Watching Arino enjoy the bike part was great, and it made me feel some shame that i was always on the verge of smashing my controller in that part.

MacGyver Style Bomb - 2012-08-25

See my post below. In this version, the bike sequence is tough but fair, and not the hard-as-balls sequence that we know and loathe.

MacGyver Style Bomb - 2012-08-25

It should be noted that the difficulty of the Japanese version was toned down from the original American version. For instance, you'll note that one starts with five lives as opposed to three and in many of the the more infamous levels, a lot of the traps and hard parts were just flat out removed.

Riskbreaker - 2012-08-25

Ah yes, i'm aware of it. I'm still giving him credit for not using any warps.

Old_Zircon - 2012-08-25

Is Battletoads really that hard? I never beat it as a kid but I remember it being easier than Ninja Turtles or Snake Rattle & Roll, more along the lines of the later levels of Super Mario Brothers.

FABIO - 2012-08-25

I could consistently get to the Technodrome in Ninja Turtles after about a month.

It took me over 3 months to get to the point where I could maybe get past the snake pit level in Battle one third of the time. The unicycle level is literally impossible until you discover the pause trick.

Games that were harder than Battletoads:

uhhh.....Legacy of the Wizard?

FABIO - 2012-08-25

All of which are harder than Castlevania 3, totally the easiest of the series (if you count the adventure game puzzles of 2). It still floors me he couldn't beat that one.

Old_Zircon - 2012-08-25

I could consistently get to the technodrome but I never made it to the end of that. Always got close, but not quite.

Old_Zircon - 2012-08-25

Yeah, Legacy Of the Wizard was harder. Solar Jetman was kind of harder but in a very different way.

Old_Zircon - 2012-08-25

The snake pit level was where Battletoads started to get tough, for sure, but I could get to that pretty consistently and I never owned battletoads.

Old_Zircon - 2012-08-26

Don't get me wrong, this game is really hard.

TheQuakeSoldier - 2012-08-25

Best NES game, hands down. Every level is unique, and just like with Arino, every time you play it, you learn a bit more and get just a bit farther. I could never beat the second to last level without cheats (the spinner race).

FABIO - 2012-08-25

The trick is to pause the game the instant you hit a turn, press in the new direction, then unpause.

You HAVE to do this. There is absolutely no other way. A human thumb cannot physically move fast enough from one direction to the other inside of the margin of error you get. I tried it once on an emulator with over 300 save state reloads and never even made it halfway.

Caminante Nocturno - 2012-08-26

The best NES game is Super Mario Bros. 3, or maybe Startropics. This is the worst NES game, hands down.

kingofthenothing - 2012-08-27

To me the best NES game was Crystalis. It had everything I liked about Zelda 1 but more of it. Plus it was fast, the storyline was decent and the game had great graphics and music for the time.

Dirty Sanchez - 2012-08-26

I remember getting stuck on the bike level. How in hell are you supposed to even advance after that?

Riskbreaker - 2012-08-26

Most of us got stuck there as kids. Sadly i never discover any of the warps back then.

Sanest Man Alive - 2012-08-26

Don't think I wouldn't notice the Azumanga Daioh music there, Game Center CX. And when he's trying to run the train to Osaka!

I'm endlessly delighted to see him enjoying that hellish jetbike race. It's like a balm for the inner child.

Louis Armstrong - 2012-08-26

A soothing balm indeed.

FABIO - 2012-08-26

Someone on the dev team absolutely hated children without a doubt. All they had to do was make it mostly a brawler like the first level then throw in the occasional wacky level. Christ they even could have just given you unlimited continue and not set you back when you died.

The face that there were half a dozen versions of this game and not once did they give you unlimited continues (even the portable version!) means they did it just to be assholes.

Nikon - 2012-08-26

A game this hard should have unlimited continues or at least a simple password system.

lordyam - 2012-08-26

i remember this game being the reason i first bought a game genie
