The people you've talke to have been idiots. Quebec is by far the most left leaning of the provinces and the PQ may be the mist left leaning of Quebec's provincial parties.

There's much to be said for and against the seperation movement which many non-quebecois canadians fail to grasp, but the movement on the whole is on a decline. The pro-sovereignty party may have won the election, but with 32% of the popular vote that means that 68% of the provence voted federalist.

That's kinda what I thought given where I was hearing the opinions from.

Since the amalgamated right-wing Conservative-Reform-Alliance Party won a majority government about a year and a half ago, the tone of political discussion in Canada has become relatively shrill and right-wing. Their general platform of "National harmony through increased surveillance and incarceration" plays well with the stability-seeking baby boomers who make up a healthy chunk of the voting public right now.

The rise of Sun TV, a low-budget Fox News tabloid channel owned by Quebeccor Media (A media company that promotes populist separatism in Quebec and populist anglocentrism in the rest of Canada, because $$$), has added fuel to the fire by polarizing most issues and generally adopting the same "Libruls Bad" rhetoric heard across the border.

All of this does little to explain why this shooting occurred, so I look forward to hear more about this dude's motives. Overall, instead of reflecting on Canada's polarizing politics, I'm willing to bet that the right-wing spin that comes out of this incident is some wierd "You elect extremists into power, extreme things happen" soundbite that the boomers will eat up.

Historically the PQ. Has been pretty left leaning, but the current incarnation also has the "assimilate or leave" mentality thrown in. And by that, they mean "be francophone, Christian and hopefully white or leave".

Also, the right wing spin will be "this is why we need our politicians hidden from such dangerous events as talking to the press" and "this is why we need to beat all protestors because one of them could be gunning for Dear Leader".

I agree, man. A lot of folks I know seem to love the socialist bent of the PQ, but tend to forget about the national- prefix.

I watched it half a dozen times before I read this, then watched it a few more times, and that STILL looks like a compression artifact to me, even knowing it's not. I actually saw it every time but I didn't think it was anything.

It's right at :05, watch in full screen and a hole appears right beside her head. It is accompanied by a "click" that sounds like something punching through fabric or construction paper.
