This sort of shit has been going on at colleges forever -- well before social media was ever a thing.

Yeah, I was going to say I went to college and my father's been a professor since the early 80s and I'm confident it was always this bad. although he's reported a pronounced increase in people who are painfully socially incompetent on all levels in the past 6 years or so.

I suppose that's the difference I'm noticing: the social incompetence. That, and they're just so visible now, thanks to the internet.

The term "hipster" is starting to encompass everyone nowadays. You have a mustache? HIPSTER. You ride a freaking bike? DOUBLE HIPSTER. You own a cable knit sweater that you wear occasionally? Too hipster for words.

'Nerd' isn't an insult anymore, so a new word had to come along and replace it.

Around these parts the term "hipster" has encompassed almost everything except for real hipsters (if that's even a real thing, the closest thing I can think of is the guys everyone called "mods" in New England ten years ago) for a very long time.

Yeah, I didn't watch the whole thing but I don't believe I saw any guys whose combination of emaciated body, spindly arms, flannel shirt and filthy beard make them look like an anorexic lumberjack.
