Check around the site a little. We already had "Horrible Cartoon Week", which quickly evolved into "Horrible Cartoon Fortnight" and now continues indefinitely as "Horrible Cartoon Infinity".

Its like The Flinstones, but with fish puns instead.

Ritter sounds horrid. You can almost hear his "just hand me the paycheck" effort.

I watched Capitol Critters because I felt sorry for it. I gave that poor, doomed show pity ratings.

Actually, the show was based on a fairly cool comic that was out in the mid 1980s (the first work of Sam Keith before he did The Maxx and started writing his own material). This cartoon used the name, some of the characters, and the setting, but pretty much had absolutely nothing to do with the style of the comic (which was not about strings of puns and shit like that, but rather a jokey neo-noir setting)

Fish Police was a terrible comic with predictable dialogue and flat art with a piss poor sense of perspective. Moncuse landed a television show because some executive figured they were going to spawn another Ninja Turtle phenomenon.

...which, given that it was part of the B&W comics boom of the 1980s, still puts Fish Police above most of the unsalable birdcage lining of that era.

I can't complain about FP too much. It gave Sam Kieth and Mike Mignola some early work. At the same time, I lost interest once I realized FP was just Get Smart, with some vague "hey, I was once human, and now I'm in a fish world" subplot that went nowhere.

I have a certain affection for 80s independent comics; as with most nostalgia it probably has more to do with what was going on in my life, but I could admire how so many creators were just doing their damnedest to realize their vision. Of course 90% of it was crap, but you'll get that.

This was when embarrassing comics like "Omaha the Cat Dancer" littered the shelves, but it was also before Dave Sim went loopy, and it was also when Brian Michael Bendis worked behind the counter at my comic book shop. Oh yes.

There were good comics produced during the B&W boom (and still worth seeking out) but the birdcage liner, the dross was what helped turn the boom into the inevitable bust - too many people who thought they'd be the next big thing with their college-study-hall-doodling level art and awkward storylines, too many dinky little here-today-gone-tomorrow publishers run by opportunists trying to ride the wake of whatever sort of comic was considered the hot new flavor of the month (TMNT knockoffs one week, sci-fi comics the next, maybe sword and sorcery afterwards, who knew what the week after that) and comic shop owners desparate not to miss out on what could be the next big thing over-ordering the junk and being left with piles of unsellable comics on their hands - and when the boom went bust creators, publishers and stores suffered, the innocent and the guilty alike.

Of course, nobody seemed to learn anything from the B&W bust or the 90's boom and bust or any of the other mini-booms and busts ('bad girls' comics, small-press comic character action figures, etc. etc.) since then.

And you know, I never read Fish Police but I've come across ads for it in comics from that era.
