Generally not a fan of spoken word...but it was nice hearing in a different accent.

baleen - 2012-05-31

In comparing the lies taught in both Israeli and Palestinian textbooks it's by no means off the cuff to ask either population why they are raised to hate. It's pretty characteristic of new nations to have racism sewn into the character of their nation's birth as a means of building national identity (Palestine was a backwater slave state until last century, after all), and I'd be the last to say the Jews are any different.

When Noam Chomsky insinuates that Israel is trying to "slouch toward a holocaust of the Palestinian people" it's not really helping, either. It's completely false. It's a sad intellectual game for their (Finkelstein, Chomsky, that attorney that conducted the circus in Malaysia finding Bush guilty of war crimes, and so many others) own glorification and amusement with little concern for the actual safety of either nation, and that's why I get so angry.

I get angry because I'm curious about why there is so much interest in "defending Palestine" when it is obviously so much more complicated and involves all the world's major powers. The Palestinian Authority has used a billion dollars to fatten up a corrupt autocracy controlled by foreign thugs, and to point this out is met with accusations that one has been conditioned by Fox News or ZOG or something. Palestinians themselves will argue against the excesses of the PLO/PA... but alas, the road to peace is blocked only by "Zionists," (a word itself steeped in complexity and a varied history) even though the vast majority of Israelis are against the kinds of horrible behavior that certain users on this website feel inclined to post as a matter of habit (or issue of the week or whatever the motivator is).

It's suspicious to me. That's all.
I promise I'll stop responding to it.

You're not helping Israel.

HarrietTubmanPI - 2012-05-31

Well I've talked to people from Palestine and Israel and frankly the Palestinians will deny the PLO or deny that they are terrorists, but so will Israel. Both sides school their kids in how to fight and how to shoot and how to arm themselves, and both sides have their share of crazies. Both sides don't want either side around and frankly I don't see any peace until they do one of two things:

1) Genocide of the other party
2) Giving up religion

I'd wish for number two simply because both sides think genocide in the name of god is a perfectly sane thing to do. Of course I'm not saying EVERYONE on both sides thinks this way but there are people in the powers that be who do and until they let go of this stupid idea that god told them to kill it'll keep getting worse and worse as the technology and abilities of people to kill each other improve over time.

That's the problem with a lot of the middle east - fundamentalist religion. And, this is a problem in other parts of the world, too. I don't care if you believe in whatever god or gods you want, but people are going to have to start growing up about what they believe and stop hurting others in the name of their religion.

HarrietTubmanPI - 2012-05-31

*correction, Israel will deny they do anything wrong.

poorwill - 2012-06-01

baleen, it's like this: when somebody tells you that the democrats are corrupt and in the pockets of business, you can't help but agree, right? But then they tell you that that's why they're voting republican you go whaaaaaaaaaat??????? Because that's dumb. And that's how you are on Israel/Palestine.

PegLegPete - 2012-06-01

Religion is a strong part of it but both sides could still argue about who owns the territory, or has the right to own it. For example you could still claim "our ancestors had it first" without religion. But the whole argument is rather stupid because if you think about it a sizable portion of both groups had ancestors who lived in the area at the same time anyway, and who owned/lived on it before that? They sure as fuck didn't call themselves Jewish or Palestinian

In my opinion there are only a few options aside from - as HarrietTubmanPI pointed out - genocide: the Israeli state be dissolved, the Palestinians leave, or some kind of two state solution.

The spoken word wasn't that bad.

Bort - 2012-06-01

The one hope I have for Israel / Palestine is if peace somehow becomes far more profitable for the common man, particularly on the Palestinian side of the equation. A Palestinian man making good money at some new joint Israeli / Palestinian factory may not have a whole lot of love for the stinking Israelis down in the warehouse, but for the sake of a healthy paycheck he'll want things stable enough to continue.

There are details and issues, such as the key shit-stirrers are already wealthy enough to not be motivated by a paycheck, and this whole thing would require a very altruistic company to gamble a lot of capital on a highly risky venture. I don't see many United States companies being willing to take that step. Then there is the small matter of what exactly such a business would produce that would allow it to be profitable enough to be worth the risk; any such business would probably need to be a charity effort or a tax write-off, like those companies that make work for the mentally handicapped so they can feel the self-esteem of holding down a job.

baleen - 2012-06-01

Poorwill, that's absolutely nothing like what I'm like on the issues of Israel/Palestine.

The only thing I am "like" is not really liking or respecting the way Gomorrah approaches important issues that I care about, whether it be Israel-Palestine or his views on American military service overseas, issues he supposedly cares about on this website. This is a vastly complex set of issues with no big bad guy. The story can be framed in a variety outcomes dependent upon what timelines you choose to frame the issue in and which historical figures you wish you highlight.

For the record, I met Rachel Corrie at school a few times and thought she was a passionate and sweet girl who did not deserve to be run over by lunatic Orthodox Jewish tractors. My great aunt was also a "Zionist" who saved a thousand Jews from the concentration camps while working for FDR, and it's difficult for me, both personally and in the vein of actual historical evidence, to consider her in the ways that so many of you seem all to willing to paint her and people like her without a shred of understanding, or at least not without a biased understanding, of all the many details involved in this stuff.

I also have little respect for Finkelstein as a lecturer, academic or a human being, and find he attracts an irritating contingent among leftists who's motivations for getting involved in the Palestine/Israel issue in the first place are suspicious to me and likely disingenuous or superficial at best. He attracts the worst attention from rightwing Jews while drumming up the tempers of the most vapid and hypocritical factions of the international socialist Left.

I also fucking hate spoken word and I five-starred this for evil.

The end.

The PO-Estinians have responded to the Baleen Occupation with a volley of Scolding Liberal Guilt missiles!

memedumpster - 2012-05-31

We of the PO-Estinian regional snarkocrasy, Ham-Ass, demand the immediate withdrawal of Baleen settlements to the original areas set forth by the POE Charter. We want a return to mutual friendship in a hostile Internet for the sharing of enlightening and meaningful videos, as well as cats and broken people videos, for the purpose of bringing its members closer, not pushing them further apart; these videos arranged in loosely defined weekly themes, of which there have been none since the conflict began.

The Mothership - 2012-06-01

Baleen further agrees to the direct application of his POETV resources to reparation as specified in Annexes, III, IV, V, and VI, relating respectively to 80s schlock, to Jews doing amusing things, to coal and derivatives of coal, and to random shit and other chemical products; provided always that the value of the videos transferred and any services rendered by him under these Annexes, assessed in the manner therein prescribed shall be credited to him towards liquidation of his obligations under the above Articles.

baleen - 2012-06-01

Drawing upon the Bal-four Declaration I must respectively decline. Any further attempts at "peace talks" between our vested parties must be preempted by the complete disarmament and withdrawal of the Gomorifitadan terrorists, who bring great shame to POE-istine and to the promise of mutual understanding and peace, and, ultimately, a unified and strong POE-istinian nation-state.

Until innocent Palestinians are no longer used as human shields to make a spoiled college student seem radical in a sexual kind of way the Concord will remain that all volleys from the hills of Gomorrah will likely be met in kind with heavy bombardments of Ninja Cop II ordinance.

svraz - 2012-06-01

"Until innocent Palestinians are no longer used as human shields to make a spoiled college student seem radical in a sexual kind of way" This. This speaks volumes about you and your understanding of this subject.

Fezren - 2012-06-01

What a shitty poem.

Maru - 2012-06-01

spoken word.

Riskbreaker - 2012-06-01

Can't these people just solve their problems with a pokemon duel, and call it a day?

cognitivedissonance - 2012-06-01

Palestine would bring out a Pidgie and Israel would use a cheat code anyway.

cognitivedissonance - 2012-06-01

I can say, with genuine honesty, that I have literally no opinion on Israel/Palestine whatsoever. It might as well be on the moon.

HarrietTubmanPI - 2012-06-01

That area is the Balkan Powder Keg of our generation.

Riskbreaker - 2012-06-01

Most of Israel looks like the moon already, nothing but rocks and more rocks.

Maru - 2012-06-01

nothing but moon rocks

Riskbreaker - 2012-06-02

No deal, McCutcheon, that moon money is mine!

cognitivedissonance - 2012-06-02

You'd think the Chosen Land would be less shitty.
