"Anchorage Already has enough we have to tolerate! Look at all these minorities! Cut us some slack and Vote no!"

cognitivedissonance - 2012-04-01

I once met a Christian who wanted to open a bed and breakfast but refused to get licensed so that she could refuse to allow gays to stay in her house.

While the massive Precious Moments collection might have been a bit of a kitsch draw, the rest of the decor would've frightened any homosexual away within seconds, so I don't think she would've had to worry.

She was later taken to court for operating an unlicensed bed and breakfast.

American Standard - 2012-04-01

See how Christians are persecuted? Poor things.

Cena_mark - 2012-04-01

Being a Christian in today's America is like being a Jew in Nazi Germany.

Killer Joe - 2012-04-01

First they came for the unlicensed bed and breakfast operators who didn't want to get a license because they disliked the idea of having to serve homosexuals who would want to stay at their bed and breakfast, but I did nothing because I was not an unlicensed bed and breakfast operator who didn't want to get a license because I disliked the idea of having to serve homosexuals who would want to stay at my bed and breakfast.

fedex - 2012-04-01

these are for Joe

American Standard - 2012-04-01

I think my favorite bit is that the creator of this ad has straight-up admitted to purposely conflating transsexuals and transgendered people for shock value.

5 for evil, lies, willfully perpetuating ignorance/misinformation/prejudice because you KNOW your real objection is just bigotry, and being too cheap to shell out for a real animator.

American Standard - 2012-04-01

I meant "conflating transvestites and transgendered people", of course. Hurpa derp durp.

Comeuppance - 2012-04-01

To be honest, if the point is to prevent hiring/firing based on sexual orientation, especially those who are transgendered, I don't see the point of the proposition. Those that are willing to hire them will still hire them, and those that aren't can just turn down the applicant without disclosing a reason.

All this does is give the applicants legal recourse if the person says that's why to their face, which they're not likely to anyway.

Spaceman Africa - 2012-04-01

And the guy behind this coincidentally looks like a gay porn star.

Cena_mark - 2012-04-01

I haven't seen this commercial on TV yet. Alaskan politics are pretty funny. I've met some hardcore Palin fans, and people who know somebody who knows somebody who knows Sarah, and say she's the devil.
Folks here are far more distrusting of the government, and anti-environmental than back home in Georgia.

Nikon - 2012-04-01

This makes me sad.

Gmork - 2012-04-01

The problem that arises with this is that, while i'm all for tolerance, what if the transvestite is a horrible babysitter? What if they just give off that "drug addict" vibe? It's unfair to force them to have to accept it someone who might not be fit for the position, regardless of their orientation.

Is this really a big enough issue to warrant a commercial, much less a proposition? I mean seriously, what is the social climate in alaska like when THIS is a hot button for people?

nuzzles - 2012-04-01

I think they are just trying to prevent another disaster like that chronicled in the horror documentary "Mrs. Doubtfire".

asian hick - 2012-04-01

There's so much wrong with this idiotic comment.

Toenails - 2012-04-01

Forcing someone to hire a transvestite is not the same as making sure transvestites are not being discriminated against in the hiring processes, no matter how much this commercial really wants you to think it is.

So if they gave off some sort of... oh I don't know... let's say "drug addict vibe" (because that's totally a thing), then you don't have to hire them and not worry about violating their civil rights because that has nothing to do with their sexual orientation.

Gmork - 2012-04-01

Then the problem isn't on my end, it's the wording of the commercial. I figured they would exaggerate and twist words like nobody's business, but from what you're telling me, they flat-out lied.

They state you cannot refuse to hire a transgender/whatever person if they apply for the position. They do not say "You can't refuse them on the basis of gender orientation", what they say is "You cannot refuse them if they apply. Period".

Toenails is saying it's just an anti-discrimination measure, although neglected to say how it would be enforced or monitored other than if the transgender individual personally complained to the BBB or whoever polices that garbage.

So then, Asian, how am I stupid for literally interpreting their blatant lie? Because I didnt go and read up on the bill? I don't live in Alaska. How about whenever you get the urge to comment on something I've posted, you just chew a stick of gum instead of saying something ignorant.

dead_cat - 2012-04-01

Gmork, you're stupid because you believed that someone would try to pass legislation that would prevent anyone with a job opening from NOT hiring a member of a group of people -- FOR ANY REASON -- and would manage to get enough support for it to get it on the ballot. I'm not saying it couldn't happen, but it's ABSURD.

Gmork - 2012-04-01

Yes but it's ALASKA.

Gmork - 2012-04-01

Last time I give the benefit of the doubt around here, especially since every pseudo-intellectual is just dying for a chance to tell someone they were wrong about something.

Gmork - 2012-04-01

Also, dead_cat, you are incorrect. I never believed at any point that the bill would prevent anyone with a job opening from not hiring a member of a group of people -- for any reason. (your exact words).

I don't know why you thought that. I never said anything like that. Leaves me wondering why you even bothered typing it, being based on nothing but (bad) conjecture.

Huh.

asian hick - 2012-04-01

I honestly can't tell whether you're trolling or you're just honestly this clueless. Yes, it's not unreasonable to expect you to read up on something before commenting on it instead of buying into the lie of a blatant piece of propaganda. It took me literally 30 seconds this morning to read up on Prop 5. Not a bad investment in time given the bill potentially has national consequences to one of the biggest hot-button issues in political discourse today.

Also, are you seriously asking in your original comment whether it's warranted to protect a persecuted minority? Or wondering whether LGBT rights is really a hot button issue, even in Alaska? The answer to both questions is "of course, you dolt."

Incidentally, you're also conflating transvestite with transgender (like a lot of these comments), just like the propaganda attempts to do. Educate yourself so you don't embarrass yourself this badly again.

asian hick - 2012-04-01

Also, just so everybody knows, this guy just went through and gave all my submitted videos 1 star.

I seriously can't believe that you're real and that petty.

Toenails - 2012-04-01

If it makes you feel better, you're more than welcome to go through all my videos and give them one star... because... fuck, what do I care? I give my own videos one star because THAT'S HOW I ROLL!!!

goat - 2012-04-01

"Then the problem isn't on my end, it's the wording of the commercial."

Egads, who could have possibly predicted that this masterpiece could have in any way distorted the debate in some manner! The world just doesn't make sense anymore!

Gmork - 2012-04-02

You guys are being purposely dumb now.

That's okay, dont bother trying to understand what happened. Just throw insults where they don't belong.

Gmork - 2012-04-02

This was a pathetic attempt at belittlement. You still make assumptions about what you think my opinion is and you are still wrong.

And hick, why would I read up on the bill at all since i'm neither gay nor an alaskan? That's nice it took you five minutes. It would take me five minutes to jerk off and the act would be equally pointless.

Gmork - 2012-04-02

Also I rated 2 and 3 stars as well as 1, depending on if the video was any good or not. Thanks for playing!

Mancakes - 2012-04-02

Haha, look at him try to disengage.

Gmork - 2012-04-02

I might have taken offense if anyone had been right about a single thing they said. Cute though.

joelkazoo - 2012-04-01

Personally, I would love to have Eddie Izzard babysit my kids.

fedex - 2012-04-01

as long as he force fed them crack and smack, me too!

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-04-01

I logged in to also post in favor of Izzard Day Care. My stars for you.

And for those people who disagree, I'd ask where they'd want their children to learn the importance of the choice, "Cake or Death?" From the hoodlums on the streets?

dairyqueenlatifah - 2012-04-01

Are there really THAT many trannies in Alaska?

themilkshark - 2012-04-01

All these gays actin' willy nilly

dairyqueenlatifah - 2012-04-01

Gettin' all uppity

Blue - 2012-04-01

Is that how people get jobs? I applied! You have to hire me!

What happens is two transvestites apply for the same job?

Xenocide - 2012-04-01

I'm going to wear a dress to every job interview I have from now on. And also grow a beard, just to drive the point home. Also I will refer to everyone as "princess" and end every sentence with a sassy snap of my fingers.

Now I can basically walk up to any employer and force him to choose between hiring me or being raped in prison.

dead_cat - 2012-04-01

Then those two transvestites must fight to the death, whereupon the victor will devour the heart of the defeated, thereby absorbing all their power and crazy-stereotypical fabulousness.

Jet Bin Fever - 2012-04-01

Horribly fucking evil. I mean, pure undiluted concentrated evil.

Oscar Wildcat - 2012-04-01

High school gym coaches and priests don't want anyone muscling in on their territory.

StanleyPain - 2012-04-01

I like how the commercials' argument is not that the trans person might be a danger to kids (even though that would be a stupid argument) but that since ALL people EVERYWHERE hate trans people, the person hiring them would suffer for it.

Funny how it's the little slip ups that totally out someone's irrational bigotry.

Xenocide - 2012-04-01

Anchorage is already a tolerant city. That's why hiring a trans person would cause Carol to lose all her customers. Because they're all so tolerant.

Oscar Wildcat - 2012-04-01

They tolerate carol wearing men's pants and sporting a bowl cut. So there's that.

dead_cat - 2012-04-01

I'm guessing Anchorage is tolerant so long as "those people" stay in their place and pretend not to exist around the Real People.

bestie - 2012-04-12

What a bunch of cocksuckers hang out here now.
