Well, I hate to say this, but I really want to hear the taped conversation that led to this.

Binro the Heretic - 2012-10-11

When I was a kid, one of our neighbors was screwing around on his wife. His wife went to his girlfriend's house and rang the bell. Her husband answered the door and, when he saw who it was, quickly shut the door and ran to the back of the house.

The wife threw open the front door and stormed into the living room. The girlfriend confronted her, screaming at her to get out while the wife kept shouting for the husband to come out. He ran out the back door shirtless and shoeless and jumped into his car. He had to drive across the front lawn to get out of the yard because his wife had parked her car directly behind his. He left big circular ruts where the tires tore up the grass. The wife jumped into her own car and pursued him. He sped along the roads, trying to shake her and failed.

He pulled up into his own driveway with her not far behind. She saw him jump out of his car and run around the back of their house. She pulled into the driveway, got out of her car and went into the house where she found him naked in the shower.

When she confronted him, he acted completely shocked, insisting that she had seen another guy that looked like him and that he had been home for more than an hour.

While she angrily stuffed her clothes and some other belongings into her car, he followed her back and forth, dripping wet and holding up his wet unbuttoned pants insisting she had not seen him at that woman's house. He kept proclaiming his innocence, becoming more and more emphatic even after she had pulled away.

Is there some psychological explanation for such idiocy?

No explanation needed, typical human behavior.

I mean, it's just crapshot denial that will maybe somehow work. Say it loud enough, insist it strong enough, and the other person MIGHT back down.

Also, may I ask if this is a story about your parents?

Binro the Heretic - 2012-10-12

No, this was a young married couple on our street. We all got to see the part where he was following her around the yard insisting she had NOT just seen him at the other woman's house. We found out the other details later.

I've seen plenty of instances where cheating guys have, through use of emphatic sincerity, convinced their partners nothing was awry when there was no actual evidence. This was the only time I saw a guy get caught outright and try to bald-face lie his way out of it.

When you give that explanation, you give that person the choice of believing you. If the truth is a lot worse than the lie, many people will choose the lie.

That's the reason scams can net so much money from people. If you have to admit being dumb enough to be scammed, well, most people can't do that. My grandmother never stopped believing that the mechanic that stole all her money was a good person that ran into a lot of improbable hardships.

I listened to a lot of those prank calls like the one where they got the fast food employees to go outside and strip and pee on each other. These pranks have a couple of techniques in common, but one of the things they almost invariably did at the very beginning of the call was to set off a fire suppression system or an alarm. See, if they told you "I'm going to need you to pull that cord and then there will be a huge mess" or "I'm going to need you to set off the fire alarm for a few minutes" you'd say no. You'd get your manager.

Pulling a switch to run a test of the fire alarm for the fire marshal on the phone doesn't make you an idiot. But you sure look like a fucking idiot when the alarm goes off. There is now a huge fucking mess in the kitchen and you are in a lot of trouble. Unless this guy really is a fire marshal. It's that little bit of hope that keeps people in the scam. That's why it gets worse the deeper into the scam you get. Would you really want to admit that you got duped into trashing your workplace and standing naked on a street corner? No? Then it looks like you're in a real emergency and the only way to prevent your coworker from getting severe chemical burns is to pee on her.

THA SUGAH RAIN - 2012-10-11

Which answers the question in the description.

Rafiki - 2012-10-11

God, even street gangs have become huge dorks and are leaving Derp tags.

Old_Zircon - 2012-10-11

This guy's no James.

kingarthur - 2012-10-12

Fuck you, American "journalism". Bicycle theft is not worth the attention. People are dying, money controls our politics. Again, heartily go fuck yourselves.

Blue - 2012-10-12

You clearly haven't seen that Pee Wee Herman movie or had your bike stolen.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2012-10-12

Oh, so they're still doing this shit, just not with desperate guys trying to fuck teenagers anymore?

How many more people need to die and public resources wasted before NBC figures out this shit is a bad idea?

Chancho - 2012-10-12

Getting pedophiles to commit suicide is awesome. More pedo harassment, less petty crime reporting.

I fully expected Chris Hansen would confront Gordon Jump in the back room.
