Nintendo later remade this hot tranny mess of a video, only this time the whole thing was rendered on a Nintendo Gamecube. It was played as a tech demo at various trade shows before the Gamecube's release, which led to various magazines at the time incorrectly reporting that the system would launch with a Mario Party-style Pokemon title.

I thought the same thing about Paper Mario. That seems like a typically Japanese effect, is there a name for that style of animation?
I don't speak Japanese but this video is a better idea than a lot of what the anime threw at you to believe. My big complaint is there really was no menacing bad guy because Team Rocket was meant to be the comedy relief. They did reference the actual criminal organization but never got confronted by them and never changed protagonist or antagonist. Ash was meant to be like Red but turned out to be weak and stupid. Team Rocket is by far the weakest of the criminal organizations who were essentially just a type of mafia. Compare that to Team Magma and Team Aqua (eco terrorists who want to alter the world go better suit water/fire types), Team Galactic (criminal organization/occult fanatics searching for the legendary creator Pokemon so Cyrus could become a god) and Team Plasma (a group of idealists ran by Ghetsis using his brainwashed puppet son to make people release their Pokemon with the intention of being able to control the world easier).
