This guy is fascinating and I'm going to go pick up some of his books. If nothing else, I like his beefcake photos.

My old Sociology Prof had us spend about three weeks focus on him. The photos are tied to a personal fascination with St. Sebastian. He sort of became obsessed with the idea of obsession itself, which is pervasive in Temple of the Golden Pavilion, which is unfortunately the only book by he himself that I've read.

He had the kinda life most folks with artistic ambitions dream of, yet he was probably not that happy with it himself, as is typical, I suppose. It said that the sepuku at the Imperial Palace was not for any real political statement or ideology, but simply because he believed it was a fitting way to go, indeed something he needed to do to remain relevant in his own mind. Suicide for suicides sake. Obsession. Damned interesting man.

The man certainly led a full life.

I've read a few of his short stories, they were very sad, involved unrequited love, alienation, and death.

Paul Schrader's movie about him is one of the best bio pics ever made about anyone. The contradictions in Mishima's life were explored very well.

Agreed. Schrader's commentary is wonderful on the DVD. He called it the emotional sequel to Taxi Driver.

I've read a few of his novels (Temple of the Golden Pavilion, Runaway Horses, Kyoko's House) and I can definitely say they were pretty good, but of course I always felt that reading them translated (even though Mishima approved of the translations) was maybe shorting myself.
I read them in high school, during which time I was in a class that had two Japanese exchange students. Neither of them had even heard of Mishima (so they claimed). His books are weird in that they are mostly character studies of people just as fucked up as Mishima was, but apparently he liked being wrapped up in how fucked up he was.
And, yeah, the Paul Schrader film is amazing. Criterion put out a DVD of it in the last few years that has some nice extra features and great video quality.

I was half expecting a Japanese version of L. Ron Hubbard based on the description...until I watched the first 90 seconds. Great bio.

I'm shocked you got 90 seconds into it, the site its on is damned near unusable.
