Was she from Europe by any chance? Because this cartoon has a secret, ridiculous origin there.

Marsupalami was actually a European comic book character who's been around since the 1950's. The original stories don't include the ape or the jungle setting, and instead have him as the pet/sidekick to a TinTin-ish hero named Spirou.

The French publisher, Marsu Productions, wanted to promote the character in North America, so they licensed him off to Disney. Disney mostly ignored him and eventually crapped out this show, mostly because they were contractually obligated to.

The show was terrible and unsuccessful to the point that Disney ended up getting sued by Marsu, on the grounds that Disney had wrecked the property's chances of success in North America. I think Disney settled out of court.

This was on when I was a kid, and I despised it. Duck Tales and Tale Spin may have been mediocre, but this show made those 2 look like Citizen Kane and Schindler's List. That horrendous "Boobah!" catchphrase was an easy way to identify lame asses on the playground.

It's "houba." In the Belgian comics, it's the only thing the males say, aside from when they mimic people. Here, it's just a bullshit catchphrase.

Worse off, Shnookums and Meat was actually spun off from this show. There were also Sebastian the Crab segments. Why anyone found this appealing, I can't surmise.
