The Mothership - 2012-11-12

I liked this better the first time I saw it; when it was the video intro to a Wing Commander game.

FABIO - 2012-11-12

I couldn't believe all the people saying it was the best written show on TV. Maybe if you grew up on nothing but Halo novels?

Fighters seemed so pointless in the new show when the capital ships could just warp on top of each other and start launching nukes. The whole point of strike craft is having a longer range.

memedumpster - 2012-11-12

That's a mean thing to say about Wing Commander, Heart of the Tiger curb stomps this.

SolRo - 2012-11-12

Yeah, but if you aren't stupid you wouldn't really want your main ships just nuking eachother point blank until one explodes.

memedumpster - 2012-11-12

SolRo, point blank nuking makes sense from the culture that didn't build planned obsolescence into their robot soldiers.

EvilHomer - 2012-11-12

Sweet Lords of Kobol, where to begin?

First off, the best written SHOW? I don't know anyone who would make that claim. The best written SCIENCE FICTION show? Most certainly. With apologies to Doctor Who, Series Five through Seven, but that's just how it is.

Second, you've CLEARLY overestimated the tactical utility of space based nuclear warheads. They're a serious threat, of course, but capital ships (both human and Cylon) have been built to withstand multiple nuclear strikes. More importantly, every capital ship comes armed with a sophisticated battery of point defense antimissile systems, rendering it virtually impossible to land a direct hit on a capital vessel without first overwhelming and neutralizing these batteries with smaller fighter craft- fighter craft which, I might add, operate mainly as screens, not strike craft, at least for the resource strapped human fleet. Add to this the limited supply of shipborne nuclear warheads and you can clearly see why fighters are still invaluable. And the idea of plotting a combat jump SO accurately so as to allow a capital vessel to take up position and unleash a nuclear broadside from very close ranges is so laughably absurd-laughably! That I am forced to laugh. Haha!

Thirdly, you're treating the show's capital ships as if they're concerned with nothing more than destroying other capital ships. This is a gross oversimplification of a very complex role. Battlestars serve as an operational centerpiece for fleet operations over multiple sectors - a role made even more central in light of the refugee fleet Galactica had to shepard. In fact, one might go so far as to say that it's not the capital ships, but the RAPTORS who are the stars of the fleet. Again, this is made all the more apparent because of the tactical and strategic concerns of an entire species on the run. Small, hard to detect scouts that can quickly and effectively launch multiple jumps ahead into uncharted territory, along with a small escort of fast, versatile fighters, saved the human fleet's collective asses on far more occassions than mere missiles did... as evidenced in numerous episodes, such as e102. NOT TO MENTION their abilities to deliver nuclear payloads from unexpected angles -e113- or the fact that without them, ship boarding and planetside operations would be utterly impossible- miniseries, e103, e105, e 106, the list could go on, but I believe I have made my point, sir.

Harumph! Next you'll be complaining about Starbuck's role in the series' ending! Harumph!

Meerkat - 2012-11-12

By "best written show on TV" I assume they meant at the time, which means it was better written than, say, Hoarders or CSI:Weepy Vagina Squad.

Hooker - 2012-11-12

Stars for EvilHomer, even though the reboot sucked pretty hard after the first season.

memedumpster - 2012-11-12

What's this? Evil Homer started a fire? Time to add some fuel!

Sci Fi Shows Better Written Than Battlestar Galactica (in no real order) :
1. Space Above and Beyond
2. Firefly
3. Star Trek Fan Films
4. Total Recall 2070
5. Caprica (which was boring but I liked it)
6. Exo Squad

EvilHomer - 2012-11-13

Oh! Oh!!!!

You can't bait me, meme. I know you're trolling. I would have believed the "frothing Whedonite" angle had you stuck to that (even I can admit that Firefly was watchable), but Caprica?!? Come on.

ExoSquad, though. You got me there. ExoSquad rocked.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-11-13

Nothing is better than Battlestar Galactica.

memedumpster - 2012-11-13

So long as you don't diss Space Above and Beyond. I don't recall Battlestar Nuglactica having Coolio's Pleasure Ship.

EvilHomer - 2012-11-12

I will watch every episode of this. And I will enjoy it unironically.

The rest of you can go to hell. So say we all.

Kabbage - 2012-11-12

Solidarity, my brother!

SolRo - 2012-11-12

I like what I see.

Screw the hipster garbage.

mouser - 2012-11-13

If only it can make us forget Caprica.

Bort - 2012-11-12

Blast Thickneck!

Oh wait, wrong movie.

memedumpster - 2012-11-12

Starbuck Sheetrock

takewithfood - 2012-11-12

Guess what? I got a fever, and the only prescription is more lens flares!

Meerkat - 2012-11-12

If Daggit isn't in this then it will suck.

memedumpster - 2012-11-12

Typical conversation in my social circle...

"You like old sci fi, you should check out Battlestar Galactica."
"NO FUCK NO FUCK YOU I WILL KILL YOU FOR EVEN..."
"NO, not the new one! The old one with unicorns, space mormons, and a coherent plot."
"Okay, that sounds cool."

SolRo - 2012-11-12

Do you then discuss fadoras and tweed jackets for 3 hours?

memedumpster - 2012-11-12

Alas, no, tweed is a dirty remake of better fabrics.

Hegemony Cricket - 2012-11-12

Exactly-that-guy-you’d-expect-to-be-a-jittery-intro-partner-to-the -main-character turns-and-says to unnecessarily-not-anything-like-a-young-Edward-James-Olmos-would-h ave-looked-like,“Why? Why’d a kid with contacts and amazing teeth decide to come die in space? By contacts, I mean your family and stuff--not that you’re totally wearing blue contacts.”

“I’m here to kill every toaster I can I can toast my kill at. Milk run, huh?”

“Definitely. Nothing could possibly happen on Mission 1.1. I mean, space shit is going to go down, but we’re totally going to live through it…well, I mean, I guess I’m fair-game. No one knows who I am, and I bet they already don’t want to hear me talk about my old space name for super awesome good dead partner. Yeah, I’m potential meat--that’ll be a twist, huh?“

“Nobody’s gonna die yet. Unless they do. I should have specified me. I won’t die.”

They stare out, perfectly stable, and not on a racing steel tray heading along an open shaft.

“You know what I’m thinking?”

“What?”

“How awesome it would be if we were zooming along on a questionable transport conveyor that looks like just a really horrible idea if you wanted to keep people alive.”

“The lights would be all up in the foreground.”

“Blurrrrs!”

----

I’m going to watch the whole damn thing and likely find my inner-child enjoying every predictably awful moment. SPACE BOOM GO CRASH! ZAP! DROOL! GO 1995 COMPOSITES!.

Also, that Escher-Efficient flight hanger bay thingy was awfully quiet for all the machines and people moving around in every dimension constantly.

What I'm ultimately saying is that drinking beer is fun.

hughmanatee - 2012-11-12

The comments have convinced me to watch it. And like it.

kingarthur - 2012-11-13

Sooooo, we're centering this around a character arc where we pretty much know everything that eventually happens to this character post age 50 or so? Is there something so interesting that could have happened to Adama prior to this? Hot man on man action with Saul Tigh?

they'reforyou - 2012-11-13

While I agree, something inside of me really enjoyed seeing the 1st gen Base Star descending on Caprica. Plus, simulation or no, the whole blowing the cockpit and firing at the Raider with a handgun was fun.
