Next step is half a dozen sad guys walking around Pyongyang in slightly-off Elmo suits waiting to take pictures with tourists who never come.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-07-11

...but still ranting about Jews.

HarrietTubmanPI - 2012-07-11

They probably have cameras under the costumes to make sure they are still smiling.

Jet Bin Fever - 2012-07-11

Ahh, to be a fat retarded manchild with a ridiculous haircut and your own country.

Riskbreaker - 2012-07-11

It probably goes without saying that there's a group of military guys behind him who are the ones that actualy shout the real orders in the country. It's hard to tell how aware he is of what's going on there, he looks so clueless, the disney show is not helping.

gmol - 2012-07-11

No one ever suspected the real leaders of North Korea were inside the Disney suits.

gmol - 2012-07-11

Not really unlicensed...I mean it is a sovereign country, they can do whatever they want.

That guy - 2012-07-11

I bet you wouldn't say that if they broadcast a game without the express written consent of Major League Baseball.

gmol - 2012-07-11

Why wouldn't i?

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-07-11

"Unlicensed" is accurate. I'm 99.9% sure that no money went to Disney, nor did anyone at Disney issue contracts letting a tubby dictator use Disney trademarked and copyrighted characters for his little tea party.

By your logic, China's knock-offs of just about everything isn't unlicensed, and it's fine because they're a sovereign country and can do what they want, right?

gmol - 2012-07-12

As far as I know, North Korea hasn't signed any treaty agreement with the U.S. where they said they would enforce U.S. copyright. Are you suggesting a North Korean citizen should be sued for breaking a law in a country she doesn't live in?

The case with China is more subtle. While China has signed some agreements (as old as the early 1900s) declaring they would respect copyright, it isn't clear to me that Disney characters would be legally enforced (given that most of them are more than 50 years old, how retroactive copyright extension is synchronized across the world is beyond my ken). China has recently signed new copyright treaties involving Disney and Dreamworks, which are very recent, and I don't know how they would affect particular derivative works.

I don't know if That Guy's comment was a direct reference to the fact that differences in copyright extend to broadcasts and how U.S. baseball was broadcast in China.

Blind convolution of copyright and morality (as your tone suggests) demonstrates a lack of understanding of the derivative nature of all art, and the relationship between copyright and censorship.

cognitivedissonance - 2012-07-11

Is he the son who illegally snuck unto Japan to go to Tokyo Disney?

Reefer Fez - 2012-07-11

No, that was an older brother, Kim Jong-nam.

Also, there's a lot of speculation on Japanese TV now about who the girl next to Un is. They're thinking it may be his wife, since she's showing up all the time now.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-07-11

I was listening to NPR about that. There's speculation she's a prospective bride, an aide, some kind of adviser, etc.

If she wound up in one of those princess costumes, we'd probably have a better idea.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-07-11

You know every time I see audiences in North Korea it reminds me of that scene in A Wrinkle in Time where they go to the nuclear holocaust planet where all the little boys have to bounce their ball at the same time or the space brain will TORTURE THEM FOREVER.

The reactions on their faces are exactly like how I picture the people in that book.

TeenerTot - 2012-07-11

Disney should go after them with the same fervor they used on nursery schools.

That guy - 2012-07-11

Hah! Dang, I forgot about all that. Can you tell the full story?

TeenerTot - 2012-07-11

Not much to tell...Diney went after some day care centers in Florida a few years back, for having painted disney characters on the walls...
