In engineering the SI system is by far superior. Using imperial invites arithmetic errors and confusion.

I'm way more about the Cult of the Supreme Being than I am about the Metric System, as far as French Revolution committee-based hamfisted solutions to a purely ideological quibble based problem go.

Glasseye, that makes sense to me, although on the other hand a lot of calculations aren't even necessary when you're working with imperial, a lot of that math is built into the system itself, particularly when you're scaling, dealing with measurements that are rationally related to one another, center finding or subdividing a surface. All of that stuff is pretty much instant, virtually math free and the results are always whole units of measurement up to the limits of your instruments' or tools' resolution.

They're both useful for different things.

Also that's all out the window when you get to larger units of measurement; everything above a yard is worthless and the yard itself is on shaky ground. Once you get to the foot and below it's all based on bifurcation and is extremely efficient for dealing with real world linear measurements. For what I do, I virtually never have to deal with volume, area, or anything longer than 24", so there's no contest.

I always thought that half of 10 is 5, but I guess it's some weird fraction instead.

accurately measuring a quarter centimeter with a ruler is hard because a ruler isn't for making small, accurate measurements, not because a centimeter is base 10.

though I can think of one trick off the top of my head...use a 0.5mm pencil to make a mark after 0.2cm or just before 0.3cm. Either way I doubt most wood working is that accurate no matter what measurement you use.
