding.

Also, Zizek get's propaganda in my vision, especially since it would require choosing who is removed from the narrative.

Hedges I would put probably put in charge of the army, I know he's a fighter.

Heartbreaking.

The guy with the skull mask was arrested a few years ago for hoarding stolen and/or unregistered weapons, making threats on government officials, and raping a 7-year old girl. He was found not guilty for the weapons, but the rape thing didn't work out too well. He was put in jail (where he still is now, as far as I know), but claims, as you might expect, he's a targeted individual, etc. etc.

Baldy's going to get so laid.

jangbones - 2013-01-11

I have never heard so much vital, urgent discussion without a single instance of any associated facts

But not one fact or piece of hard evidence is included, its all vague threats and fantasy scenarios

These people are very passionate about ghosts and illusions, terrified of things that do not exist

Seriously, can anyone identify an actual thing these people are so upset about?

dairyqueenlatifah - 2013-01-11

Laws and taxes exist.

That's basically what they're upset about.

wackyakmed - 2013-01-11

That facts and cognitive framework to understand what is going wrong in our society aren't readily available, and I'd argue intentionally so. In it's place, you have what Freud called transference. The indescribable rage caused by exploitation, loss of social status not of their own making, and lack of control over ones' well-being get transferred to scapegoat groups.

memedumpster - 2013-01-11

From the point of view of someone from Appalachiastan, I would add that this transference is generational, and a virtual social status based on the acceptance of the transference has been established. There is also a genuinely tribal component, where every anecdote told within a family is unassailable truth while everyone secretly thinks they are the only one who lies in their anecdotes, giving them "the power" in the tribe. What you get from this are large families who sit around being dirt poor making up bullshit stories to enrage one another about their common scapegoat and one another. Anyone who succeeds in a way that removes them from the reality they grew up in either made it if they thank God, or betrayed everyone if they don't. They must maintain the same hatred for life. Love comes and goes, but hate must be cradle to grave here.

It's fucking amazing in a straight up Sir James Frazer way if you weren't born into it.

wackyakmed - 2013-01-12

Jesus memedumpster, I grew up in Appalachia too and never heard it summed up so well. It really is a distinct culture built on generations of resentment and vendettas. Not that it doesn't make sense if you look at the history of the place.

When I daydream about weird hypothetical futures, one of my favorites is this: 200 years in the future, the United States is on the verge of collapse as a unified political entity. It's completely fractured and disorganized, and large parts of the country have been ravaged by the effects of global warming. After a series of mismanaged territorial disputes, a hillbilly Genghis Khan leads his tribe of Appalachians on a whiskey-fueled sacking of Washington D.C., putting the nail in the coffin of an American Empire. It doesn't get much more just deserts than that.

memedumpster - 2013-01-11

F is for the freedom set aside for you and me!
A is for America, the land of liberty!
S is for the statesmen who stand up for us all!
C is for the craftsmen who built our biggest mall!
I is for intelligence we found in God's design!
S is for the soldiers who maintain Old Glory's Line!
T is for the triumph over all the universe!
S is for the the empire which will write the second verse!

10:09 - 10:19 - Deleted scene from the season 2 Breaking Bad DVD, where Hank asks Walter to infiltrate a possible domestic terrorism meeting. I think they kept it out of the show because of the Fort Hood shooting or something.
