Yeah, I'm not really okay with abusing Kickstarter like that. But Kickstarter is fundamentally flawed and evil anyway.

But yay, Psychonauts, moo moo moo.

CornOnTheCabre - 2012-02-09

I just going to assume by "Psychonauts" you meant "Double Fine Adventure" and by "abusing Kickstarter like that" you meant "using Kickstarter in the exact manner it was intended."

cognitivedissonance - 2012-02-09

The idea of Kickstarter is to give nobodies outside of the usual tracks to production a way to fund their projects. It should not be used by has-beens and the already established to prolong their careers by supplying no-return investors for puff projects.

Obviously there are no "rules" to Kickstarter, and this is just my opinion. I understand it's my opinion and you're free to your own. But the Kickstarter system itself is similarly abusive by taking a chunk out of that money, again, not a problem for the already established but a big problem for the little guys trying to get their first break. But, hey, "Corporate channels are bad, so Kickstarter must be great! This means my niche fascination project doesn't have to adjust itself to a greater cultural narrative, editing and the necessary polish that comes from struggle to make it in a world of gatekeepers is dead!"

Being pro-Kickstarter is very similar to being Chris Chan. If you don't have to prove yourself to anybody, then you can continue scrawling Sonichu forever and still get your monthly tugboat.

Ursa_minor - 2012-02-09

Hahaha, oh lord shut up.

Chalkdust - 2012-02-09

Chris Dodd, is that you?

boggy84 - 2012-02-09

"if people want a thing they will give you money, if they do not want a thing they will not give you money"
not really seeing the equivalence to chris-chan here idiot.

boner - 2012-02-09

How is this in any way "investing"? All you're doing is pre-ordering a video game, not getting a share of the profits.

chumbucket - 2012-02-10

Cool if the "investors" REALLY have input to the making of the game. Great idea but I'm skeptical.

College friend of mine has a game company which got his game http://www.puzzleclubhouse.com/ off the ground with Kstarter but the game itself is fan created anyway. Not so sure this will be.

CornOnTheCabre - 2012-02-10

You're not investing in the game, you're investing in a new distribution model. Less middle-men means cheaper games and more room for risks to be taken by bigger developers.

Gmork - 2012-02-10

I honestly expected everyone to eat cognitive's rant up. +5 because go indie developers! make your weird-ass game!

Ursa_minor - 2012-02-10

G'mork, do you think everyone here is fucking retarded? CD doesn't know what he's talking about.

Chalkdust - 2012-02-11

yeah I do!

oh wait

Vesuvius - 2012-02-09

Hey Craptabulous- this isn't a kickstarter for Psychonauts 2. It's an as of yet unnamed point and click adventure game, and there's concept art related to it on Ron Gilbert's blog. So yeah, your title doesn't make too much sense here.

Yes, there's been talk of him being willing to make Psych 2, but that will cost a lot more and the funding for that is being figured out totally differently.

Still, this kickstarter is awesome in it's own right- they raised 1 million dollars in just about 24 hours. Wooo.

Craptabulous - 2012-02-09

It was late, I was drunk and tired, I wanted to share my excitement for the gaming world. Sorry.

Merzbau - 2012-02-09

This is a separate thing- they're Kickstartering to make an old-school point-and-click adventure game. Psychonauts 2 is what Notch (may) fund.

Still awesome, though.

sosage - 2012-02-09

I like that in this time line Tim Schafer is the main spokesperson for point and click adventure games. You don't want to be in the time line where Roberta Williams is running things.

Jet Bin Fever - 2012-02-09

I heard about this about two hours ago and was so so happy.

Binro the Heretic - 2012-02-09

I am cautiously optimistic.

poorwill - 2012-02-09

I am sick to goddamn death of adventure games but I will flip a few bucks their way.

MrBuddy - 2012-02-10

How do I give five stars for Psychonauts then five more stars for Grim Fandango?

MrBuddy - 2012-02-10

Wow...
"Double Fine uses Kickstarter to fund its next adventure game, passes goal in under 12 hours" http://is.gd/FT7VdS

jreid - 2012-02-10

I wonder how indignant publishers are feeling about this whole situation.

Nominal - 2016-02-17

Joke's on all of you! Broken Age sucked!
