"I don't need you, I'll start my own school! With hookers! And blackjack!"

Xenocide - 2012-09-21

"I punished her because she didn't follow the rules."

"ARE YOU INSANE?!!!??"

So the teacher's supposed to be the good guy, right?

IrishWhiskey - 2012-09-21

"We're going to try something new. We're going to work a little harder."

Oh, that's what it takes to turn underfunded schools with developmentally challenged and abused/neglected kids into successes? Why didn't we think of it before!

"You know those mothers who lift one-ton trucks off their babies? They're nothing compared to me."

Hear that moms? The reason your child is struggling in school is because you don't love them enough to make the effort. It certainly has nothing to do with the fact that Maggie Gyllenhaal appears to be a poor single mom with tons of free time instead of three jobs.

Also, a baby under a one-ton weight is already dead. But then I'm sure Maggie's love will bring it back to life, unlike all those wuss moms whose kids stay dead because they didn't care enough.

Xenocide - 2012-09-21

THE SYSTEM CAN FAIL

BUT A PARENT CAN'T.

Real moms are infallible. If you ever screw up at any aspect of parenting, it's because you never really love your kid.

Charter schools are not the answer but neither is letting teacher's unions interfere with bad teachers being reprimanded, and outright fired. I remember reading about the MANY DOZENS of children abused by that fucking cunt in real life and how she completely avoided any legal repercussion. So yeah, I might be KIND OF upset and want her fired and get pissed off if the teacher's union stepped up and said oh no, you can't possibly fire her...she's with us. Because fuck them.

Waiting for Superman is another excellent film which illustrates the problems of protecting these shitheels. When they fuck up like this they aren't fired, they are just moved to another school because of the law. Fuck them and fuck anyone that protects them.

I'm not for charters. I'm for changing the tax system. Schools only get money based on the income of the people living in that given area, which in a democracy is ludicrous. If you change that system, I guarantee more fairness for our school system can be reached.

kingarthur - 2012-09-21

I agree with your solution. It'd force upper income neighborhoods to have some skin in the game.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-09-21

"Waiting for Superman" is another libertopian propaganda piece. It's just more subtle about it.

Here's a news flash: Unions want bad teachers gone as much as administrations do. The problem is that the administration won't even bother documenting bad behavior, which is what is needed to get rid of bad teachers. Them's the rules. No firing without just cause, and if you want to do that, there's some fucking paperwork. But the administration fuckheads find it easier to just call their local Fox affiliate and gripe about unions instead of actually following the procedures they agreed to.

Of course, nobody ever seems to call the administration on it when they violate teachers' contract, assign them loads of "optional" duties, etc. They're the ones demanding social promotion of failing students and giving patronage jobs to their pals, not the fucking unions.

The other thing that pisses me off is the whole "let's evaluate teachers based on student performance." There's never anything about assessing the student before they come into a classroom. The kid might be coming in three grade levels behind where they should be, the kid could be a defiant shit, and they're very probably not the only one since nobody seems to want to evaluate the parents in this equation. It's really telling that failing students are to be laid at the feet of teachers, but nobody's singing the praises of Steve Jobs' teachers. I mean, fair's fair, if the failures are their fault, the wild successes must be theirs as well, right?

StanleyPain - 2012-09-21

Waiting For Superman is bullshit. It was made by charter-loving propagandists and is riddled with factual errors not to mention an incredible anti-education bias. WFS is basically "Yeah, lots of schools are underfunded and have other problems, but uh...NEVERMIND THAT IT'S NOT IMPORTANT..here's this made-up bullshit doc about how rich people should be able to have other people pay for their kids to go to private schools because they hate society..."

kingarthur - 2012-09-22

Agreed, Waiting For Superman is a relentless downpour of shit rain and I should have pointed that out in my response.

Aernaroth2 - 2012-09-21

"You have to find a teacher that has the same ideas you do!"

Yeah, god forbid your kid be exposed to new ways of thinking.

Cherry Pop Culture - 2012-09-21

I went to a charter school from 7th to the middle of 11th grade. Parents had to volunteer at least 30 hours or else their kid would be put on academic probation. They could instead donate money, but that option stopped after a while. If you missed 10 days of school, you were expelled. I frequently missed 6 days a year because of sinus problems. The work load was ridiculous, I worked harder in one year in my geography class than I have in my community college in 3 semesters. It was project after project, and essay after essay. We only had a 10 minute break after 2nd period and a 40 minute lunch. That was supposed to be enough to last us kids from 8 AM to 2:50 PM if you were a middle schooler, or 8 AM to 3:50 PM if you were in high school.

She EXPLODES that man's chest at 1:37!! She must be very powerful as the pop song implies.

Ocyrus - 2012-09-21

Actually, it is charter schools that are more likely to lock your child in a closet, but this movie will pretend otherwise.
Either way, the best way to educate your child is to be educated yourself, and to send your children to elite private schools or to homeschool them.

frau_eva - 2012-09-21

Wasn't there a Judge Judy episode about a teacher at a private school locking a child in a closet?

According to Stanford University, charters on average perform either at public level or lower. Waiting for Superman is primarily about the Harlem Children's Zone schools, which had lots of expensive area-wide services that can start as soon as a child is born in that area. Practically every charter does not have this. Expecting the same results as the Harlem Children's Zone with a fraction of the support and money is ludicrous.

That and if unions are what is killing education, then the American South--where unions are weak to nonexistent in education--should have great schools, right?

STABFACE - 2012-09-21

The charter school thing is, like most things pimped heavily by Conservative mouthpieces, a giant scam designed to funnel money into the hands of cronies:

So five for evil.

chumbucket - 2012-09-21

This trailer is done in such a typical crescendo way that you almost half expect a "lock and load" section where one of them pumps a 12 gauge one-handed and you hear at least one "let's do this". But I guess that wouldn't be appropriate.

fatatty - 2012-09-21

To be fair, Pittsburgh does have really shitty schools.
