It's sad that almost all the big, deep, crate-digger stores are gone but I can't believe how many small, vinyl-only niche stores have opened in the past 2 years, and all of them seem to be thriving.

I hate how hard it is to find a good record store.

We're lucky in New England, there are still a ton of them. I can think of a half dozen that opened in the last three years in Boston and Providence alone (Somerville Grooves, Olympic, Analog Underground, the new Cambridge branch of Armageddon, Weirdo... OK 5), plus the older ones that are still hanging on. The new ones tend to be small but there are still a few that are comparable to the one in this film (In Your Ear in Allston, Cheapo, Mystery Train up in Gloucester, and a few places in the suburbs that I haven't been to yet).

Records are the only physical medium that's actually increasing in sales every year, they'll be around for a while yet. It is too bad so much of it has moved online, though, you just don't tend to learn about as much stuff on the Internet as you do in a large, old-style store. The Internet encourages people to listen to what they know, there's a lot less room for the happy accidents that happen at a real store.

Providence is able to support two stores less than two blocks from each other on one side of town and two more that are literally two doors away from each other on the other side.

I was in Portland Oregon earlier this summer and not only is Jackpot Records great, but there is another store (the name of which escapes me) that is almost an entire block long across the street from it. One of the biggest record stores I've seen anywhere, although they keep all the duplicates on the shelves, so the size is a little bit deceiving. Still, any non-specialty store that has a divider for Yahowah 13 is OK by me.

You can't go into a dirt mall, flea market, or Good Will in Kentucky without seeing a dozen records you wish you'd bought a turntable for so you could grab them up RIGHT NOW. Records everywhere here, of all kinds.

No stars--where's Molotov?

God, more New Yorkers insisting that shit is only important when it happens to them. Bleeker Bob's was an overpriced trap for NYU students from at least the early 90s, and, like Zircon said, vinyl-only stores are thriving in places where retail space isn't something like 0/square foot.

Yeah, I was going to say being in NYC seems like a huge liability for this sort of business.

To be honest, I'd say being in NYC seems like a huge liability for quality of life in general.

Oh, Kim's Video wasn't that good, either.

Can I get a shout out to Other Music? They use Spacemen 3's favorite font!

You'd think the Mona Lisa was sent through a shredder.
