The Mothership - 2012-03-18

Ha, Space Jockey!

This better not be a remake of Event Horizon, Ridley.

StanleyPain - 2012-03-18

Can't fucking wait...

Binro the Heretic - 2012-03-18

Dear people who make trailers for films.

You know that orchestral "BUHWAAAAAMP!!!" sound you add for emphasis? You know, the one you ripped off from the "Inception" trailer?

Knock it the fuck off.

Seriously.

Last time I went to the movies, five of the seven trailers I saw used that shit.

The other two used Marilyn Manson covers of other people's songs.

I am not even making that up.

Aelric - 2012-03-18

It's sad when a thing that is super effective gets used so much that it loses it's power.

1394 - 2012-03-18

Sporting events can cease to use the BWAAAAAMP sound over the PA as well

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-03-18

You mean the "BUHWAAAAAMP" from the V'Ger alien in Star Trek: The Motion Picture?

riedquat - 2012-03-18

You mean 'The Zimmer?'

http://inception.davepedu.com/

Binro the Heretic - 2012-03-18

Yeah, that's the one.

Most recently, I saw it used in trailers for "The Avengers", "Prometheus", "Spiderman", "The Hunger Games" and "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter". Granted, some were more subtle about it than others, but still.

"The Cabin in the Woods" used the Marilyn Manson cover of "I Put a Spell on You" and "Wrath of the Titans" used their cover of "Sweet Dreams (are Made of These)".

If you can explain that last one to me, I'd be ever so grateful.

urbanelf - 2012-03-18

The "BUHWAAAAAMP!!!" sound is sometimes called violoncello or, more commonly, 'cello.

sosage - 2012-03-18

You mean the one used in the original Alien trailer? Wait. What do you mean this movie is tied to Alien?

Binro the Heretic - 2012-03-19

I remember the original "Alien" trailers being without music.

I remember the one with the egg cracking open and green light coming out and the one where the word "ALIEN" slowly forms on the screen.

Was there another trailer?

Mother Lumper - 2012-03-18

The leaked script is making this out to be really bad schlock, but I want to see it anyway.

Binro the Heretic - 2012-03-18

The original was schlock, but it was very stylish schlock.

magnificent wang - 2012-03-18

I haven't read the script, but the company I work for has done several vfx shots for Prometheus. The out-of-context sequences I've seen are epic, and thrilling. Just like Alien, it's not the script that makes this one exciting.

The Mothership - 2012-03-18

Binro, Alien was not schlock. It had corporate greed, labor organizing against the man, questions of artificial intelligence, female flight officers, a tantalizing back story and raw fear. The Alien script is really quite complex.

Binro the Heretic - 2012-03-18

"Alien" is one of my favorite sci-fi films and one of my favorite horror films. It had everything you said, plus it had a great visual style, a stellar cast and its influence is still seen in films today.

It was still a schlock plot.

A small group of people in an isolated place being picked off by something dangerous. Sure, there was some deep, complex stuff to dress it up, but it boils down to the same plot as the average backwoods slasher flick.

The Mothership - 2012-03-18

it was a ripoff of 'The Last Patrol' yes, and we clearly share a great respect for the film.

fedex - 2012-03-18

"the LOST patrol'

not last

The Mothership - 2012-03-18

indeed. oops.

sosage - 2012-03-18

I'm a huge fan of the first two films and I am definitely into checking this out, but I am having a very difficult time figuring out why people are going ape shit over this. I mean, I'm sure part of my hang up is just being disappointed in every Alien related thing after 3...and not really digging Ridley Scott post Bladerunner...and being the type of person that thinks fiction is great when it keeps little details a mystery for the audience to imagine about on their own...

It's the space jockey!...okay. So. What? Why? I sense things being shown I will wish unseen when future generations watch Alien.

memedumpster - 2012-03-19

Sosage, 99% of people have utter shit taste in movies. This is just an example of that.

kingarthur - 2012-03-18

You sold me before, sir. No need to sell me again. You may give too much away.

FABIO - 2012-03-18

Best remake disguised as prequel since The Thing (2011)!

I can't wait for the Armageddon meteor shower sequence =(

gmol - 2012-03-18

That looks like a Chozo (I can't say I really know the reference to that alien)...

Then again, wait, was Metroid inspired by Alien? I always thought Ridely was a weird name...

Binro the Heretic - 2012-03-18

In the original "Alien", the crew of a mining ship answers a distress call. They find a craft of non-terrestrial origin with the mummified remains of a large humanoid creature lying in what appears to be a sort of pilot's seat.

Fans nicknamed it "The Space Jockey".

The creature near the end of this trailer appears to be the space jockey prior to its death and mummification.

gmol - 2012-03-18

If I am nuts, I am not the only one:

http://metroid.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_similarities_between_Met roid_and_Alien

StanleyPain - 2012-03-18

I doubt the creature here is the same one in Alien. It appears to be a biosuit or something that encloses around a human-like thing and then merges with the machine. My guess is that this film is sort of about man's first contact with whatever these things are, the ultimate conclusion being that they have the ability to create or manipulate lifeforms to suit their own needs and are generally unpleasant, despite being so advanced. Afterwards, Weyland Yutani is aware of their existence and Prometheus is probably one of a few missions to seek out these things or whatever because Weyland Yutani's leadership are batshit crazy and want access to the technology. So they know there's a crashed derelict and send the Nostromo to check it out assuming they'll be stupid enough to play along not figuring out what they're getting into.

Oh yeah, and yes, the chozo was meant to reference Giger and Alien.

fedex - 2012-03-18

um, that page is empty gmol

if thats your REAL name

CrimsonHyperSloth - 2012-03-18

How long have you been going here and don't remember to take the space out of a URL posted in a comment?

fedex - 2012-03-18

yeah yeah, well it was still a valid site page which was weird (no 404) but you're right

Oktay - 2012-03-18

Based on what StanleyPain said plus one sentence from the other trailer, I think I can guess the big plot point in this. But I won't say anything till Jun 9th.

StanleyPain - 2012-03-18

The promo site and the trailers are, together, giving away a bit too much in my opinion (especially the Corporate Timeline on the website) so it's possible to put together a plausible scenario for the movie and how it fits into the Alien chronology. I won't discuss it here, though.

Oktay - 2012-03-18

Plus there's the possibility of a Riddley Scott curve ball, and all those things might be intentionally misleading.

Oktay - 2012-03-18

Plus I cam't spell.

memedumpster - 2012-03-19

Oh god, the twist is GASP they invented the aliens from Aliens out of human DNA to fight humans but... GASP... something went wrong!

Oktay - 2012-03-19

Those gasps give me hope for the curve ball theory -- too obvious, right? But then again, I had hopes for the SW prequels too. So the lesson is: never hope.

Merzbau - 2012-03-18

Take a look at 1:37 blown up:

urbanelf - 2012-03-18

It's only 1:12 long, jerk.

fedex - 2012-03-18

yes, yes, we are aware of H.R. Giger and his contributions, yesssssss

thankyou, next

Merzbau - 2012-03-18

Ah, sorry, forgot this was the shorter cut. The full thing is here:

Merzbau - 2012-03-18

god dammit cp fail HERE:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHcHYisZFLU

There, that's the full thing

fedex - 2012-03-18

they are similar but definitely have different footage

i.e. :44, a scene which seems to be continued in the longer trailer around 1:40

SolRo - 2012-03-18

I want to have that trailer's alien babies.

SolRo - 2012-03-18

I STILL love you promotheus!

memedumpster - 2012-03-18

Looks like crizzycrap.

Spaceman Africa - 2012-03-18

Exciting!

Riskbreaker - 2012-03-18

The trailer looks interesting, but this won't live up to the expectations.

Gmork - 2012-03-18

The way they make trailers nowadays it's hard to tell whether the movie will be utter crap until youre actually in the theater. That is, if the trailer hasn't alread blown the movie's load already.

fedex - 2012-03-18

well, its somewhat easy to ascertain that at some point, captain black there suicidally crashes the prometheus into the horseshoe ship to stop it from taking off to nuke earth or whatever.

but I still want to see it.

blue vein steel - 2012-03-18

fuck yes

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-03-19

I'm there. Hell, I was there for the shitty Alien vs Predator movie in Antarctica.
