What the crap!? I actually thought that the first minute or so was setting up some kind of weird joke.
Also, youtube comment shitshow.

This is insane. Some of those faculty and residents have to come forward- too many witnesses. That or I'm calling bullshit, even.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-05-23

Is anyone else picturing the shit they would have screamed at people in that room?

Holy fuck, that is some serious 1920's humor right there.

CrimsonHyperSloth - 2012-05-23

I was picturing what I was yelling as I mercilessly stabbed whoever dared laugh.

NewHeavenSalesman - 2012-05-23

why is this guy complaining, gorillas are supposed to be really strong and kind

just another example of liberals whining about nothing!!!!

kingarthur - 2012-05-23

"Ronald Reagan Center etc..."

Well, THERE'S YOUR PROBLEM , RIGHT THERE....

gmol - 2012-05-23

I only voted this up, because it looked like a very standard case of academic politics insanity. The high production value and faux-investigative journalism style seal it.

That guy - 2012-05-25

What the hell, guy?
Short of finding out some kind of outrageous manipulation of the truth in this short documentary, there's no reason to conclude "this is some politically correct bullshit".

Even if I grant you best-case scenario, which you don't seem to deserve, people can't just say whatever in a professional setting.

Furthermore, there's no wit in what was done to this guy at all, so the "satirical roast" factor doesn't enter into it.

gmol - 2012-05-25

You obviously haven't met enough disgrunfuled academics (in medicine, no less) to read this for what it probably is. It does read a little funny don't you think? Surgeon gets tenure, then claims his boss is "trying to destroy him". An entire room full of racist residents? I have to believe there were at least a few residents of color at his roast.

You are calling this a "documentary"; I don't even have to look up who made it to know that production was funded by the doctor; not an independent film maker (credits tend to go along with documentaries...this isn't one).

That guy - 2012-05-26

Yeah, I think it reads funny, and your bullshit detector might be correct here. Time will tell. At face value I wouldn't assume that it's fabricated. I'm not saying that all the residents must be racists or that there were no other blacks there.

But I didn't interpret your first comment the way you intended, apparently. You now seem to be saying that it's wildly exaggerated as a vendetta against his boss? I thought you meant "academic politics" as in campusy or politically correct, with some of a 'climbing over your peers' factor.

I'm saying that roasting someone in a professional setting would have different standards than on comedy central or the elks lodge. That's the best-case scenario, a roasting gone terribly awry, which isn't an excuse.

gmol - 2012-05-26

A normal socially functional scenario:
Residents roast one of their profs, cross the line or realize they've unintentionally crossed the beams. Prof's feelings are hurt, residents realize and send a fruit basket and send out a some sort of self deprecationy video that evens things out by making fun of them selves.

The socially abnormal scenario:
The same as above until after the prof's feelings are hurt. Prof then hires production crew and social media company to make youtube video.

That guy - 2012-05-26

How does that explain "black guy as gorilla getting buttfucked by white boss"? It doesn't.

It's either a big fabrication, or some people need to be fired. This isn't a "he said, she said".

chumbucket - 2012-05-23

Making the complaint public...YouTube

Jet Bin Fever - 2012-05-23

Stupid people everywhere, no matter how far up you go. I've been astonished by medical people I work with who still call Obama a "porch monkey" and make fun of their hispanic and black patients. These are people with about as much education as you could hope for with the same general stupidity of someone with little to none.

Robin Kestrel - 2012-05-23

"These are people with about as much education as you could hope for with the same general stupidity of someone with little to none."

Quoted for depressing truth.

Kabbage - 2012-05-24

Sums it up nicely

memedumpster - 2012-05-23

If you didn't know the medical industry was staffed with people who are borderline human garbage, you've never been really sick, known anyone really sick, or are a doctor and therefore part of the problem.

StanleyPain - 2012-05-23

StanleyPain liked your comment.

That guy - 2012-05-25

Between what you and Jet Bin Fever said, I have to say I've know people in medicine all my life, and this doesn't quite mesh with my experience. They've been donkeys, and assholes and full of cognitive biases, but I haven't experienced them to be MORE backward or prejudiced than their fellow man.

Then again, Freakonomics had a segment about how doctors are worse at washing their hands than everyone else at the hospital. Maybe they can't wash their souls' hands either.
/clunky metaphor

Macho Nacho - 2012-05-23

First it was some student complaining about Asians in the library. Now faculty members discriminating another faculty member based on his skin color. What the hell UCLA?

fulakarp - 2012-05-24

This man suffered a horrible, humiliating ordeal and I can't even fucking keep myself from giggling that he is Dr. Head, professor of Head and Neck Surgery
