would that this video were released prior to the shooting of bobcat goldthwait's new movie

nonplusplus - 2012-01-30

Nicki Minaj is awesome and this song is catchy as hell.

spikestoyiu - 2012-01-30

I also love Nicki, but I (sadly) hate this.

fedex - 2012-01-30

oh man, u serious? she's like a weak, sad shadow of Lady without the class, brains or vocabulary

LADY HOLLABACK

fedex - 2012-01-30

http://www.73q.com/video.php?vid=93486

themilkshark - 2012-01-30

There's a reason "Lady" isn't played on the radio and Nicki is.

fedex - 2012-01-30

yep, sad but true

spikestoyiu - 2012-01-30

I've never heard Lady. So I listened to "Twerk" and I don't really see the similarity. I did see plenty of butts, though.

sosage - 2012-01-30

I wish I could emphasize strongly enough how her songs are the worst things I've heard on the radio. The radio, mind you, which all sounds like shit now days anyways. It's like how people have worn out the word awesome, when you really do mean the classic definition of awesome. Except it's the phrase "worst thing I've heard on the radio".

Her lyrics are embarrassingly stupid and the background noise is about as catchy as sticking my ear up against a lawnmower engine. I'm sure there is talent here, but this one needs to go back into the oven and spend a few more years developing.

Five for POETV breaking my sarcasm detector.

kingarthur - 2012-01-30

Soooo, if Nicki Minaj is a weak shadow of Lady Gaga, and Lady Gaga is the plebeian, poor man's Grace Jones, where does that leaves us? Three or four rungs down the evolutionary ladder?

spikestoyiu - 2012-01-30

sosage, have you somehow not heard LMFAO yet?

simon666 - 2012-01-30

Sosage: I think you go wrong when think Minaj takes herself as seriously as you do. See jet bin fever's comment below.

EvilHomer - 2012-01-30

Man, you've got to be an old fart if you think Grace Jones is better than Gaga.

sosage - 2012-01-30

I didn't realize that pulling a Tommy Wiseau was considered a mark of quality. I don't want to live on this planet anymore.

themilkshark - 2012-01-30

Damn Nicki Minaj is what makes you want to go all Dr. Manhattan and move to Mars? It's not all the hatred, bigotry and injustice in the world that sent sosage over the edge guys, no all it took was one female rapper!

sosage - 2012-01-31

It was the hair that broke the camels back. Please don't send your playlist to me when I am gone. Besides not wanting to listen to this crap, the infrastructure on Mars is ancient. We aren't allowed emails with attachments over 500kb.

Sudan no1 - 2012-01-31

Her lyrics suck, but some of her songs are kind of catchy. But I respect her for pissing off dorks and Illuminati conspiracists.

kingarthur - 2012-01-31

Well "A friend once told me, to beware of 33...he said, 'it was not an easy time for me'"

You know, I am not Jesus but I have the same initials and all that.

pineapplejuicer - 2012-02-07

kiss my ass and my anus cause its finally famous

Mike Tyson?! - 2012-01-30

I made it almost a minute in! 5 stars for evil quotient.

EvilHomer - 2012-01-30

Ooo, a BP diss! Classy!

Needs a seizure warning.

American Standard - 2012-01-30

...Really?

dairyqueenlatifah - 2012-01-30

This is one of those songs that's so terrible yet so addictive. It sounds like something of someone aspiring 90s rapper's demo tape. I've been listening to it like crazy the last few days.

The video is rather disturbing though.

MC Scared of Bees - 2012-01-30

The video is amazing. The morph into a leopard, the background dancers, the huge eyes... 1990s CG at its best.

OxygenThief - 2012-01-30

This song seems like it is building up to something but it doesn't really go anywhere.

themilkshark - 2012-01-30

I love love love Nicki Minaj. I'd say she's the Nina Hagen of rap, and the only modern rapper I'll listen to.

pathetique - 2012-02-22

I dig that comparison. Her pop culture aesthetic seems pretty genius to me, but I could see how getting only the Superbass slice of Minaj could be off-putting.

Also, look into the older mixtapes & stuff.

jreid - 2012-01-30

She's like a Missy Elliot reboot.

fedex - 2012-01-30

oh please

dairyqueenlatifah - 2012-01-30

That's a really unfair comparison.

EvilHomer - 2012-01-30

I always thought of her as Lil Kim mixed with a spastic Eve, but that's note entirely fair, either.

themilkshark - 2012-01-30

racist.

StanleyPain - 2012-01-30

people listen to this shit? seriously? and then get into arguments about its merits?

I...uh...

wow

theSnake - 2012-01-30

life is farce

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2012-01-30

I have no idea what this is.. Is it a parody of something? I actually think the music is pretty interesting, it sounds like some new kind of music im not familiar with. The way its arranged is actually really bleak and unforgiving.

Ursa_minor - 2012-01-30

What the fuck is this shit?

spikestoyiu - 2012-01-30

Hype Williams.

duck&cover - 2012-01-30

Booty Wave.

BroodMother - 2012-01-30

I can't believe how many people like this shit. Repetitive, obnoxious, and terrible. Nicki Minaj is oversexualized to the point that it is disgusting.

themilkshark - 2012-01-30

...disgustingly sexy

Sphinx - 2012-01-30

Evil.

I watched some Janelle Monae videos to cleanse myself of this... whatever this is.

Jet Bin Fever - 2012-01-30

Self-parodying is pretty popular in pop music these days.

chumbucket - 2012-01-30

BOOM noise, money.

1394 - 2012-01-30

Trying too hard

themilkshark - 2012-01-30

yeah she should phone it in more, that would sound better

Boxhead - 2012-01-30

Man, I can barely hear the music over the sound of all the monocles popping out in the replies.

Oktay - 2012-01-30

That repetitive popping sound is part of the track, if I'm not mistaken.

pathetique - 2012-02-22

If I hadn't already rated I would give my stars to you.

The Mothership - 2015-07-16

Stars for everybody right here.

oswaldtheluckyrabbit - 2012-01-30

I like this. It's not genius or anything, but the beat is really aggressive and ridiculous.

CornOnTheCabre - 2012-01-31

i like to parse this particular discussion thread as a multiple choice question, with this comment being the correct answer

CJH - 2012-01-30

i want everyone who is disgusted or perplexed by nicki, all of you in the comments, please gather round.

you knew it was coming. you didn't like to think about it, but you knew it was inevitable. you even saw the signs! bizarre flashes of aggression upon the sight of children at play. a mounting bewilderment with the strange new fashions you see. it's just....

...you're old now. officially. i'm so sorry guys.

Pope Caius - 2012-01-30

Does this mean I can wear a fedora without looking like a tool now?

sosage - 2012-01-30

You too will grow up...and when that happens, we will point out how you thought Nicki Minaj was brilliant...and you will try to play it off as an embarrassing fad of your generation or that it was a weird phase everyone was into at the time. How you were really into Odd Future instead. You'll try to deny ever writing this comment, but we'll dust if off and point at it with fake discovery saying, "oh! What's this? Is that a comment YOU made?" It will be the Internet version of discovering a Poison t-shirt under someone's bed in 2003 or a cassette tape of Another Bad Creation in 2007.

It will be delicious, all because you called us old.

themilkshark - 2012-01-30

I would KILL for Another Bad Creation on a t-shirt.

Damn sosage that comment makes you sound so old.

spikestoyiu - 2012-01-30

If you can't listen to "Playground" and still enjoy it, well then I just feel terrible for you.

pathetique - 2012-02-22

I'm sorry guys, I'm inclined to agree. This is a music video, with costumes, and performance, and it's not all that much different than anything else.

A lot of the color themes/tropes that have been popping up recently is seemingly everyone making music videos for ladies being obsessed with David LaChappelle: http://www.pbase.com/omoses/david_lachapelle
Most notably Rihanna's S&M video, which actually resulted in a copyright lawsuit.

ALSO: http://grooveshark.com/#!/album/Playtime+Is+Over/4450876

pathetique - 2012-02-22

TL;DR: Nicki Minaj is a legit lady who has been around for a long time, and in her rise to fame she is going through pop star motions, which are not artistically negligible.

Gmork - 2012-01-31

Still formulating my opinion about her. Stupid music with quasi-intelligent lyrics, a bangin' booty, but all those manic facial expressions are confusing my boner. Who blinks that much?

CornOnTheCabre - 2012-02-01

pretty much anyone in a Hype Williams video?

TheSupafly - 2012-02-21

I cannot tell if this is ironic or not, perhaps that is the genius? Too purposely annoying either way. The girl has some flow but her fucking accompanied music is wretched.

Riskbreaker - 2013-01-30

This woman looks like an aborted Tila Tequila mixed with crayons. The video is seizure inducing and the "music" sounds like something you would hear in a slaughterhouse. I'm glad i'm old, grumpy and that an artist like Grace Jones exists. Nobody is going to remember this shit.

That guy - 2016-01-30

You were supposed to say that same comment, but give it 5.

Ranma X. - 2013-01-30

She's still doing the "Harajuku Barbie" thing, which makes me smile like an idiot.

That said, three and a half minutes of Hype Williams is enough for me. The visuals are cool, the cutting is not, though The one sequence near the end with the eyes almost pulls a Takashi Murakami-like "cuteness as grotesque" aesthetic.

BorrowedSolution - 2014-01-30

Fucking thing sucks!

That guy - 2016-01-30
