"Hype" was an influential synthpop album and the album track here is much more polished, but personally I'm much more partial to the quietly beautiful demo version that was on the reissue of "Freq": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gddVnK6o1KI

All these years I thought Calvert was just some guy who played Lead Poet in Hawkwind, but he released several great solo albums before dying in 1988.

The grooviest song on is "We Like to be Frightened".

A novel went with the album, I don't know of anyone who has it or has read it though.

...This guy could be the greatest writer of lyrics in our time, at least in the sense that he brings some edumacated poetry skills to rock lyrics-- all easily using assonance, alliteration, and other ...uh.. "elements" I might not recognize or know words for.

I agree on that about the Freq version of "The Greenfly..."

Alastair Reynolds' "Revelation Space" series of sci-fi novels contains either an nod to this song or an eerie coincidence... the Greenflies, self-replicating terraforming robots that go rogue and gradually devour the universe. Gives me the shivers.
