According to the CIA World Factbook, the US consumes 19,150,000 barrels of oil per day, so 1 billion barrels would last us 52 days. This guy has been fighting for 39 years to drill in pristine nature for less than a 2 month supply of oil.

I've never heard of shale oil or the Green River shale deposits. Interesting stuff. Wikipedia states "The Green River Formation contains the largest oil shale deposits in the world. The 213 billion tons of oil shale contain an estimated 2.38 × 10¹¹ m³ (1.5 trillion US barrels) of shale oil."

If the barrels-per-day rate stayed the same, that is enough oil to last us 215 years.

It's wishful thinking that we could extract all of Bakken, Green River, and the lesser researched Devonian shales of Mississippi. What angers me from both the environmentalist side and the drill-baby-drill idiots is that neither of them take into account JUST WHAT IT WOULD TAKE to get this oil in full swing, and also what kinds of benefits it would grant the country to be producing 5m barrels of oil (or even more) a day.

My main objective is that we dump the 19th century system of plunder and legal wrangling over mineral rights and incorporate the shale deposits into a national trust. Such a trust is what allows Norway to transition a lot of their infrastructure to greener, sustainable output, why they consistently have under 5% unemployment, and why they don't have to get mixed up in foreign affairs to secure energy sources.

It's worth reading the Rand Corporation's analysis of shale oil extraction. It's pretty objective. The main problem isn't the regulations, it's the infrastructural and logistical problems of getting it. Who is going to pay for the hundreds of billions of barrels of fresh water we need to get this stuff? Where is it coming from? At this point, it's just easier to build a smart grid.
