Wow, i thought this was deader than elvis.

I saw some Melies shorts back when I was taking Cinema from Larry Gottheim in the seventies. They were only seventy years old back then, not more than a hundred, but that's not the only thing that makes these movies seem more amazing now. There's Martin Scorcese's HUGO, of course, but there's also Tim Burton, and Pixar, and Joss Whedon, and Star Wars, and every summer comic book movie.

I'm having a hard time believing that these films were colored by hand. I saw some hand-colored melies shorts back then, and they weren't nearly as amazing as this. Has someone with a PC carried out a hoax? Perhaps, but I prefer to think of it as "AN ILLUSION".

Holy shit you're old. What're you like 50 something?

I didn't much care for Hugo, so thanks for posting this JHM, seeing Melies work by itself is rad.

The summer of 1999: I get accepted into the University of Washington, the long and arduous process that entails for somebody with no money and middling grades, and I take a French Cinema class. The prerequisite being two semesters of French. I can fake French pretty well, I studied Latin and can read it quite competently, but speaking it is way out of my league. Nobody at the university actually checked if I had taken the prereqs.

I do great for the Georges Melies segment. Fantastic, even.

Then came "Le Grand Illusion" without subtitles. I was fucked.
