If somebody other than George, say, somebody who actually knows how to write and direct, makes a new Star Wars movie, it might actually be a decent effort. I mean, nothing can be as bad as the prequels.

Blue - 2012-10-31

Yeah. I don't want to toot my own horn, but I did write fanfiction when I was a teenager and I at least bothered to read a FAQ on how to write fanfiction.

I don't know though. That Midi-chlorians thing is... hard to attribute to ignorance rather than malice.

Blue - 2012-10-31

Thank god the franchise will no longer be in the worst possible hands.

Cena_mark - 2012-10-31

Its like Family Services taking a child off the hands of an alcoholic meth-head who beats his children with an extension cord every night. Lets hope Disney makes a good foster parent.

chairsforcheap - 2012-10-31

they made relatively bold choices with pirates of the carribean... HOLY SHIT... Johnny Depp in star wars pls.

chairsforcheap - 2012-10-31

blue will assure me there are already 1000s of those slashfics on usenet

Oscar Wildcat - 2012-10-31

If Disney is the foster parent, it's gonna be a Jerry Sandusky kinda foster parent rather than a Ward Cleaver.

StanleyPain - 2012-10-31

Putting aside Star Wars jokes, it's kinda sad to think that Lucas, who was one of the definitive icons of independent cinema once upon a time, should end things with the whimper of partnering his own company with one of the largest, most-soulless media conglomerates ever to have existed.

Xenocide - 2012-10-31

Yes, because before, when Star Wars was under the banner of 20th Century Fox, it was in bed with a tiny, benevolent mom and pop outfit.

StanleyPain - 2012-10-31

Hopefully one day you'll realize what a tremendously fucking retarded thing that is you just said in an attempt to a cute little snarky reply, because that is class-a fucking retarded to a degree that is like....creationist level retarded.

memedumpster - 2012-10-31

I like the Ralph Bakshi story where he and Lucas both had to go beg the "indie market" for more money to finish their movies, and passed each other on the way in and out of the "indie culture."

Seven Arts/H8 Red - 2012-10-31

Fuck Star Wars. I want to see Disney do something with Maniac Mansion.

Sanest Man Alive - 2012-10-31

Pixar's rumored to be working on a flick based on the Day of the Dead. Likely a coincidence, but we can still hope for a big-screen treatment for Manny Calavera.

Xenocide - 2012-10-31

Stan, I know you're in mourning today because your beloved greenscreen tech demo movies are now in the hands of a different group of creatively bankrupt Hollywood suits than they were last week, so I'll give you a pass on the hysteria.

Lucas ran out of good ideas 20 years ago. Now there is at least the faint possibility that someone who still has an imagination will be put in charge of Star Wars. The only bad thing about this sale is that it didn't happen decades ago.

EvilHomer - 2012-11-01

Stars for H8 Red. At first I was going to make a snarky comment, but then I thought, wait a minute, that really COULD be a thing. Right? I mean, LucasArts still owns the rights to Maniac Mansion, right? And 8bit retro nostalgia is a small but active market, right?

Disney: I've got a modest amount of disposable income in my pocket, and I'd be more than happy to blow it all on Maniac Mansion crap. I don't care what it is or how bad it is, I will buy it anyway. Worst comes to worst, I'll buy it, then spend years bitching about how you ruined the series, like I did with Star Wars.

takewithfood - 2012-10-31

"We are absolutely going to make Star Wars movies, and we're in the midst of the really fun part of the process, which is, we're sitting down with a couple of writers and we're starting to discuss ideas and we're starting to talk about what those stories might be."

I'm definitely not an expert on film, but this approach to movie making has always seemed backwards to me, and I think it deserves a lot of blame for all the really awful sequels out there. Rather than starting with a good idea and working to make it come to life, they're starting with a sound financial investment and that's about as far as they've thought it through. They're making a three more Star Wars movies whether they're going to be any good or not, and with that attitude, I'm guessing not.

I know this isn't news, but it's weird to hear someone say it out loud as though it were a good thing.

Xenocide - 2012-10-31

Now that Disney officially owns every brand in the world, I'm looking forward to Kingdom Hearts III: Wolverine and Sephiroth Meet Chewbacca.

"I'm looking forward to being a fan." I really hope George goes to a con and cosplays as himself.

OxygenThief - 2012-10-31

Finally George can make the small independent films he has always wanted to make because he's all about the art, bro.

Kabbage - 2012-10-31

Literally anything that can be done to change Star Wars from where it is would be for the better.

Jet Bin Fever - 2012-10-31

I stopped caring about what happens to Star Wars about a decade ago.

Rudy - 2012-11-01

Me too. It's just a blur of Gungans and tentacle-heads and guys-that-sort-of-look-like-stormtroopers now.

Hooker - 2012-10-31

I love this news simply because I trust Disney to follow its wallet and releases the theatrical versions of the first three films. I don't give two shits about anything outside of the original movies, but having to see Hayden Christainsen mug around the end or dinosaurs waltzing around Tatooine is always really painful regardless of how much emotional attachment you have to the series.

BHWW - 2012-10-31

I can't see Lucas now without thinking of Brian Firenzi's take on him from those Special Edition 5 Second Films.

"That's right. Bring me all the pussy."

memedumpster - 2012-10-31

Please, God, let episode 7 bomb worse than any other piece of entertainment in human history. Please, Lord Jesus on High, let Star Wars be the absolute ruin of Disney.

Oh Adonai, El Shaddai, ateh gibo le olahm, erase this blighted franchise from Thine universe.

Please.

Please for fuck's sake, please.

James Woods - 2012-10-31

Amen.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-11-03

MAY THE FORCE BE AGAINST THEM

Rosebeekee - 2012-10-31

As long as the movies are live action and Disney hires Trisha Biggar to come back and do her thing I couldn't give two shits what they do with the franchise.

cognitivedissonance - 2012-10-31

"I'm looking forward to being a fan." Yeah, the one fan wandering Celebration demanding to know where the Jar Jar Binks panel is.

Toenails - 2012-10-31

You earned 'em.

Udderdude - 2012-10-31

I hope they make the new movies based on those awful expanded universe comics. That way I can laugh at it even harder.

Rosebeekee - 2012-11-01

Oh come on. A movie focusing on fashion designers from across the galaxy vying to make Luke Skywalker's girlfriend's wedding dress sounds like solid entertainment.

chumbucket - 2012-10-31

Didn't know dead horses could get sold for that kind of cash.

Udderdude - 2012-11-01

It's more like a zombie horse at this point.
