MONTREAL (AP) — Police say a man fired a gun during a midnight victory rally for Quebec's new premier, killing one person and wounding another. The new premier, Pauline Marois of the separatist Parti Quebecois, was whisked off the stage and uninjured.

It was not clear if the gunman was trying to shoot Marois, whose party favors separation for the French-speaking province from Canada. Police identified the gunman only as a 50-year-old man. Police say he set a small fire behind the building before he was arrested.

Marois returned to the stage after the shooting and asked the crowd to peacefully disperse.

Police say they don't know the gunman's motive, but say the suspect, while being dragged toward the police cruiser, shouted in French, "The English are waking up!"

Not being Canadian and not understanding much about their politics, is it safe to say that the whole Quebecois thing is sort of the Northern version of Tea Party-esque sentiment? The few people I've known who lived in Canada always expressed a deep disdain for Quebec and talked about it like it was the "South" of Canada or something.

Wonko the Sane - 2012-09-05

The people you've talke to have been idiots. Quebec is by far the most left leaning of the provinces and the PQ may be the mist left leaning of Quebec's provincial parties.

There's much to be said for and against the seperation movement which many non-quebecois canadians fail to grasp, but the movement on the whole is on a decline. The pro-sovereignty party may have won the election, but with 32% of the popular vote that means that 68% of the provence voted federalist.

That's kinda what I thought given where I was hearing the opinions from.

Since the amalgamated right-wing Conservative-Reform-Alliance Party won a majority government about a year and a half ago, the tone of political discussion in Canada has become relatively shrill and right-wing. Their general platform of "National harmony through increased surveillance and incarceration" plays well with the stability-seeking baby boomers who make up a healthy chunk of the voting public right now.

The rise of Sun TV, a low-budget Fox News tabloid channel owned by Quebeccor Media (A media company that promotes populist separatism in Quebec and populist anglocentrism in the rest of Canada, because $$$), has added fuel to the fire by polarizing most issues and generally adopting the same "Libruls Bad" rhetoric heard across the border.

All of this does little to explain why this shooting occurred, so I look forward to hear more about this dude's motives. Overall, instead of reflecting on Canada's polarizing politics, I'm willing to bet that the right-wing spin that comes out of this incident is some wierd "You elect extremists into power, extreme things happen" soundbite that the boomers will eat up.

badideasinaction - 2012-09-05

Historically the PQ. Has been pretty left leaning, but the current incarnation also has the "assimilate or leave" mentality thrown in. And by that, they mean "be francophone, Christian and hopefully white or leave".

badideasinaction - 2012-09-05

Also, the right wing spin will be "this is why we need our politicians hidden from such dangerous events as talking to the press" and "this is why we need to beat all protestors because one of them could be gunning for Dear Leader".

Shanghai Tippytap - 2012-09-05

I agree, man. A lot of folks I know seem to love the socialist bent of the PQ, but tend to forget about the national- prefix.

Screwtape - 2012-09-05

Okay, I looked to the right, then the left of her head. I didn't see anything. Holding my stars until someone points it out for me.

The Great Hippo - 2012-09-05

:05 and :06. Very tiny, on the blue background, not very far to the right of her head at all.

Robin Kestrel - 2012-09-05

Had she been standing up straight, that hole looks like it would have been pretty much right between her eyes.

Change - 2012-09-05

If you go full screen, and wait until she's taken away, you can see the hole behind where she stood.

spikestoyiu - 2012-09-05

Holy shit.

Rosebeekee - 2012-09-05

At first I thought that was just a pixel. Fuck.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2012-09-05

Holy ass of Christ, I finally see it now. Is there a HD version of this on the YouTubes?

takewithfood - 2012-09-05

From the muffled sound and the lack of a reaction from the crowd, I'm guessing that the shot came from backstage?

Old_Zircon - 2012-09-05

I watched it half a dozen times before I read this, then watched it a few more times, and that STILL looks like a compression artifact to me, even knowing it's not. I actually saw it every time but I didn't think it was anything.

The Mothership - 2012-09-09

I'll be damned, that appears to be a hole in the curtain. A bullet sized hole.

memedumpster - 2012-09-05

North America, fuck yeah.

Jet Bin Fever - 2012-09-05

Oh come on Canada. You guys are supposed to be the responsible ones.

Change - 2012-09-05

Fuck that, they're ruled by the equivalent of Republicans who'd beg to be ruled under the British Monarchy.

Shanghai Tippytap - 2012-09-05

yeah its seriously gotten a bit fucked up here lately

FreeOJ - 2012-09-05

My parents moved from Quebec because of the separatist forces there during that time. They knew it was never sustainable for Quebec to separate from Canada completely and as English speakers they did experience some hatred and discrimination. That being said the whole separatist movement in Quebec has sort of faded in recent years so it would be interesting to see if Marois intends to actually push for separation more than symbolically.

Old_Zircon - 2012-09-05

I've heard from a few Montreal citizens that if you ever interact with the Montreal police and you don't speak French you're taking a risk.

I watched the beginning of the video half a dozen times and didn't see anything to the right of her head, what am I supposed to be looking for?

Meerkat - 2012-09-06

It's right at :05, watch in full screen and a hole appears right beside her head. It is accompanied by a "click" that sounds like something punching through fabric or construction paper.

EvilHomer - 2012-09-06

Oh good. Only a shooting. That's a step up from getting sodomized body parts in the mail!

Just out of curiosity, when did Canada turn into North America's Japan?

mouser - 2012-09-06

The shooting occurred outside the building. That is a pixel glitch.

Also, WTF peepz. The commentaries about the language issues are far out of reality. Come down to Mtl and see for yourself.
